So I was curious about this... which footballers have tried to make it as politicians? reading about George Weah becoming Liberia's president has piked my interest. I know Shevchenko tried in the ukranian elections a few years ago but failed. What else is there?

EDIT: oh, and wasn't Ronaldinho in some political party as well?

If anyone can remember Jon Parkin, the rather portly striker who made his way around the lower league clubs, you'll be interested to know he just got elected in Blackpool, one of his campaign promises was to 'Make Blackpool Chips Great Again'

Kakhaber Kaladze (Milan defender who featured in the 2003 Champions League final vs. Juventus) was Georgia's Energy Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, and is now the Mayor of Tbilisi:
The post of Energy Minister fell vacant after Minister Kakha Kaladze was named as the ruling Georgian Dream team’s Tbilisi mayoral candidate, meaning he had to leave his ministerial role.

Kvirikashvili said that Eloshvili has been deputy minister since 2012 and has contributed to all projects the Energy Ministry has implemented since then.

Former Energy Minister Kaladze also held the position of Vice Prime Minister. This role has now been given to Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze.

Speaking of Milan, his team-mate Shevchenko is in the Україна – Вперед! (Ukraine – Forward!) political party. So that's Weah, Rivera, Kaladzke and Shevchenko for politicians — on top of having Berlusconi as the owner for over 2 decades.
