How on earth was that an overhit pass!? Any elite forward would cherish that chance. When I was watching the game, I immediately imagined if Ronaldo was there (alright he's an anomaly but insert any elite forward there).
It's called physics mate. You'll learn about it when you get to big school.

Lukaku made the run and KDB tried to pick him out. He over hit the pass and Lukaku couldn't quite get there.
This isn't a ball played across from the byline, Lukakus run makes the chance.
You can't blame him for not knowing KDB will over hit it. What if KDB plays it perfectly and it goes behind him?
Still his fault?
I think you need to see the replay. Lukaku was slow to react, checked his run bit and couldn't decide what to do.

It wasn't that over hit as such. Maybe for him to take it down on the chest but not for him to run quickly at it to throw his head on it.

If Rvp reacts like Lukaku there even this is over hit and in fact this was a much tougher situation than Lukaku. But Rvp is clear on what he is gonna do and just throws himself.

It was an over hit pass. He's not Superman ffs
It wasnt overhit. The ball travelled a long way and he had time to get on the end of it. It just waant anticipated/judged well by Lukaku

Lukaku doesn't change pace, he has to time the run or he's offside.
If he slowed down or something I could see why but he doesn't. KDB has the ball at his feet and he has to pick out the run.
He couldn't. Its a great attempt all the same but its not Lukakaus fault.

It was like Blind's pass to RVP vs Spain where RVP did a diving header.

I'm not disregarding him because he can't do a diving header - however he doesn't have fluidity to his movement that you see in strikers like RVP, Suarez etc etc that allows them to even attempt that - to hit consecutive volleys from close and from far, to score headers that not just bounce of your head but actually rely you to run on to the end of it - ultimately it's no difference to his first touch; that comes from his lack of fluidity in his movement rather than an actual inability to control the ball.

He has too many rough edges to his game which are both a benefit & a hindrance.

Either some posters here are just pure haters, or they don't understand football. France did well to win the midfield battle. It's their credit. Luiz Suarez is your mobile forward yet he couldn't do shite about disorganize France defense on his own, and France again boss the midfield. Why would it be Lukaku the problem? It's like people look at this and think Belgium was playing at their best like first half vs Brazil for example and Lukaku is the ugly duck failing his job.

Really not suited to these types of games. Invisible and just didnt know how to get involved. The key thing for him in games like this is to keep moving and stay focused and not let his head drop, but think he was too flat footed on a few occasions and the chances went begging because of that.

Overall had a pretty good tournament still, but he only scored against Panama and Tunisia, then was pretty meh against Japan IMO, very good in the first half vs Brazil, and then anonymous tonight. Hopefully he can grab a goal in the 3rd place game and end the tournament on a high, otherwise it wont be much more then a pretty average tournament for him.
Think the same. Also, his heading for a big guy is really poor, that's one thing that disappointed me the most from him in this World Cup.

Nobody is saying Lukaku was the problem but he wasn't the solution either.

His weaknesses really come to the fore in games like this.

Saw this quote from Keown. Disgraceful for a pundit to single out a player like this.

'It never lived up to the billing. We thought there was going to be extra time tonight. All credit to France they were remarkably professional.

Lukaku just has not got what it takes to play in a World Cup final. France looked a class apart.'

Poor comments. He was fantastic against Brazil and there were equally or less effective players than Lukaku who's game is mostly based on service which was poor today. Giroud - who's yet to register a shot on goal in the best team in the world is good enough though? :houllier:

Keown is a fecking idiot so take what he says with the smallest grain of salt.

If Lukaku was in France's team instead of Giroud I can assure you he would be much much better.

Really. Try to read the last couple pages then come back.

So what kind of weakness? Doesn't play midfield to man mark Pogba, so Martinez can play somebody else up instead of Fellaini?

Leading up to this game Lukaku had a fair claim for POTY; against Brazil he was just awesome. Against France I thought he didn't get enough supply as France were very organized. At the end of the day the game was decided by a fortunate headed goal by France so I wouldn't blame him.

That's the type of comment made by someone who was waiting all tournament to say it but wasn't able to because Lukaku had been too good. Ridiculous.

Lukaku didn't have a good game but no one aside from Hazard and Courtois did. Did little with little ultimately, unfortunately for Belgium. Still think he as a top player of the tournament.

Yeah. Hes really bad when you try to use him as a target man. His timing on the headers for high balls has always been pretty horrible too, was constantly annoying last season. What he needs is to be a poacher essentially, run in behind, have space to get on the ball and build up steam to run with it, and then the instinctive finishes. Constant high balls, requiring the hold up play, playing with his back to goal is pretty much how you nullify him.

Didn't take long for the vultures to start circling. No one mentions he's playing against two of the best CB's in the world and was at times completely isolated with limited chances at best.

Yeah, he's been one of the 5-6 best players at the Cup. Actually felt gutted for him today. Good thing for him he doesn't give a shite what clowns like Keown say about him and he'll go from strength to strength.

I still think he needs to learn to make different runs inside the box and not be static. If you look at Cristiano, he's so hard to stop he is always changing, coming near post and far post

He’s very static when played as no. 9 there’s no doubt, he doesn’t drag around CBs well enough, too easy to take him out of the game when there’s no space to operate in.
I would like us to try this against parked buses:
Martial Sanchez Lukaku
Sanchez can drift out right while Lukaku makes runs towards the centre. Martial far left to keep width. Then Pogba and Fred can try to thread passes in the spaces that appear.

That would take a lot of energy out of him. He's a much bigger and heavier man than Ronaldo.

Broken records in the prem and leading all time goal scorer for Belgium being a statue....some of the comments on here and simply ridiculous.

I remember one of the posters making it a good point (which I agree with) saying he should really look into dropping some weight as those constant runs in the box require a lot of energy as he always stops after the first attempt and becomes static, basically switches off and reaction time slows down too due to those little sprints taking a huge tool him. He would obviously lose out in some aspects but can gain significantly more by taking this route IMO.

At other clubs (West Brom, Everton) he had acres of spaces in front of him and in most instances needed to make one run to get away from his marker but he doesn't have the same luxury with us, hence his lower output while playing for a much better team. It's a very valid point if you actually bother watching strikers play.

Please tell how throughout his career has he managed to score some many goals everywhere he's gone including internationally.....?

He's so good at certain things but not good at others. That's it for me basically. It's how you utilise him which is the key. Against technically astute, physically imposing defenders he is simply not that much of a threat.
However I also feel, especially watching this Belgium side, that his teammates are relcuntcant to pass to him in right spaces.

Above what? If that's the case why are other forwards not achieved what he has if it's just down to playing at Everton and West Brom.
Because his qualities suit to different tactics, not a rocket science is it. He still may improve, which I hope he does but just honestly can't see it being enough for us if we're aiming at top top honours. He's a very good striker just can't see him being a league winning one, which is why I come across as overly harsh on him.

I'm not sure if it's possible. He has a stocky and wide frame. He's like Rooney but with an extra 15cm (two and a half inches) height. He'll never be lean like Ronaldo. Or a Chicharito, who will make 10 different runs in one minute to confuse differents. Hence he probably focuses on strength and pace for ball-shielding and chasing the ball down channels or taking the defenders on.

He's got his strengths and he's got his weaknesses like all players. Some games he'll be unplayable (like last game) and some games he'll be anonymous and most games he'll be good... depending on the opponents he's facing and how well he's supplied by the midfield.

I like him, he's a top striker as the stats show. But he'll never be a GOAT candidate (for striker category) like R9, Pele, Romario or CR7 etc. I do feel he will eclipse Rooney's records in the EPL though which will be some achievement itself if it comes to pass.
