Sampodria parked the bus, man marked MvB to get that result. Is that happening here? MJJ can't afford to do that here without starving his own forwards.. Misleading Stat ignoring context.

It was not Vierchowod vs MvB but all defence vs MvB!

If you park the bus and man mark, even a Phil Jones defence could earn a dear against Pele.

Put MvB vs Vierchowood one on one in an. Open game, like what's happening here and MvB will come on top 8 times out of 10.
 They played 11 times and he only scored one goal.

@Indnyc watch those videos. Milan was the stronger team and the respect they show van Basten is obvious, esp in first video. If a team is playing for a draw, it's difficult for any striker to score. What's happening in this match has no relevance to what happened there. Vierchowood has better partners and so has van Basten. No way Vierchowod is keeping MvB and Eusebio quiet all match.

And are you similarly parking the bus here? Putting all bodies behind Vierchowod?
Am I playing a defense of bonetti, lanni and vierchowod?

If it was so easy why does every player of that era including van basten partner in crime, gullit, credit vierchowod for stopping van basten?

Also this deserves a 1000 laughing smiley. All the liverpool supporting pics have gone to your head mate.

Having Scirea doesn't recreate that. What's he, a one man bus? His game ain't like that
Point being that the mismatch is not as big as the milan vs sampdoria side.

Also, why was every other defense not doing the same? If it was as easy as putting ten men behind hte ball? I know you want to win but atleast try to be reasonable.

Anyways, point made. Vierchowod nullified MVB, you can keep living in a fantasy world where jones can do the same to pele.

Where was Vierchowod when he scored?

No need to create a strawman.

1988 Supercopa Italiana: Milan 3 - 1 Sampodria

In the Italian Super Cup for the whole of the first half, there are raised elbows, tackles on the verge of denunciation, little passionate hugs and metal sparks throughout the lawn. Van Basten becomes the protagonist of spectacular shots, including a splendid right to turn after having freed himself with a game of prestige. Mark Vialli for the blucerchiati and Rijkaard with a peremptory detachment. In the second half, Pradella replaces Vierchowod and is again (only) Milan - Sampdoria. Mannari and just the Dutch Marco from the disk sign the 3 to 1.
Self evident!

@Indnyc @Jim Beam more evidence contrary to the Vierchowod is superman theory!

erm how exactly?

It was 1-1 until vierchowod got subbed off and then milan scored two goals which in theory shouldnt be possible since phil jones can defend against pele blah blah.

Pillow I know you are mad that vierchowod completely neutralized MVB whenever they faced each other but please read before you post.

van Basten's class was evident even before as the article clearly illustrates.

And here is a quite from Pietro himself:

Vierchowod said:
I faced very strong strikers: from Bettega to Pruzzo, from Graziani to Altobelli. Pin was complete; agile, powerful, technically gifted, snappy and slippery, one of the most difficult to mark. I must admit, however, that those who drove me crazy were Selvaggi; at the end it made my head spin, it was unattainable. But the number one was Van Basten; when it was the same day it became devastating, immarctable. Even for me, I admit it ».

I wouldn't go into reading too much into these "my greatest ever opponent" quotes.

Of course it was? It's MVB ffs. He will have impact through out the match and is a very tough opponent. That's why it's a tesrament to vierchowod that he kept him quiet. It does not mean MVB was shit.

I am not surprised he considers him his toughest opponent, shows the level of respect both have for each others abilities.

But then you continue to portray a team performance as individuals. van Basten's influence despite being marked is clearly there to see.

Me and the rest of the footballing world yes. I am sure after the match is over you wojld do the same so it's pointless to continue this.

The same MVB magically scored after vierchowod left despite being marked and somehow destroyed all the other serie a defenses despite being marked.

Do you seriously think that sampdoria were the only team who employed this tactic? I don't blame you for trying to defend his poor record but at one point one should accept defeat as it's hard to take your arguments seriously.

This is going round in circles so let's ask a different question to get a bit of a different discussion going.

Zidane, how are you dealing with him?

He's up against a DLP (with defensive nous) and a B2B in Seedorf. Are either (or both combined) going to be enough to limit his influence here?

Just randomly stumbled upon this

Azpiliceuta against Barcelona. You can see how little change Suarez gets out of him here, and also the numerous times he covers for his wing back by going out wide.

It's not a perfect performance don't get me wrong, but claiming that he'd be average or a liability in defence is way wide of the mark. Also important to note the level of defenders he has around him here. Christiansen and Rudiger are both not at the level you'd expect to be able to limit Barcelona.

The reason it's going round in circles is because your Am deals with hyperbole and makes statements like phil Jones can stop Pele.
I used to like the ZZ top videos and Zidane has the same initials.
Ah but I have zaul zogba on the bench.

Yeah, but heard he's on his way to Zarcelona and I hate them.

Like your defence, like their attack. Tbh, tight (as is vote).

@Gio could be the decider.

Good game @MJJ
No idea how we lost that, but some of the highest voting numbers I've seen so glad it was a good game.
Definitely a tough defeat to take considering that front 3 could have been set till the final.

Think I switched votes today without an explanation but I felt the game was really really close, but felt @MJJ was winning the debate and I thought he deserved the slight edge for that.

One of the more entertaining game for sure. Cheers.

Yeah being on nights doesn't really help when it comes to the debates.

I tried getting MJJ to answer on Zidane as it was obvious he had no answer (avoided it a couple of times) and even showing Azpiliceuta nullifying Suarez, but when you're posting with no one around it's hard to gain traction.

Great game that, one for the ages for sure.

At the start, I wanted to vote for PNut, but MJJ came back big time with his arguments. He did really well with digging up that Vierchowood story and also how he portrayed PNuts defenders and midfielders as average (which I don't think they are, but I disliked having two defensive midfielders plus 3 central defenders just against the central threat of Riquelme and Suarez - seemed like a waste of resources).

The key points for me were the fullbacks of MJJ, although they weren't mentioned at all:wenger: They have free routes for forward arrays, will gift MJJ the better buildup play and I think both are pretty good in creating chances.

MJJ also somehow led the voters to belief that Zidane won't run havoc against Seedorf and Blanchflower, dunno how he did that:lol:

Not read it all, but i like to check in on drafts now and then, just because i'm curious on what teams people put together.

This time, i'm just curious on how you can have rigged votes on The Caf

The reason why I did not mention it is that it gets ignored here. Like I was arguing in the thread, 5-3-2 seems to give drafters some kind of magical pass where the wingbacks never get overlapped and yet provide width for attack at the same time. It would not have made much of a difference to argue that as I have tried to do so in the past.

I could have answered that if edgar did not waste time arguing that jones can defend against pele.
