Guys, on Netflix right under "Last Chance U" theres a special about the guys from S1 and 2. Including extensive stuff about B.Wag, Ollie, Franklin III and Isaiah Wright (including courtroom). So stop guessing willya? :)

This HC at Independence is an absolute bellend but for some reason I kind of love him

The head coach in season 3 makes the one from the first two seasons seem like Vince Lombardi by comparison. To be fair he seems to care about the kids a lot more than Stephens did. Malik Henry seems to have an un-diagnosed personality disorder.

 he's got a rather simplistic approach from what I've seen so far in the first episode. He can get them fired up and energised but when he was sat in that hot tub with his cigar talking about how football isn't that complicated and guys will run through walls if they believe in you etc. it did make me wonder if he puts too much emphasis on that side of things rather than the playbook.

I loathed Henry at the beginning-to-mid-point of the season but started to sympathise with him when his father entered the fray. What an absolute wanker that guy is. Helicopter parenting at its worst. I get the impression that Malik doesn’t even like football and would prefer to be still playing baseball. The father is going to end up ruining the kid, which is rich considering he only re-entered Malik’s life when it looked like he was destined for the big time and is now dictating every life choice for him. The father really is a douchebag.

I have literally never heard of an American Football coach who did not think studying film was that important until watching him in that first episode. But, he deserves credit for the self awareness to know that he is not that great of a coach and that his success is based off recruiting top talent.

And the strange thing is if he is just looking at his son as a meal ticket baseball would have been a great choice. If he showed the same sort of talent in baseball that he has as a QB(and there is obviously a lot of transferable skills between QB and pitcher) Malik could have signed a multi million signing bonus right out of HS. And MLB teams love drafting guys who were high level QBs(Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray was taken in the first round of the MLB draft even though he has not played a ton of baseball the last 4 years.

What I find bizarre is both coaches would rant and scream and go off on their players then wonder why they acted like dickheads on the field sometimes. Not exactly setting the right example on being calm and professional

I'm not very surprised by this. Playing, coaching or even watching a competitive team sport brings out emotions, for better or worse. I consider myself a very mild-mannered human being and have never been in a fight in my adult life, yet i found myself offering that idiot next to me in the stands a few punches on the nose if he didn't shut up and yelled abuse at my best friend on the pitch a few times :D

What never ceases to amaze me, though, is that the US folks care more about what words they use, than the intent behind them. Cursing about a youth player who won't play because of a concussion apparently is very ok as long as you don't use any f-words and have a good prayer afterwards.

Jason Brown, the HC of season 3, has a very big advantage over Buddy Stephens imo - He has the biggest gutter mouth i've ever witnessed, but he is authentic, he doesn't pretend to be someone he isn't. As opposed to Stephens who, imo, is a huge hypocrite. The players have figured this out in a few minutes i believe, as it is impossible to hide.
Problematic is that only the players with a strong personality can deal with something like that, the weaker ones will be left on the road. But then maybe i'm being naive as this is clearly a system designed to weed out material unsuitable for the pro league, it isn't about developing character or aiding troubled teenagers.

Finally finished s3 today. In fact that's all I've done :D.

Does anyone else think Malik Henry has a serious dose of depression? Find it hard none of the coaches could see that when it was plainly obvious.

finished it yesterday. My completely incompetent diagnose through the tv screen is i saw nothing about Malik that i would interpret as being depressive. Utterly unhappy, yes. But not depression. Wasn't sure about boby Bruce, though. I may be wrong.

This Buddy Stephens has to be one of the biggest cnuts ever. No surprise that ref threw a punch at him. Surprised none of the players knocked his ass out.

I've just got to the episode where his dad appears and completely agree with everything you said. What an arsehole that guy is. Hopefully the kid sees his dad for what he is before too long.

He’s not wrong, to be honest.

Some coaches go wayyyyy too complicated with a playbook.

The best way to get the most out of your players is to have a smaller playbook that the kids can easily remember and play fast in, combined with kids who believe in your system.

But yeah, that side of him is completely opposed to everything I believe in as a football coach.

Hell, I’ve got film on watching today’s practice as I type this.

A lot of the yelling and stuff like that done in coaching is to intentionally put pressure on the player. If they can handle me in their ear in practice, I know they can’t handle the pressure of a game.

That’s not saying they don’t go over the top sometimes, but a calm practice won’t prepare a player for a chaotic game.

Season 3 was excellent, coach Brown is hilarious but his ‘recruitment’ seriously leaves about half of his kids who don’t get minutes in a situation where they don’t have enough tape to get selected by schools.
The season touched on it in 1 or 2 episodes but I think it hid the issue largely, most of these guys go to last chance U in order to get out of JUCO and recently get to college.
Buddy seemed to care more about the future of his players than Brown did, in that respect.

Also has anyone watched QB1 on Netflix?
Follows 3 of the best young quarterbacks in their last year of high school, I thought it was great.

There was Tony Dungy who was known for not really raising his voice. And in other spots some of the younger coaches pride themselves on being able to get their point across without yelling much(especially in Basketball and Football). But, obviously that style would be more difficult in American Football since American Football is a extremely violent game.

Tony Dungy is definitely a prominent exception to the rule, but even he was 1 man on a staff of over a dozen in a practice. There was yelling and intensity at Dungy’s practices, there just wasn’t yelling for no reason.

Don’t get me wrong, yelling just to yell is stupid. If all you do is yell then the players stop realizing that you yelling means anything and it becomes your “norm” to them.

I think my favourite part is when the WR coach picked up the headset and threw it and then looked him dead in the eye and just head faked him. Almost as good is Malik Henry just telling everyone he fecked their mom. I fecked your mom, I fecked your mom too.

It looked like he just did not want to be playing football anymore. He just seemed to be doing it because thats what people wanted from him. Deeply unhappy (and a bit of whingy little shit).

The best was when one of the refs warned Malik about cursing and he tells the ref yeah whatever eff you.

Or this

 Even there he pulls a your mom. His chirps are so terrible its hilarious.

73's a bitch, hut hut. Is a classic. He's just your little kid on CoD with your mom jokes.

He clearly doesn't even want to play football and his dad is a scumbag who came out of the woodwork and just controls the kid now. Makes you feel bad for him.

The weird thing is the documentary doesn't really show him to be a great player, yet Coach Brown lets him talk shit to him much more than the other players. Maybe the editing is a little harsh on him.

Rakeem Boyd appears to be the real superstar to come through.

Looking up his stats they were pretty mediocre. 10tds 8ints 55%comp pct. But, it does not seem like Brown really had a great offensive scheme and Brown/Malik were obviously not on the same page.

Malik Henry obviously doesn't have his heart in it to go pro. Just watching the last ep. and even then he's questioning the sanity of getting hit over and over. His dad pushing him to bulk up and he looks like he'd rather be anywhere else.

Just read that Ronald Ollie from season one (who I think everybody loved) is going to rookie minicamp with the Oakland Raiders.

Watched the first 3 episodes S05 and find it very enjoyable so far! Finally a head coach who is neither a bigot nor a dick, but actually seems like a decent human being :)
Only caught the first half of E01 myself in bed last night as it was getting late, but I got good vibes from Coach Beam myself.

These players (and staff, it must be said) are a resilient bunch. Living in the Bay Area is financially-crippling and these folk grind it out there on basic salaries, with the players often combining football, studies and part-time work every night. Full respect to them.

Only 1 episode in. Coach beam seems like a good guy, the staff might get annoying though. Players don't seem to bad... Rejzohn Wright cocky shit but there is always one. That guy Dior sleeping in his car after lying to his family was pretty heartbreaking.

I finished E04 last night and I can’t help but feel these guys are so much more relatable than the players in previous seasons. They are sacrificing so much just to have a shot at a scholarship and they appear to be under enormous pressure every single practice and game day.

Rezjohn, RJ and particularly Dior seem like stand-up guys and have to deal with a lot of shit that no youngster should have to experience. I’m really rooting for them to do well.

P.S. How pissed off was the guidance counsellor (?) who was chairing the Pacific Islanders group meeting when Beam waltzed into the room, interrupted everything and just shat on some of the players for missing class and plagiarising papers? All the while Beam was patronisingly pawing him like they were best buddies. So awkward.
