I tried playing this using an emulators. Could not see what all the fuss is about. I guess the game has not aged well.

Soften the blow for when the Shenmue III delay is announced?

It would be nice if saved games carried over into 3 like they did in the first two games.
Did you do that thing at the start of game 2 spending all your cash from game 1 buying all the capsules, so you sell them later when your money's been stolen.

This is great news though, later then I thought but felt like Sega would never so this.

Fantastic news. Missed them back then and couldn't make them work smoothly in emulator.

Ha! Yeah that does sound kind of familiar. All that time practicing my roundhouse kicks in the park really paid off in 2 as well.

I have both on the Dreamcast. Not sure if I'll go back, though. There's a lot of shit in there that I don't think will go down well in this day and age.

Corrrect. In its day though it was stunning. Still got my original copy in the loft - incredible game.

My 7th favourite game of all time - can’t wait to play it again :)

It hasn’t, you’re spot on.

I had this chat with my brother yesterday. Shenmue like Yakuza, is a hugely overrated ‘cult’ game.

In reality both series are as boring as watching West Brom.

It's an excellent game. For it's time though.

Obviously nearly everything has been done in other games since, which makes playing it now tough for those unlucky enough not to have played it at the time. But on release and for a long while after, it was an epic experience. I doubt this will win over new players to the series though. I also doubt 3 will ever get a real release which is a shame, because it's the only thing I've risked a kickstarter on (knowing full well there was a high chance of it being terrible or not at all).

As for Yakuza, my Mrs has played the last two releases and really liked them so there are new players to be had there. I don't personally, like you say they are too boring for me these days.

I remember the combat system being fantastic at the time. It had a great sense of place and atmosphere. I fully expect most of the mechanics to feel hugely dated, but if it can recapture that atmosphere and the combat system holds up I'll be very happy.

Yakuza 0 was pretty good when they were able to give the charismatic and far more likeable Majima a fleshed story arc and take away from wooden Kazuya.

I’m not a fan of the overarching plot of the rest of the series much.

I think the story is as good as ever. The mechanics are definitely dated. Quick time events are largely a thing of the past as far as I know. I hope with Shenmue 3 they bring the gameplay forward. That said...I'm probably still buying 1 and 2 for some nostalgia/to finally finish 2.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The Yakuza series is phenomenal! And yeah, Shenmue hasnt aged well at all, will still be nice to go back.

Actually, about 18 months ago I emulated Shenmue, completed it, and then tried to get the 2nd game running but it wouldnt launch.

Thats when I decided to emulate Yakuza 1. Then 2 (the best in the series). Then I bought 3, 4, and 5 on Amazon.

Heard the game in general hasn't aged well...
Is it a turn-based rpg by any chance? (know it's a quick Google, but caf>google)

It hasn't aged well and it ain't turn-based rpg. The story of it looks quite interesting though, but I played it just for a couple of hours or so.

It's not going to appeal to modern gamers in general, no. It's not turn based either, it's an action adventure and basically what stuff like Yakuza and Sleepimg Dogs borrowed heavily from.

It was amazing for it's time though, I'll be getting this and kickstarted the third, but I struggle to reccommend it to newer gamers if I'm honest.

Maybe I'll find someone doing a playthrough of the game then when the HD is out. It's got a great rep after all.

It's actually worth watching just for the unintentional comedy if you get someone playing in full English voice over. It's hilarious. It's not turn based, but it is very slow paced there's actually not that much fighting in it at all. It's more of a detective game/awkward weirdo simulator. When the action does kick off though it's great, it's got an engine based off Virtua Fighter.

I was informed it was unlocking at 11pm, but alas it hasn't unlocked yet. It's one of my favourite games of all time, I'm half excited and half dreading playing this port. I wish it would hurry up, the people of Yokosuka aren't going to ask themselves awkward questions!

"Kiss off, twit!"

Funniest line I've seen in this playthrough so far when interacting with a random kid, "Hey mister, wanna wrestle?" The fecking weirdo

Ryo will literally knock on every door in Sakuragaoka except for the one person he's looking for.
