maybe you should have read what I said, Griezmann would be on half numbers in England too playing the position and minutes Lingard plays, one is a main attacking point of one team in Spanish league, second is player who works hard for his team and sacrifice his creativity. Lingard is two years younger as well, will probably never get as much freedom, including taking set pieces and penalties being at the end of all attacks. Just imagine players didn't have names faces just a pure sum of their abilities, switch the both players and you will not see a big difference. Secondary striker is the easiest position to play on the pitch. YOu just wonder around make the runs and get easy goals if your team works well. I can see a lot of player thriving in that role, who in other more disciplined roles failed to breakthrough like Depay, Zaha, T. Mueller, play Young there he will score 15-20 goals there too

but that's just my opinion
Griezmann showed his quality at Real Sociedad as well. 40 league goals in 4 seasons in a mid-table side. Two bottom half finishes, highest of 4th. When he played for France in WC 2014, it was off the back of his performances for Sociedad.

Lingard is a late bloomer and hopefully has a few more notches to go. His movement is tremendous, his energy to the team as well. Even under Van Gaal the best football Utd played tended to have him in the team because he's the type of player who makes little give-and-go's to up the tempo and keep the ball circulating.

The staggering overrating of Lingard by some on here, isn't doing him any good, it just makes the bed for the guaranteed bashing once he has a bad game. He is having a solid World Cup, let's hope he can continue that against Croatia.
I don't think that's the case. He can only be overrated in relation to his age. In other words, his age mates are Christian Eriksen, Sadio Mane, Isco and Coutinho. So if somebody were to say Jesse Lingard is world class or something along those lines then you can play the overrated card because those players have been at a high level for multiple seasons now but not universally seen as world class, whereas Jesse is still only coming into that level of consistency. It's for that reason I am not going to call him better than Dele Alli since Alli turned 22 towards the end of last season, and had more consistency. Even in his "poor" last season still pulled up double digits for goals and assists. But I don't see anyone saying Jesse is world class. Considering how much criticism he has taken on here in the last few years people are taking pride that at how he has come on and surpassing expectations.

I'm just enjoying the positivity in this thread right now, because you know the next time he has a bad streak the "Lingard is a championship / league one player" narrative is coming back.

Have to say, I never considered the lad remotely good enough for Utd, he's proving me more and more wrong (almost) every game. Hopefully he can keep this up and be more consistent, he needs to be regularly giving 7 or 8 out of 10 performances now.

It’s the same both ways buddy. I’m not a Lingard fan but long may his form continue as I’ll be delighted. But as soon as he’s shite again folk will state it and soon as he plays well folk will state it.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Jesse but watching this lad in this England side has made me appreciate him more. He makes selfless runs for the team, he uses the ball well. This lad could find space in a single bed with Gemma Collins.

Some decent touches but overall a poor half, missing an easy square ball when Croatia were on the back foot and had a great chance with loads of time and didn’t even hit the target or get any power behind the shot.

Put it on a plate for Kane. Far from a poor half.

Yes as I said he had some good touches and did play a short ball into Kane (who should have squared to Stirling) but as the commentators have just said his shooting chance he should have done a lot better with and for me the opportunity to square it 5-10 yards and we would have been through are what typifies his inconsistent game.

Still wasn’t a poor half.

He runs around a lot and makes good runs but he just lacks so much quality on the ball. All tournament long he's had the chance to play passes or finish and he's fluffed it up every single time.

If we line up with him at the start of the season and Young at LB then I give up on the title challenge.

Been poor the last two games. Carrying him and Alli cost England in the second half as Croatia dominated the midfield.

I do hope we are addressing this lads position.

yep he’s inconsistent and as much as I’d love England to win a World Cup, I’m much more concerned about united. I do hope we replace him as a first team option.

Feel as though of the 4 attacking players he deserves the most credit from this tournament, his quality might not be up there but he's still outperformed supposed better players imo

We've struggled to create chances all tournament because we've relied on Alli Lingard and Sterling to create chances and none of them did it consistently.

He was bright in the first half because he had players buzzing around him and the team was clicking. Lingard is the type of forward who knits play together with quick passes, give and go's and neat footwork. As I say in the first half that was happening well.

In the second and thereafter when the game opened up his weak areas came more prominent. The England forward players were just too far away - Kane in central midfield, Alli occupied defensively on the left flank, Sterling up top but outnumbered. Lingard is a facilitator but there was nothing to work with after half time.

Really!? This is like the idea that he had a good season when he actually had one good month and in World Cup terms, a good game against Panama.
I think he he's had a decent tournament. Not great all the time but has had periods of playing well like most of the team.
