Welcome to Manchester reception committee
Time for a change of season.

La Liga is expected to start on the weekend of 18/19 August and finish mid May. No fixtures list yet, they're expected to come out in a couple of weeks time (23rd July according to some sites).

Just as a reminder, at the end of 2017/18:
The top: Barcelona (93), Atletico Madrid (79), Real Madrid (76), Valencia (73)
Europa League places: Villarreal, Real Betis ("Long live Betis even when they lose"), Sevilla
Relegated: Deportivo, Las Palmas, Malaga

Promoted from Liga2 for 2018/19: Huesca, Rayo Vallecano, Real Valladolid

It's Huesca's first time in Liga1, in fact they didn't even get into Liga2 until 10 years ago (though a previous version of the town's club got to Liga2 in the 50s). They're from Aragon - Spain/France border region. The stadium holds 5500. In a league of whales and minnows, these guys are tiddlers. That said, they were in the Liga2 playoffs in 2016/17, losing out to Getafe, so last season wasn't really a freak result.

With Zidane and Ronaldo leaving, Real Madrid in transition and Messi / Barcelona in decline wondering if Atletico with Antoine "The Decision" Griezmann staying are title favourites?

Will be very interesting.

Also I think it's on Eleven sports in the UK instead of Sky? How will that work?

I'll be watching online anyway. Best European league by a distance.

Barcelona are in decline.

Messi's decline isn't as extreme. They won the league last season because of him.

They're the favorites.

Barcelona will be going all in for the Champions League after what happened in the past 3 years, I can see them lacking the motivation and consistency to win the league. Madrid are the opposite but they're a complete question mark right now. I think in theory it will be a great chance for Atleti to put up another title challenge and with the Champions League final in their own stadium I can see them getting there too.

Madrid and Barça are the favourites, Atlético have an outsiders chance. Credit to them though, they have managed to keep the core of players and even brought in a high profile player with Lemar. Rodri is said to be a huge talent too, so promising squad.

As it stands: Oblak - Vrsaljko, Godin, Gimenez (Savic), Filipe Luis - Thomas/Rodri, Saul - Lemar, Koke - Griezmann, Costa. Easily a top 10 team in Europe with Cholo on the bench.

I honestly wonder what will happen with Atleti when Simeone leaves (wich i think will be in season or 2 max period of time).. They must be well prepared with who to replace him and how to handle the transition after otherwise they risk to go back to mediocrity...

Don't think they are depending that much on Cholo. The squad is looking strong so I'd expect them to at least be a CL regular without him too.

The more astonishing thing though is that they have been managed by Simeone for seven straight years now and no sign of fatigue from either the coach or the team. Really exceptional in times where coaches rarely stay more than three consecutive seasons and Cholo seems to be a very demanding coach.

I really like them, they are debt free and Huesca is one of the few small teams in Spain that own their stadium.
They lost the manager who got them promoted. Think he joined Espanyol.

Leo Franco (ex Argentina keeper) is in charge, first managerial job. Their stadium is only 5k I think which is probably smallest in La Liga for many a year.

I think Atletico will win the league next season. Loving the look of the starting XI and depth of their squad.
Oblak

Vrsaljko-Godin-Gimenez-Felipe Luis

Correa-Koke-Saul-Lemar

Griezmann-Costa

That looks so good. Juanfran, Lucas Hernandez and Savic as defensive cover, Partey and Rodri for midfield, Vitolo and Gameiro as attacking options. Winning the league would be very complicated but with the CL final being at their own stadium I think they might just finally pull it off.

Griezmann staying must've shocked them a little. They surely signed Costa in January with expectations he'd leave as that's what Atletico do.

Having the two of them upfront is certainly a formidable option.

Last season they were slow starters at their new ground which gave Barca chance to build an big points buffer over both Madrid clubs. Next season will be much more level.

lots of things changing with Machin in Sevilla. As expected he sticks to his 3421 system and used it in the first friendly. Additionally, the squad is going to change a lot.

GK: Soria just got sold to Getafe and a new #1 was purchased (Vaclik). I don't know if Sergio Rico stays; he might leave when anyone makes a proper offer. Sergio Rico stagnated for quite some time. Personally I think he needs to move somewhere else if he wants to progress. Soria is quite average. I don't know much about Vaclik, but everything I heard about him, makes me quite optimistic.

CBs: Lenglet is joining Barca and Pareja is also on his way out. Kjaer, Mercado, Carrico (very injury prone) for three positions is not enough. Maybe Amadou, who just joined from Lille might also play as CB. He did so in the first friendly; still I think he is primarily a DM. Sevilla tried to sign Caleta-Car from Salzburg, but apparently many clubs try that. It would be a very good transfer. At two new CBs are needed. Djene (Getafe) might join the team next week. Hopefully at least one of them is a nailed on starter.

Fullbacks: the only position, where we are settled with Escudero+Arana and Navas+Corchia.

Midfield: It depends a lot of who stays/leaves. NZonzi and Banega are both linked with foreign clubs. Losing one of those two would be a big blow. Currently we have N'Zonzi, Banega, Roque Mesa and Amadou for two positions. I hope they look for another creative midfielder; Banega can't play all games. Guido Pizarro went back to Mexico, which is fine; he started well, but struggled afterwards.

Attack: Machin&Girona played with a target man & two AMs. It remains to be seen if he sticks to this formula or if he changes it. We don't have a target man; Bas Dost was linked to the club, but I havn't heard anything about this recently.
Currently we have: Ben Yedder, Muriel, Nolito, Correa, Vazquez, Ganso and Sarabia.

Of all those players, I only rate Sarabia. Ben Yedder knows how to score goals, but overall he is very poor and I doubt that he fits into the new system. Muriel is *frustrating* to say the least. He makes Welbeck look like a clinical finisher. That said he might be useful playing of a physical target man. Regardless, I don't see him leaving after just one season considering his price tag. Hopefully he turns it around. Nolito looked finished. I hope he leaves, but I doubt it. Correa is one of those players, who will end up as 28-year-old *talent*. Machin doesn't seem to fancy Vazquez and West Ham might be interested in him. Getting a decent fee from an English club for him would be the best thing ever. Hopefully the club is able to unearth some hidden gems. The team lacks quality. Maxi Gomez would be one of my favorite (realistic) transfer targets.

Don't worry. Machín can work wonders with a team. He can drill a team pretty well.

Wouldn't shock me if he signed Stuani. Got an amazing season out of him at Girona, probably won't cost much and guy is effective targetman you seem to lack.

La Liga looks a bit weak this season, without CR7 and quite an aged Messi and Suarez. Maybe it's gonna Atletico year again?

Atletico made some great signings, and they are on the verge to make some more. If Simeone stops putting on his victim coat, then they are definetly favourites for the title.

Valencia are celebrating 100 years and are aiming to have a good season. Real Madrid will be bery interesting, since they'll begin a whole new era. A Barcelona side post Iniesta will be interesting as well.

Sevilla on the other hand... Things just looks bleek, despite Machin as coach.

I don't know about Simeone, he tried to put the big boy shoes back in 2015, that first season with Griezmann, Mandzu, peak Koke, Arda, signed Cerci... it looked like he wanted Atletico to be the ones in charge of matches and it backfired terribly. Had to return back to underdog tactics to improve their results.

That experiment in 2015 still makes me think today that he isn't capable of getting results without the 1-0 grinding two times per week, swapping Gabi for Rodri could help them be more creative in midfield, but I fear the lack of Gabi or any other reference DM is only going to make all their players work harder in defense. Maybe more moments of individual brilliance, but an overall increase in the grind mentality of all the squad.

Messi's only just turned 31 chaps. People in here talking as if he's Benjamin Button. Atletico should be a real tough outfit this season. Winning something last season should reinvigorate them for more trophies. And Barca can't keep winning the Copa every season. Madrid are a complete mystery at this point, they might go on and actually be super strong all season, or they might collapse, or any point in between. I remain....reasonably confident that Barca can retain the title, but storming to a Doblete might not happen this time.

Madrid lose Zidane and Ronaldo. Barcelona lose Iniesta, and are in decline, although they have Messi. It’s Atlerico and Griezmann chance to win La Liga, hope they doesn’t bottle it.

Unless florentino buys Hazard and Kane to replaces Ronaldo.

It would hardly be bottling. It's probably the best odds Atleti have had at the start of the season in a long time but Barcelona and Madrid are still the favourites.

True, although I think Rodrigo is a really good signing. Nowdays they have the striker to play the way Simeone always wants to; Diego Costa is something else. Last year there was an Atletico before Costa arrived and a different Atletico afer he had arrived.

Barcelona may seem aging and on the decline but they also have a second season coutinho and an ever improving dembele.
Can't see Madrid replacing Ronaldo's goals, thus they might have patches of losses. Ronaldo missed five games and they feel back so far behind so early last season.

At least on paper, Atletico has the strongest squad in quite some time. It will be intersting to see if Simeone can use the potential of all the new players. In the past he frequently struggled to get the best out of new signings. That said, I expect them to be very very strong next year.

I am not fully convinced, that Valencia can repeat their last season. Marcelino is fantastic and they'll do well, but their transfers are a bit suspect. They are probably not buying Guedes, who was very important for them for many month. Additionally its very likely that they sign Gameiro, who was terrible for Atletico. It remains to be seen what happens to Rodrigo. Overall they could lack goals/creativity.

Sevilla will still make a couple of signings; the attack is pretty mediocre, but I expect 1-3 new players, who will improve things. Vaclik is a very solid signing, while Amadou might be another hidden gem. His first two performances in friendlies were very promising. Roque Mesa is another very solid player, who will help us a lot over the course of the season. Additionally Arana is almost like a new signing. Machin seems to like him (compared to Corchia who seems to get frozen out).
If we sign a targetman, a backup for Banega and another OM/SS, we'll compete for the 4th spot.

I like the sound of that:) And I had completely forgot that we have Arana! Yeah, we need to improve the squad, but it seems as if our opponents are moving in a faster pace...Especially Betis who has made great signings. I see them as big of a threat for the top 4 spot as Valencia.:nono:

In other news... Bartomeu or Rosell or both of them are now under investigation of 'trafficing'. I can't recall who, but one was caught in a tape recording, talking about how Abidal is ungrateful because they bought him his liver transplantation. Now the investigation is open, where there are big suspicion in spanish authorities that they bought Abidal's liver from the black market. It is claimed that Abidal's cousin donated his liver, but the recording the authorities have seems to contradict it. It is incredible how Barca are so solid on the field, as their board seem to be bunch of clowns off the field. Well, Rosell is already in prison, but still his corrupt junta is ruining Barca piece by piece.

And Rubiales and Castro finally agreed about the super copa... And today there are big news in Telesur that Rubiales may be under investigation for 'corruption' (whatever that means). Could become karma for firing Lopetegui for no rational reason...

Edit: according to ED Sevilla will make Sergi Gomez official any day. Good if true (I know Estadio Deportivo are not trustworthy), but we need a CB. Although I admit that I have no clue about this CB from Celta, but he can't be worse than the lot we have at the moment.

Europa League places: Villarreal, Real Betis ("Long live Betis even when they lose"), Sevilla
Relegated: Deportivo, Las Palmas, Malaga

Promoted from Liga2 for 2018/19: Huesca, Rayo Vallecano, Real Valladolid
I didn't realise Rayo Vallecano had been promoted....Awesome!

I'll miss Las Palmas. Malaga, too, but mainly because their 12/13 team was one of my favourites in recent years more-so than anything they've done since.

Betis will be interesting this year with Europa. I really like what Quique Setién's doing and they've already added a player I like in Inui.

Just reading up on Betis' transfer business and I had no idea they sold Ruiz to Napoli. That's a big loss. For only 27 million, too!

They've also brought in Canales and William Carvalho. Decent business!

Ha. :D

I didn't watch the final, 3rd place playoff and haven't watched Uniteds two pre-season games, though! I've kinda been closed off since (bar United news which is inevitable here) so I'm seeing the majority of these transfers all at once whilst I have some free time and it's admittedly getting me more intrigued!

A lot will depend on how much Gareth Bale stays fit. There's a lot of stock being put into Bale that he can replace Ronaldo, but the guy is so god damn injury prone.

As great as a goalscorer as he still is, Ronaldo's definitely declined as an all round footballer, if you cut off his supply, he often becomes invisible.

Well, it's the moment for Bale and Isco, they have no excuses anymore. They wanted to be treated as game-changers and world class stars, if they fail miserably, they can take their luggage to Everton and Napoli as they would be showing that's their level. It's obvious if the season is a disaster for Real Madrid the cleansing Florentino will make next year gonna be epic.

I still think a hard-working striker like Cavani would do wonders in Lopetegui's system.

About La Liga 2018-2019, not a lot of exciting signings yet beyond Barça, Madrid and Atleti. I guess most of the teams are waiting for the market's last week to see what they can catch in the sales of the bigger european teams. Betis has done well signing William Carvalho and Inui, great to see their project going forward, way more exciting right now than Sevilla imo.

Simeone already made clear he still rides the "miserable" wave. He's so charlatan, nobody can believe anymore he's keeping that speech lol

He's about to reach Pep's Peak in terms of annoyance playing the victim role. Massive c*nt. Once El Pupas, forever El Pupas. They are earning themselves to be mocked again.

Anyway, if this season he fails after keeping Griezmann, Oblak, Gimenez, Hernandez, Saul, Koke... and signing so many good players, there's no excuse. Goodbye, and good luck being Inter / Lazio coach.

The transfer of Joris Gnagnon from Rennes is getting finalised. Maybe one of the french posters can say something about him. If Sergi Gomez comes as well, this would give us enough CB options (Kjaer, Mercado, Carrico, Gnagnon, Gomez + Amadou/Escudero as options). We are also linked to Max Meyer. I highly doubt that this transfer is going to happen (and I don't rate him), but at least it indicates, that the managements is trying to sign another creative midfielder.

At this point Messi could play with 10 traffic cones and still manage 70+ points in the league. Every team bar Atletico, Valencia, and Espanyol and Sevilla at home are utterly petrified of him. Barcelona will focus massively on CL, even potentially throwing the league if it comes to that, but they have clearly the best team and should be favourites. Atletico look strong on paper, but might lose Godin yet and it remains to be seen whether they can push for 90+ points.

We have the biggest question marks: no Cris, new manager, and no other real changes to the team. But we'll be going all in on the league, and even without Cristiano the overall quality of the team should be enough to challenge for the title.

Valencia still look comfortable for 4th place, with sevilla and betis and villarreal competing for the EL spots

Are you expecting any big signings?

With the current squad, Barcelona going all in for the Champions League while Madrid should be more focused in the league is the only thing that’s making me think next season can actually be good for you.
