Would United have signed or sold anyone if the window closed on 31/08?

We can all agree that it was a crazy decision to close our transfer window before the rest of the world.

But, who would we have signed or sold if it only closed on the 31st of August?

Especially given our poor start to the season.

I would guess at the defender that Jose wanted and possibly pogba and Martial out with 1 or two big replacements.
We would have had more time to shift darmian and Rojo too...

You never can say. Perhaps Ed had already decided to shut shop up and nothing else was gonna change his mind about bulging. I also doubt transfer decisions are made in a fickle manner. I bet you we will not sign anyone in January too. My two cents....

I had the idea that there wasn't really a good plan A and definitely no plan B so I don't think more time would have mattered.

Do you seriously think that they or their agents would have shut up for the last 3 weeks if we couldn’t turn round and say that our window is closed?
What their agents would or not have done is inconsequential, it's about whether Woodward would let either leave and he absolutely would not have.

The window only closes in Spain today, if we're were planning to sell Pogba we could have. But obviously we didn't want to sell him and Barca probably couldn't afford what we would be looking to convince the club to sell.

Judging by the start we have had and how incompetent our CBs look, I think a certain amount of panic would have set in and we'd have made a mega-money deadline day signing for Maguire.

I think yes, but because of the two defeats and the comedy show that Jones and Lindelof put on against Spurs. It was that embarrasing

After this start one defender at least. Maybe even two. But for huge amount of money.
But rojo and one more defender would be sold too.Willian is benched in chelsea so who knows. Maybe even him.
Wrong year for this closing window early debacle

Yeah no chance after our start we wouldn't have bought anyone had we been able to, not sure about outgoings though because I feel we've genuinely found it hard to offload our players due to their sky high wages

The flipside is the Pogba/Barca stuff has probably only been simmering due to our inability to replace him due to our window being closed because had it been open like Barca's I would imagine that story would have got a lot more traction

Have to say one thing I am surprised with is that we havent sold anyone. Dont think Rojo has even made any squads has he? Darmian unlikely to get a look in again now

I think we'd have panic signed Alderweireld and then sold one of the other defenders, most likely Rojo.

After the defensive shambles of our CBs, I think we would have panicked and splashed enormous money on someone. Whether that would have been Alderweireld/Maguire/Boateng I don't know.

I don't see there was a chance in hell we'd have budged on Pogba, though it would have been interesting to have seen Barca's improved offers after that joke of an opening bid.

Elsewhere I think Woody may have shat his pants and had a look down the back of the sofa for some Toby/Slabhead money after these past two games.

He's been injured. Only returned to training around the same time as Dalot.

I think we might have signed a defender and sold Darmian or Rojo. No other incomings or sales.

Closing the transfer window earlier made a lot of sense from a football point of view.
But in regards to transfers, it has put english clubs in a bad negotiating position. Selling clubs had way more leverage at the end of the english transfer window to put pressure on buying PL clubs, since they knew they had 3 weeks to find another buyer in all the other leagues. Clubs could also block their players more easily, since they only have a few weeks of "siege" to defend.
In addition, we know that the last days of a transfer window always generate unexpected moves, players putting increasing pressure on their clubs to force a sale (like Dembele at Celtic), so there would have been opportunities, but who knows if Ed or Jose would have caught one of them.
Also works the other way around, lots of deadweight on the squad who could have been shipped to clubs in panic mode at the end of the window.

Given we only have 3 points I would definitely say yes.

No one in their right mind can say our back line is up to scratch for the biggest sports club in the world.

Not unless Mourinho changed his targets, no.

Us buying nobody was never about a lack of time, that much is obvious.

Yes We would have. Teams panic buy all the time after starting the new season terribly.

Probably yes.

I'd rather we just fecking look at what needs improving and get it done properly than panic buying though.

I think so, too.
Either him or Toby, who was pretty damn good, when he played at OT a few nights ago.

After the Spurs horror show, I doubt Woodward would've had the balls to look Jose in the eye and tell him that our defenders are good enough or better than Toby or Maquire.

When you are trying to save money and penny pinch, panic buying (of anything in life), is quite normal.
I think it is also known as being reactive, rather than pro-active.

Yeah, has the opposite effect and you end up with a plaster over the leak instead of fixing it.

Speak for yourself. I think it was a good decision, as what has actually happened since we closed ours. Zilch.

I am glad it closed early just so I didn't have to listen to those demented fools on Sky droning on about it every minute. In particular that idiot Jim White. Imagine three more weeks of that. No I couldn't either.

If we had a concrete plan in the first place then it wouldnt have mattered when the window closes. Think we just didnt want to spend big money on older players who bring marginal improvements.

Well, nearly all...
Do you think it was wise to allow clubs in other countries to unsettle our players without us being able to replace them?
Also, the shortened time because of a World Cup?

If your window had been open, a fairy might have flown in and left the numbers on your bedside table.
Nothing wrong with a bit of speculation and hindsight. I would’ve DEFINITELY got a top class central defender in myself.

I do agree with you, though, was just being silly, and still a bit frustrated with our lack of signings.
The hindsight thinking only woke my frustration up :)

Ridicolous timing with shortening of the transfer window after a WC, what the feck were they thinking?¿

Who in the EPL has been unsettled and not replaced?

It was ridiculous that previously the window closed after the season had begun. The clubs themselves voted to close it before the season began.

No. As shown by his post-window briefing, Ed Woodward nixed all of Mourinho's transfer targets (either too expensive or too old or not good enough, in his judgement). Early shutting of the window had no effect on us.

Ed has also briefed that he'll never sell Martial, no matter what the manager in charge at the time feels.

Ed Would sell him eyes closed if Zidane said he was rubbish after the way he utilised asensi0.

Ed just knows that certain talents can't be judged by Jose who has a very strict linear type of football that does not always blend with certain players as Jose's style of football does not change no matter which team, no matter which league.

Us fans of Martial see the same way - if a different manager complains about him then we will be happy to see him go. But Jose  he is unhappy with football, his squad, his media & everything he messes around with yet he expects to come out of it clean
