Good first half, very poor since second half.
Pretty much. Though England played the first half with a crazy intensity. They were never going to keep that up for 90 mins. I suspect they were looking to try and expose Croatia’s expected fatigue.

Does the myth that he is great in big games still live on?
At some point I think yes as the trophies he helped won will be forever in United's cabinet as an actual historical proof.

He'll probably go down as an underdog but no one should take away his moments of glory from him... and he's 25 by the way so plenty of things before him.

I think he he's had a decent tournament. Not great all the time but has had periods of playing well like most of the team.
Fair enough. Personally I think he’s been pretty dross in most games and today let balls come into the box far too often. I guess he’s picked by managers for his work rate but he kept letting balls come into the box from the man he should be marking.

Just don’t rate him and hope we replace him in the transfer market.

I've been a huge critic of Lingard over the years (just check the threads) and thought he was poor today, but I think he just didn't have the legs and was tired. He has played alot of football over the last year and with his style of constant running, was always going to burn out eventually.

One thing I will say is that he does need to improve his consistency. This playing well for one game and then bad for 2-3 after needs to improve.

I'm not his biggest fan either. Think a team that has hopes of winning the league and CL has to have better attackers than him. But performances are relative. Think he's played well given his ability and what he's shown inhis career. It would be silly to expect him to play like one of the top attackers.

Yes and that’s fine for a player coming off the bench for united (if he was young) but as first team regular it’s far from acceptable.

Never going to be quite good enough with the ball for the very top level unfortunately. Solid player with great movement but I hope Mourinho isn’t planning on having him as a starter this year. Squad option yes.

Don't think Mourinho has an option unless he changes formation. The market for RW looks poor right now.

He's improved this past season and had a good WC, but I don't think you win much if he's starting game in and game out.

Should be used in specific games and is best as a squad option imo.

If anyone thinks he’s good enough to start for us on a regular basis. Please stop typing. Cheers.

Crappy game from him, was quite nonexistent during the whole contest tonight. Lingard is a second striker, not a creative attacking midfielder.

The problem with Lingard is how bad he is when things aren't going well. Like ridiculously bad.

I somewhat agree that he surely can't be a starter week in week out. Use him in certain games, but we can't enter the season depending on him as our sole number 10.

For England?? It is not like they have buckets of quality players rotting on the bench
England didnt win... at United there are better options to start in midfield and if a club like United doesnt have better option those better options should be found on the transfer market.

He's improved a lot, is a valuable squad player for us and has done pretty well for England. He seems a popular personality in the squad and although the dance routines, social media, handshakes etc annoy me as an old fart, he comes across as a pretty likeable lad.

But it seems obvious to me that he'd get nowhere near the first team of the likes of Madrid, Barca, PSG, Man City etc. I don't want to be too harsh but ultimately if we want to compete with the best, he's the type of player we need to upgrade. I don't mind him as a squad player but he shouldn't be anything more.

That pass to Kane was class and he had a good chance himself. If Kane scores and/or he scores, he would have a great game. Him and Sterling were bad in the second half.

what I absolutely hate about forums like this is when the result goes the other way. regardless how he would have played if it was 2:1 for england it would have been considered a good performance and if in the same tight game he croatia would win like tonight he's crap again. football fans

It feels like watching movie where a guy just saved a planet from destruction; then at the end of movie, he killed and ate the puppy.

I thought he had a good World Cup, not amazing, but a similar performance level to most of the England first choice eleven. The number of players, of any nation, who were vastly superior to Lingard was very small.

If he is performing well, then I don't have the slightest problem with him being a starter for United.

I never get the point of such inane claims. The likes of Vasquez have been regular first team squaders at Real. Pedro and Sandro at Barca. Even Deulofeu got games for them. Muller is literally a Bayern legend yet Lingard is technically superior. Gnabry will be a regular for them this coming seaon as will a Rebic if they do sign him. Lingard in reality would get regular game in many of the current top teams.

He isn't good enough to start for a team aiming to win the big prizes.

The best teams have much better attacking midfielders than Lingard. Even Spurs have better in Eriksen. We can, and should, do much better than him.
Basically this. I'm fine with him as a bench option, but no more. He isn't part of the elite or something close to that.

Nah I disagree, he's been directly involved in winning everything we have since Fergie, meanwhile Eriksens trophy cabinet is gathering dust.
