Perfectly fair comments and analysis. Quite the overreaction in here.

No surprise, though. Many on here are happy to throw our legends under the bus in order to defend a miserable mercenary manager who has us playing sleep-inducing football while getting decent-at-best results. It's a strange phenomenon.
Paul Scholes had spent his entire career being second judged. As a Kid he was laughed by other talent scounts and youth coaches because he couldn't last more then 20 minutes on the pitch without running out of breath. Harrison protected him and believed in him when most didn't. Scholes replaced Cantona magnificently during the suspension but SAF still brought in Teddy, forcing Scholes to move in CM. Then after so many sacrifices the boss added Veron to the team. He is in fact the only class of 92 who had to fight for a first team place with a world class player. His story with England is pretty much the same. He was second guessed multiple time as fans would argue if he's truly better then Gerrard or Lampard.

I'd expect him from all people to understand Pogba. The French man comes from a disadvantaged family. At age 16 he moved to England. Most of the class of 92 wouldn't even leave Manchester at that age let alone move to a new country altogether. At age 19 he took a courageous decision to move again and join a club which is absolutely ruthless with players. Many had failed at Juventus from Thierry Henry to Ian Rush, yet this kid, did the unthinkable and that despite having to compete for a first team place against the likes of Pirlo, Vidal and Marchisio. In 2016 he had the world at its feet yet he chose to join us (a downgrade compared to Juventus who were winning titles for fun) and that's because he felt he owe us one.

So seriously, why can't he can't get off his back for once? Its not his fault that we're not doing well.

that tourney is way tougher then you think. No wonder why the only living British players to have won it are now old pensioners.
or because its only every 4 years, meaning only 2 campaigns per decade. The tournament is certainly tough but its a different animal to a league campaign, especially when your nearest rival gets 100 pts. you need to have the mentality to get up for every game which is a criticism that has been aimed at Pogba from many sources including his manager. Scholes bottom level was around a 7/10. this is the type of consistency you need to win titles. I am not saying Scholes is some God, since I claimed Modric is better in the other thread, yet he knows how to win titles, and not like Juve, winning by 17pts with no competition.

I'm guessing people just want Scholes to stay quiet rather than state the facts? Can't argue with most of what he has said to be honest!
Scholes just says the same as what quite a few people do on here.

Some quotes from last season:
"We can’t use the fear of an away goal as an excuse, you have to say they’ve been poor," Scholes said.

'When it seems your main plan is to knock the ball up to Fellaini at the back post and play for knockdowns, that’s not good enough in the last 16 of the Champions League. You have to be better than that. Rashford was so exciting at the weekend against Liverpool on the left-hand side but he’s been put out on the right in order to get Sanchez into the team.'
----
"They approach every game conservatively. As good as they were on Saturday, they didn’t play great football. They got away with it because of the win. There’s a lot of performances that are exactly the same but get swept under the carpet."
----
"United keep spending money and yet you hear they are supposedly three or four players away. There are players in that squad to play good attacking football."
When asked whether Sanchez’s arrival stunted Rashford and Martial’s development, Scholes told BT Sport: “I think it did a little bit.

“Marcus [Rashford] and [Anthony] Martial, I think it stopped them playing.

“Was Sanchez a player at that time United needed? Possibly don’t think so.

“We know the qualities he has got, he’s had a great career.

“He hasn’t quite hit it off at United.

"He’s had one or two games where he’s done quite well but on the whole he hasn’t done as well as we would have expected.”
‘I’d like to think he’d stay, he’s a young player and he’s still got time to develop,’ said Scholes on BT Sport.

‘Whether his manager quite fancies him I’m not too sure about that at the minute, he’s not shown too much confidence in him.

‘I think he’s a really good talent, as I say young, there’s still time, I think he needs a bit of love he needs an arm around him.

‘He needs a consistent run of games, he’s coming in and every time he comes on he impresses me – he’s a player I’d like to have in my team.

‘I just hope he’s not one of those players that leaves and then we see the best of them. There is a danger.’

For each of those comments, there has been pretty much the same said on here. I agree with @Thunderhead. He expects and wants more from some players and teams. I don't think he's being deliberately malicious, just saying what he would as a fan.

And you know this because.....?

Was it the 2 trophies in his first season? The second place finish last season (our best since Fergie retired)? Enlighten me.
Are you blind? Look at him!

And who has mentioned season 1? In one off games we can still pull out a big win, over a league season he looks tired and worn out. Remind me where we finished in the league in his first season? Last season, it was clear 2nd was the best we could hope for after we got beat at home by City in December where he again went for the wrong tactics.

It's clear he isn't getting the best out of what he's got. Both Martial and Rashford's form tailed off badly towards the end of last season as did the whole team despite some big wins. His attitude has been confrontational, mostly with some of his own players and Woodward, and his attitude hasn't justified what we're seeing on the pitch.

I think there's more to it than that. Every time I watch England play I am stuck about how naive they are tactically. Some might attribute that lack of talent but its not. Their inability to hold the ball when it makes sense to do so. Their moronic tackles that cost them costly fouls, their inability to win a penalty shoot out, their obsession with 'workrate' and 'physicality' as if a football game is some gruesome shift in a coal mine. No wonder why there are no decent British managers still in the football.

Teams like Italy can do well with a crap side (unless they decide to force destiny hands by appointing a Serie C level manager). England tend to under perform even when they got the talent to do so. I mean take this very world cup as an example. Surely England had enough talent to comfortably win a James less Columbia without resorting to penalties? Surely they could play Belgium as equals or not lose out against Croatia.

Don't take me wrong. Pogba is still work in progress. He still got to develop and I agree with most of Scholes assessment in that interview. But telling him to use his brains more is disrespectful towards a player who is clearly one of the best CM in the world. You might consider that as a detail but coming from a club legend it is not. I don't think Scholes would appreciate if back in his day Robson would come out saying that scholes needed to use his brains more in terms of tackling

You don't think passion, motivation or inspiration exists or how am I to understand you?
Replace passion, motivation or inspiration with tempo, urgency, ability to play football without being a goal behind first. Often times we look so bored for the first 60mins before we realise we better try to win the game.

So, he doesn't smile enough for you, as I already said.

Also, there are a hundred threads for you to bitch about the manager in.

People have been saying that Scholes has been too negative about United ever since Fergie retired. The thing is, has there been much to be positive about? We’re spending tonnes of money and are constantly outclassed by other teams. Scholes is used to the club being better than every other team in the country, often by a margin. Is it any wonder that he’s had nothing positive to say in the last few years?!

I don't see what he said so wrong to be condemned like he is right now on here.

Is he jealous of Pogba? Give me a break. Silly comment.

Pogba, hasn't been as consistent or as impact-full as we would have liked. I think Scholes is correct in saying, he needs to use his brain a bit more and he needs to find a high level of consistency.

On the playing style of our game, it is poor to watch on the most part, I don't think too many top managers would have their teams play like that, but Jose does and as Scholes says, he is quite happy for United to play like that if the results are good.

Scholes is spot on in everything he said IMO.
Totally agree mate.

What a crock of shite. You sound like Pogba's mum. Henry failed at Juve as he was played out of position. There was actual competition in the league then. Juve win the league every season at a canter. They were already miles ahead when Pogba joined. There are a lot harder teams to join. Pogba got into the side because he is a big talent. United is a bigger club than Juve, much bigger exposure for his commercial aspirations and pay him considerably more.
He came to United because he is earning £350,000 per week mate.

Saw his interview in portuguese tv and thought it was appalling.

He's so biased against Mourinho that it's even funny. Like a kid saying bad things about a mate he dislikes.

Normally I find Scholes' punditry dull and at times, limited. But I'm a bit taken aback at the backlash he's received for simply stating his opinion. It's problematic because it's City but I struggle to see what he's done wrong here. Even the Pogba stuff is fair game as far as I'm concerned.

And no offence but look at the type of football that Scholes was famous for and then look at the two coaches in Mourinho and Guardiola. I think it's pretty obvious why he would prefer the latter.

Fair enough. It is a bit harsh and you are right about Scholes stature as a legend and what that would do to Pogba's mental state. he no doubt looked up to Scholes whilst a United youth so these words are cnutish. Scholes just has little tact or doesn't know how to articulate things and can only be frank. He obviously wants Pogba to be at his best

You highlighted two parts so let me tackle them separately

Yes Juventus are a ruthless club. The list of legends they kicked out when they didn't need them anymore or could make a good buck out of them is endless. Vialli, Baggio, Ravanelli and Del Piero to mention a few. Conte had to resign with little funfare after suffering a meltdown at the media because the club refused to bring him the players he wanted. We're talking here of a serial winner who won both as a Juventus player and as their manager. Meanwhile Youths are often sent on loan for years before they wear the shirt and unless a player does well for a long period of time he never returns back. You don't see Andersons, Shaws and players who spend 1-2 years on Juventus payroll out of respect (Gaz, Keane, Carrick) etc that's for sure.

United ended up 5th in 2015-2016 season, which meant that we would be playing in the Europa league that year. Ah and we also won the FA cup for all its worth. Juventus on the other hand won the Serie A title, the Supercoppa Italiana and were knocked out by Bayern Munich in a thrilling game. So yes they are currently the bigger club and moving to us was indeed a downgrade. Same can be said about history. Juventus won 34 Serie A titles as opposed to our 20 EPL titles. They won 13 Coppa Italia while we won 12 FA cups. They won 2 UEFAs as opposed to our 1 Europa league cup. They won 2 European super cups as opposed to our 1 European super cup and we're equal in terms of cups winners cup. TBF we won 3 CLs as opposed to their 2 but they are quite unlucky with that cup and should have won way more then that.

He certainly had a pay rise to come to Manchester. But to be fair he could get that money elsewhere especially at Madrid which is also a bigger club then we are both in terms of past and present.

Juve had to downgrade their stadium due to lack of support. They are not United big mate and the EPL is a far bigger league. I am sure Spartak Moscow has many league titles but hey!
The actions of Juve are pretty standard of any supposedly big club if you want to compete. I wouldn't exactly label that "ruthless", its the nature of the beast. P.S. all the players you named were from the 90's when Serie A had many great teams and fierce competition. recently its been a walk in the park. non comparable. Pogba would've got turfed by 90s Juve too.

he’s only speaking the truth, have no issues with him whatsoever.

He’s a fan like all of us and he probably hates how mediocre and negative we are especially compared to when he played

And no he isnt Jelous of Pogba that’s just a stupid statement.

Some of the comments in here

He is speaking the truth and what the majority of United fans know to be true, how such a big deal is made out of this is just embarrassing. Pogba is still a developing player and his decision making needs to get better like so many in the team. Hopefully it’ll come with age, nothing wrong with what Scholes said.

Its actually an upgrade since they left Delle Alpi (ie state owned stadium) to Allianz Stadium (Juventus owned stadium). They have more league titles then we have, more European trophies then we have and more FA cups then we have. They are currently in way better shape then we are. In the past half a decade they won 5 Serie A titles and reached the CL final twice. So yes they are a bigger club who are in a better shape then we are. The only two things we're better is in terms of money and support base which in some ways makes us look bad considering that they do better then us despite having far less resources then we do.

Ah and they can actually develop players who actually understand football. This place would implode if one of SAF's players had won 1/4 the trophies the likes of Conte, Deschamps and Zidane had won. Which is silly really since neither of these players had tutors to the level of SAF. Instead here we are with yet another former player speaking as if he's a football expert despite neither him nor his mates had done anything tangible at managerial level. Maybe if they used their brains a bit more and they actually learnt something from SAF then they would be managing/coaching players instead of simply discussing it.

Don't like the constant, "Oh if only Guardiola were United manager" crap! It belittles the club and even worse when it's your local rivals

Other than that, he's just said what we've all been saying

It's a valid perspective - they're the best team in the country and, geographically, our closest rivals. Both managers started at the same time with similar work to do and one has nailed it while the other flounders. That comparison isn't going away.

their domestic domination doesn't make them bigger since their league isn't highly valued over the past decade and ever since the scandal. We have more Champions Leagues than them and its neck and neck in European trophies overall. I agree they have a bigger team but they are not a bigger club. Juve have more titles than Barcelona but Barcelona are certainly a bigger club. They are in better shape

His opinion isn't relevant anymore. You can only suspect it's jealousy at this point. Pogba won the world cup. Something Scholes never did. Put some respect on his name.

The Serie A had seen better times but there again, we utterly dominated the local pond for years, especially between SAF's first EPL title and up until Wenger signed with Arsenal were it was basically one horse race similarly to what Juventus are currently facing. With the only difference that while they reached the CL final twice in the past 5 years we used to get regularly thrashed in the CL. In fact the gap between the EPL and the Serie A back then was so big that an Alan Smith type of player (ie Ravanelli) could come to the EPL and absolutely own the place. That's how ridiculous it was back then

Juventus has a long history and had been consistently good in football for the past 88 years. They consistently won the title in every decade since the 30s. We're pretty much a two managers club with a staggering 18 EPL titles out of 20 won by just 2 managers. Our history between 67 and the 92s is nearly non existent. So seriously I can't see how we can say we're a bigger club to a club who had won more league titles then we have, more European trophies then we have, more FA cups then we have and had been far more consistent then we ever were. We're talking of a club who won a staggering 14 titles more then we did. That's not a frigging joke. If you subtract that from our tally then you would wipe out all SAF's title achievements + 1 (SAF won 13 EPL titles). In terms of trophies we would be at par with Aston Villa (+ 1 too as Villa won 7). That's hardly insignificant isn't it?

We're richer then Juventus and we've got more supporters then they do but we're nowhere near to them in terms of history and we're certainly nowhere near to them both in terms of developing managers and in terms of present side. Our best run was around 25 years. They have been dominating the league for nearly 90 years and seem to be extending that run for a while longer than that

Thing is Scholes pretty much talking in cliches, and cliches people love to repeat. While it's not wrong, it's very general which offers no solution to solve any problems

For example:

Rashford 2 goals was the work of aerial ball. Winning the header and the timing of the run that make it work is as important as play left or play right. Without winning those header vs L'pool leading to goals, Rashford could be exciting to watch most of other occasions, but would his performance be deemed as good as it was? It didn't work against Sevilla who kept good distance and not incompetent in the air as L'pool, but you expect better punditry like ". We need to play through the middle so subbing Pogba on at half time so he has more time to settle in the game, as tactic around aerial ability with Fellaini didn't work well"...

As @devilish pointed out, someone like Scholes would understand that a player at top club, fighting for their place is part of the job. Managers can be wrong doesn't stop the players to prove him wrong. Instead, here in spoiler 2, Scholes repeat the clicle as if because an old players take their place, young players can be justified by stopping to play. And we're rather keeping blaming on thing which can't be undone instead of working to solve the (new) problem. Alexis was bad, yet the other can't bring more positive when they had the chance!

I'll leave Martial part as it's discussed to death regarding the cliche about " need a consistent run of games..." This cliche has been used for pretty much every footballer that the pundits entitled their opinion to, yet without acknowledging players' weakness/why those players were not preferred in certain circumstances.

Back to these new Pogba and Pep quote, same shite. "Pogba needs to use his brain little more". Why not point out exactly what he needs to do then? It's like saying "United managers should be more like SAF". SAF is respectable to new managers by keeping distance lest undermining the new managers even if they do bad. His former students on the other hands are very different... If Guardiola was manager of @ManUtd he'd hate what he was seeing". He chose to be in City so the question is "why United can't be aspired to be like City, so Pep chooses United in the first place?!!"
