A pity he has to quit cause of that.

Weird that he'd quit being a referee because of that. A sabbatical would make sense.
Refereeing is hard enough without having major off the field distractions. Add in an emotionally charged situation like he's found himself in and it's no wonder he's walked away. It takes years and years to get to the level he's at (someone mentioned 10 years but that's in rare circumstances) so for him to decide that enough's enough, he really must have put some thought into it.
I get abuse at every match I referee and there have been plenty of times that I've come off the pitch thinking that I won't do it again. In the Premier League, where every single decision is highlighted and more often than not, criticised, it's not something you need when dealing with major issues in your personal life as well.

You dog!I took a refereeing course about 7 years ago in Bradford and he was a guest speaker on it. I quit after 1 season of referring junior games it was awful The most abuse I received was from the parents...

Ok, so looks like he'll be moving to Norway to be with his partner, so i'm guessing the marriage broke down because she missed her country and now he'll move with her to work it out.

The lesson is that subjects in the public eye involved in stories like this need to get ahead of the weather with as much truth as possible as early as possible. It's sad that seat sniffing sons of bitches in newspaper offices and the Twitter mob can work together to fabricate hurtful dangerous rubbish so quickly these days but leaving a vacuum in your 'story' does you no favours, even if the fair and reasonable reaction is to stay private.

Don't think there'd be much frenzy if the rumour hadn't surfaced. Feel for the guy. Forever tainted should he return to the fray. And destined to receive canine side-eye for the rest of his days.
He should take up refereering here, genuinely think he could improve the appalling standards in our lower leagues.

Ha, that’s random. The referees in Norway are appalling too, but after games they comment on decisions and not least, apologize to the managers once a wrong decision has been presented on the monitor. It’s a great idea and it’s forgotten instantly, unlike in England where there’s a bit of arrogance tied to the referees. It always has to be remembered that the refs aren’t the stars of the show - they are not the professionals at work like the footballers. Once a referee says that «yeah, it was a clear penalty - but as you can see, my line of sight is blocked completely» then everyone says cool, that’s undertandable.
This Madley seems like an intelligent guy. Emigrating to Norway is never a wrong decision.

He's more than welcome to be a referee in our league. Has to improve though as the level of refs are extremely high in Norway.
Maybe, although the way things are worded leave things unclear to me. Is his wife Norwegian? The only mention I saw of her in an article was that she was called Rachel. Doesn't sound Norwegian on the face of it but could be.
I'd have also thought she'd have still been referred to as his wife rather than partner and the use of that word is making me wonder. Divorce takes a while, and if they're working on the marriage then would they be getting divorced anyway?

That does make more sense, still not much though, why a gagging order? Why not just come out and say he was sacked for posting something offensive on Snapchat? That would be normal. Rather than a cryptic message that could only lead to speculation.

Why would anyone really care? so he shared some moderately offensive image on snapchat. Instead they let the rumour mill go in to action which was far worse. Also doubtful he would actually get straight sacked for that, there are appeals etc etc he could go through. PGMOL are also desperate for referees as well at the moment.
Just look at what happened to Clattenburg when sacked, and he was eventually reinstated. No point in trying to speculate as no real information, when he is in Norway I wonder if we will find out the truth though.
