One of the most underappreciated players to play for United. Everyone thought he was finished a few years ago but look at him now, starting left back for club and country at the age of 33. Unbelievable story.

Also the most underappreciated player to be playing for England at the moment.

Find it a bit maddening that people want Rose to come in ahead of him even now.

came as a winger for a good value, after promising few performances, didn't make it. Transitionioned into a squad player who never moans and gives his everything only to reestabilsh himself as one of the best LB in the league. If you don't value his performances on the pitch which would be a mistake because he made a lot for this club on the pitch, you have to love his character. He loves to play for our club, works hard never gets unsettled. Great character for the dressing room.

We all know that we need to find the replacement but only because he's just turned 33, if he was younger I would take him as my LB for sure. So give us a season or two of some joy Ashley, and Happy Birthday! (think the bird poo changed a lot of things)

He's done a very competent job for club and country when not so long ago he looked utterly finished for both. He's taken (deserved) flak for going down easily while others who are as bad if not worse seem to get away with it but he's by all accounts a model pro who is a case study of what hard work can do for you.

Happy Birthday Smashley.

Elite mentality.
Career at the top level looked dead two years ago.

To be honest, he eplays better now as a LWB or LB than as a winger most of the time. He wasnt great under Fergie, but useful. Under Moyes and Van Gaal he was horrendous. Picked up under Jose, looks better than ever currently. Wanted him gone years ago, first player on the list

Great career comeback. Has shown those who wanted him out of the door (including myself I admit) that he was prepared to knuckle down and put in the hard work.

I chuckle when I see player raters on BBC site and he is getting around 5.5/10 each game.

The way Hoddle kept dismissing him vs Sweden rubbed me up the wrong way as well. "Young is getting a lot of the ball but Trippier is the real threat. He delivers a great ball." This after Young's assist and a few other brilliant cross he put in. I believe it was also Hoddle who mentioned Young's lack of a left foot. Very few fullbacks can cross as well as he with their weaker foot.

I think he was quite good under Van Gaal in all honesty. That was when he first started playing as a left wingback since Shaw wasn't quite ready and we were playing with a back 3. He stood out as a player who improved during LVG's first season at the club.

Happy Birthday! Imagine celebrating your birthday today and then in a couple of days playing (& hopefully winning!) a World Cup Semi-Final.

He was an integral part of the much heralded '3 game run' in 14/15, that left side triumvirate of Blind, Fellaini and Young. Somehow that tore City, Liverpool and Spurs a new one. A rather amusing milestone for the club, but that did seem to be the point where he started to give his career a bit of revitalising.

He's been a solid dependable full back option in the last 2 or 3 years, keeping actual full backs out of the side. Credit to him.

And this time next week, he'll be a World Champion. Fancy that.

Tbh, if he were Brazilian, he would be getting praised like Dani Alves or whoever for his longevity as a full-back.

He also played as a striker, can't remember it it was under Jose or LvG.

Happy Birthday, one of the most positive things from last season.
It was LvG.

He had Young and Di Maria in a 352 upfront at one point I’m pretty sure. Nutty bastard.

TBH, I think that an uninjured Danny Rose is a better left back than Ashley and that's probably why people feel this way.

But Ashley is the man in possession due to Rose's former injury and Southgate is being pragmatic in playing a settled team.

I agree with everyone who says what a good player he's been for Utd, total model pro.

Happy Birthday :-)

Looking for the answers...
Happy Birthday.

Couldn't be happier to see him playing so well for club and country in what is essentially the twilight of his career.

An elite mentality that has pushed him on passed when many had written him off. It has been fantastic to see, and I hope he feels vindicated in putting in the hard work. Getting back into the starting XI for United and England must mean the world to him.

A certain young English left back in our squad should certainly be looking at him and wanting to put in the graft...

Aye, it was annoying me as well. Young's delivery was every bit as good as Trippier's against Sweden ... and his delivery this entire tournament (especially from set pieces) has been first rate... so no idea where the criticism is coming from.

People are getting hung up on this "he checks back on his right too much" guff, as if that's some sort of meaningful criticism.... and I just think so feckin' what? As long as he delivers a good ball he can check back onto his arse for all I care.

Unlike the guy whose place he's taken in the England and Manchester United team Ashley always looks to me as though he could do with a good meal, or three, so credit to him for excelling in a position new to him(and at the highest level) where strength is a key requirement.

Young played as a striker in second half against Spurs when we lost 3-0. Our formation was something like that IIRC :

Rashford - Lingard- Martial
Young

Mind blowing.

Has there been a less likely fairytale story than Ashley Young reinventing himself as a starter for club and country? Let alone a popular player with the fans. God he was so hated a few years back. Well pleased for him. Could be here for a few years yet. He's proved he'll do part time duty and doesnt mind waiting for his opportunity. Could be a squad player for years.

Young is so underappreciated, he got called out on Eastenders. One of the bar staff randomly said "I'd play Danny Rose for his natural width on the left." feck off!

Pretty sure he came on as a striker in the Fa Cup final only to be switched back to LB after Smallings red card as well.

We ended that game with the lineup of

Valencia Darmian Blind Young
Rooney Carrick Fellaini
Lingard Martial

Basically LVGs reign in a nutshell.

Happy birthday (sir) Ashley Young!! Hoping for good health and have a blast a world cup.

A wonderful servant for United, couldn't be more grateful to have a professional like you in the club.

Solid at LWB. I don't understand why people are insisting we replace him with a host of 50m rated PL-unproven imports when we can address that in 2 years when Ashley is probably done.

Credit to his work ethic, commitment and desire. Many questioned Mourinho's decision to start him week in week out - not so much now.
