I feel that we need a positive thread in between all the doom and gloom here, so let’s look at the positives;

  • Sanchez will most likely (certainly?) improve on last season. I just don’t see a player of his calibre not delivering this season.
  • Pogba is very likely to keep developing and improving too. He’s only 25 and most central midfielders peak in their late twenties.
  • We have lots of young players like Rashford, Lingard (not that young, but a late bloomer), Lindelöf, Bailly (again, center backs rarely peak at a young age) who will most likely improve.
  • Lukaku will probably only get better. He has only been here for a season.
  • We have a few ~world class players like De Gea, Pogba, Sanchez and Lukaku. Star players that are needed to win the biggest titles.
I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as some seem to believe. Oil Winton who is known to have connections within the club just said to the Scandinavian supporter club that the general mood within the squad is good.

Lastly, I read somewhere that the last time we had a pre season worse than this one in terms of points (it was before our last game) was in the summer of 98. We all know what happened after that . My point is that pre seasons rarely define the following season. Last pre-season we beat Real 3-1 early on IIRC. We met them a few weeks later in the super cup and it didn’t go very well. So let’s not make any judgements based on the pre-season performances. I remember some great-ish performances during the LvG pre-season. They rarely mean anything.

Anyone but Rashford
At this point it seems a Nuclear Holocaust would be a more positive forecast than what's being suggested.

I'm excited to see our full strength midfield in action - It has potential to be a real force.

Hoping Alexis can kick on and recover his Arsenal form - He needs to get more in tune with Pogba and Lukaku.

Dalot is a very exciting prospect and hoping he can challenge for a starting birth before long.

Waiting for some actual meaningful football to be played before losing my mind, which clearly puts me in the minority. I'm not happy about the signings/preparation but there's still enough there to be a good team.

We finished second in the league last season, we’ll be competing in best cup competition in the world, we’ll be competing with Europe’s elite, we have some great players in our squad, and we’re Manchester United! Could be a lot worse.

I mean I don’t want to be a buzz kill but do people not look through the available threads. This is the 4th creation of a thread similar to this.

Good idea. It's not easy to participate in other thread, you don't even know where to begin.

And the same thing is said multiple times over multiple thread. It gets tiring at some point.

Here's a few points you can add there.

  • Better cohesion from the team, which is worth a few points more than last season.
  • City is never gonna have the same or more points than last season whereas we can improve our tally, it's gonna be closer than last year.
  • We have improved in an area where we struggled last year (when Pogba was out and basically lost touch with city then), while city, our main title contender didn't improve, Mahrez is gonna add depth, he's of the same quality than their wingers. So hopefully, we' ll catch up a little there.
  • It looks like our players have grown up mentally, you could see their performances in the world cup, so it's exiting to see what they're gonna do this year.

It's unfortunate that a battle exists between the positive and negative United fans on this board, but that's just the way it is around here at the moment. I'm sure it will calm down when the football kicks off.

Ok I’ll play. I think Sanchez is going to have a good season, hopefully Pogba as well. This will probably be a make or break season for Jose so no matter what side of the divide you fall on answers will be provided. We’ll hopefully get to see Dalot hopefully come here and blossom. Pereira has looked really good in pre season as he has in many others hopefully this year he can capatalise and will become a main stay in the team.

Soon known posters will enter this and turn out to a complete negative Mourinho thread as usual. Enjoy these few minutes before it happens.

Why is it a problem? Why does this bother you?
Because it splits discussion between threads instead of focusing everyone in to one page to discuss a common intrest. It also then knocks possibly other interesting threads down the pecking order so people don’t see them.
Anyway this is the positive thread, do not derail.

Haha, that's funny, I didn't derail it. You did.

Anyway, okay, let's see how this one goes and hopefully people respect the 'positive' side of it and feck of with the negatives to other threads.

Let's improve the mood in the cafe. It'll help us wait till the begining of the season at least.

We need to have a cards on the table tagging system.

Those who are positive can have 'Oh yay Jose' and those who are negative can have 'no way Jose' as their tag.

At the end of the season we'll see who was right.

If you put too many people on ignore the forum can become a bit unreadable with pages of people seemingly replying to no-one

Manchester United’s new third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant has dismissed the idea that manager Jose Mourinho is unhappy at the club after a lack of transfer activity this summer.

The 35-year-old, who surprisingly joined from Stoke City to act as back-up to the likes of David De Gea and Joel Pereira, is one of Mourinho’s three summer signings, with Fred and Diogo Dalotalso joining.

However, Mourinho wanted five new faces through the door and has already publicly declared his frustration at that not yet happening, with the transfer deadline at 5pm on 9th August.

But despite the public perception of the manager during preseason, Grant has insisted Mourinho is upbeat and enthusiastic working behind the scenes.

"From what we're getting from the inside it [the atmosphere around the camp] has been nothing but positive," the United goalkeeper told Sky Sports News.

"He's come in even after the Liverpool game and spoken very highly of what we have given as a team and as a unit.

"The messages we are getting from the manager are positive ones and that is important for us going forward. His attitude and demeanour around the place is great and that is helpful for us especially when we are under-manned and we are working our hardest.

"We are well aware at this stage of the season you have got to work hard and get the minutes into the legs and that is what we are doing."

Not asking for too much with this list:

Alexis will have a player of the year season
Lukaku & Rashford will go up another level
Pogba turns up consistantly week in week out
Fred turns out to be one of the best midfielders in the league
Pereira cements his place as a vital squad member
Bailly stays fit and shows he is one of the best defenders in the league
Shaw magically turns into the full back we hoped
Dalot turns out to be one of the best young talents in Europe
Jose gets his extra signing (or two)
Carrick and McKenna get us playing some fluid, exciting football
All the negativity pre-season has just been a Mourinho ploy and he surprises the world by winning the league. Journalists across the land feel pig sick. Pep has to take another sabatical. Klopp jumps off a bridge.

Calm down?? This is but pre-season banter its only about to kick off when the season starts. Imagine if we are 6 points behind a free flowing Liverpool by November it will be civil war.

Fred could be a serious playmaker. I think he has been touted on here as some kind of Kante player but if you watch his highlights it is all through balls and nice link ups. Could surprise people positively.

- Jose Mourinho's press conferences have little or no bearing on how well the team is capable of playing on the pitch or how well he is capable of managing them.

- Our squad is actually in theory stronger than last year. With new additions and no key players leaving. No one at an age where their level of performance should significantly decrease and a number at an age where you can expect improvement.

- none of our rivals have done much if anything to strengthen, with the exception of Liverpool who've bought players who I don't think I'd be happy with us signing (with the exception of Keita).

- I'm actually quite interested and excited to see if Sanchez can bed in to this team, as his work rate and ability are both still at a very high level. Similarly interested to see if Lingard can continue his form from last season...I also expect our performances will be more lively than the second half of last season.

- Pereira has looked very good in pre season and probably forced himself into Jose's thinking for the start of the season.

- starting the season short of players is a bad thing but it gives other players a chance and usually when thst happens one or two surprise you.

Bring it on. Can't wait for the new season to start. There's so many reasons to look forward to it. Plenty of youngsters ready to blossom into very good players. Sanchez looks sharp after a rest.
Another year of the best keeper in world. A striker who performs every year. Fred and Pogba in the midfield;can't wait to see that. Rashford and Jesse maturing after a WC campaign. etc etc

About Jose; his moaning and carrying on to me is so entertaining. I love watching everything he does. He's such a character just sit back and have a good laugh. Same with the Caf; I love reading all of the views from around the world, negative and positive. So I say again bring it on. Go United!

Chong looks exciting. Pobga is more mature and WC winner now too.

United has vast resources so sooner or later you pop up.

As a Pool fan I must just hope Jose manages to piss off Pobga seriously so he wants out and bad. But I don't think so.

But it is quite amazing what you read affects your mood. By just reading the positive it lifts the mood. That as an casual observer and postet in these forums.

Maybe the mods can delete all the negative posts in this thread.

What I would give for all this to become true. Very unlikely though.

I think we're gonna have a much better season than the current doom and gloom in the press would have people believe.

I would have liked to see us strenghten some more but Pereira will be like a new signing. I'm also expecting big things from Sanchez, he looks pretty sharp.

There is a heck of a lot of room for improvement from last season. We actually have a very strong squad although id like it to be strengthened, but we just werent getting anywhere near enough of out what we have last season.

If we can figure out Sanchez, Pogba, Lukaku with Lingard and Rashford popping up here and there then we could having a remarkably formidable attack.

Last season the descent accelerated, this pre season has seen the forum plummet to almost non usable levels. The amount of anger, complaining, indignation and what at times seems like hatred towards the club and manager and some players or ex players, before a ball has been kicked is unprecedented. I suggested it last season and a few people were receptive, I’d love to see an up and down vote system for posts and x amount of negative votes deletes the post.

I’m not suggesting censorship or that we should all agree on a narrative, but there’s plenty of room for debate and arguing and passion without pumping threads full of utter rubbish often based on newspaper speculation or a posters own boredom. The amount of times today alone I’ve read the club described as an embarrassment or a disgrace , and what has actually happened? Nothing.

So yeah, in terms of positivity, it feels more and more like this once top forum isn’t the place to get it. It’s becoming a more organised YouTube comments section

That's how I feel. I have positive and negative thoughts going into the season and I have posted accordingly in many different threads. But the Cafe isn't the same as the one I used to stalk back in the day or even like the one I eventually joined a few years ago. The negativity really is getting me down.

Not that anybody will care  but I imagine that after ten years I’ll deactivate before the season. It’s not worth it, would sooner limit football chat to people I know and engage with by choice

I feel that we need a positive thread in between all the doom and gloom here, so let’s look at the positives;

He, I agree with all of that but, there’s always a but, the players could be 11 of the best in a the world but won’t perform if they keep getting knocked back in public by the manager. It’s the Manager that is creating all the apprehension. The BBC have done a poll regarding JM’s motives for his outbursts including preparing to leave or get the sack.

All real fans want the team to win everything naturally, but they also want entertaining football and no soap opera antics, at least I do.

  1. Three of our best players are relatively young and will be vital for our squad the next five years: DDG, Pogba and Lukaku.
  2. We have a number of young players that are already capable, and can still improve a lot: Rashford, Martial, TFM, Andreas Pereira, Bailly and Lindelof.
  3. We have some unproven, but very exciting prospects at the club: Chong, Tuanzebe, Joel Pereira and Dalot to mention the ones closest to the first team.
  4. We have a very high revenue and income and can make major investments in players over a short period of time if absolutely needed.
So even if this season turns to shit or we deliver below expectation, there is still so much to build on.

Don't we have this thread already? Also whenever I see a thread with this kind of title I get Ian Dury "Reasons to be Cheerful" running through my head. Thanks. For. That.
