How close is Aguero to Henry/Shearer?

I know Sergio gets plenty of praise, but I rarely see him discussed as the greatest ever PL striker. I’m not saying he is, but surely he is well in the argument now?

Henry will always be number one for me. Incredible player and he had it all. Aguero is probably in the top five though.

Not sure he’s better than Shearer as a goal scorer.

Shearer was the ultimate finisher, Henry was the ultimate all round attacking player. Aguero is closer to Shearer I think than to Henry because he seems a natural finisher, no way he has the all round ability peak Henry had.

Well he's not close to Henry at all IMO.

One of the greatest strikers in the history of the PL sure, but has no claim for being the greatest for me.

Imho its the following order of premier league strikers.

Henry
Shearer
Kun
Rooney

For me Henry is further ahead of Shearer than Shearer is Aguero and Rooney. Had Aguero the same number of games as Shearer he's probably be above him imho. Rooney is somewhat tarnished by his later years but the guy was world class until his late 20's.

Great minds think alike.

I don’t think he’s done enough to go on par, or above Henry. Certainly he is the in the best strikers that have ever played in the prem, though

Fair. That said, if Ronaldo is often in the conversation of best ever PL player, then I’d have Suarez in any striker list, above Rooney for me. I also think Persie, while he was fit, was well in the argument too.

Henry is number one. Aguero is number two.

Shearer was brilliant but he played so many games to get to his number.

He has the numbers going for him. But it's not typical for him to really control a game in a way that Shearer or Henry have done time and again. That said, Aguero is brilliant and should be in the conversation. Just doesn't come out on top is all

Suarez would be close. I personally wouldn't put Ronnie as best PL players of all time as much as one of the best players of all time who happened to spend some time in the PL. Someone like Giggs has offered a lot more to the PL imho.
Even while he was in the league Aguero had a better goals to game, goals per minute ratio than Suarez, If I had to include him on his short time I'd put him in somewhere between Kun and Rooney.

The only player to come close to Henry's peak in terms of all round performance was Suarez in 13/14. He was simply insane then.

Rooney and Henry were alround strikers so it depends what you're looking for, it's not as if Rooney didn't get you goals and I would say a prime Rooney would keep Kun out of a Pep side due to how he could play across the frontline.
He was like a cross between Aguero and a better version of Jesus.

Henry is easily number 1. Have a feeling some say it's Shearer as he's English but when push comes to shove Henry is the greatest forward this league has ever seen.

Its hard to realize just how good Shearer was before his injuries. He was still very good, but before that he was lightning quick as well

he was indeed, but he fell off a cliff about age 28 which is why I'd put him below Kun. Aguero is 30 and still as consistent as when he's always been, Rooney was practically finished at that age. He also after his knee operation for the first time in 4 or 5 years has the explosive Aguero pace back, which is why he's playing no.10 today behind Jesus. Again though I'd say the gap between Rooney, Shearer and Kun is tight and they are much closer to each other than anyone is to Henry.

Kane will surely have his say in this too. Probably by the end of the season.

Ronaldo’s PL best is probably the best the PL has ever seen, so PL level alone, I would have him in there. He was the best PL player for a spell here, and the best PL player ever, for a spell here. The only PL player to win the World Player of the Year. Micheal Owen won Euro Player of the Year once at Liverpool but was obviously never in that same conversation.

Maybe, but Rooney started so young that he already had a fantastic 10/11 years when he hit his decline at 28.
Its really hard to hold longevity against him, especially when young Rooney was the best version of Rooney.
His and Henry numbers are ridiculous when you consider how much less time they spent in the box between them.

Kane will surpass all of them by the time he retires.

And if people want to use the well what has he won argument...even if he isn't part of a team that cleans up domestically etc noone can argue about his goalscoring record.

In fact, I'd argue his repertoire of finishes so far in his career are better than any of the strikers listed. I think only Shearer can say he scores as many different types of goals as Kane does.

He's in the argument for best PL striker, he just doesn't win that argument. I'd have Henry as the clear best but Aguero would be somewhere in the group just beneath.

I think it’s the opposite - longevity is a plus for Rooney. At his very best, I’m not sure if he was unanimously the best in the league. I think his best was the year after Ronaldo left, he was excellent, but I don’t remember if he was the top scorer in the league or voted PL player of the year that year.

I think when looking at it more holistically, he was always in and around the best for a fair number of years, and that helps him more than simply looking at his top level, which I think was bettered by a few.

I think if he was a little less injury prone he would be there bu for me Shearer and then Henry. I have to also mention Lampard, considering he is a midfielder he was an amazing goal scorer.

Lampard scored quite a few penalties to be fair, which is another plus for Aguero I think. He has a ridiculous goals to games record as it is, and as far as I recall, Yaya Toure was always City’s penalty taker too. Aguero’s record would be even more impressive if you added say, 15 penalties.

England simply had better players playing in the EPL back then, if Utd did well then Ronaldo got the accolades and if we didn't do well then it went to the world class players from the champions.
Winning seemed to mean more back then, now you can stat pad and receive the same level of acclaim without the success.

Henry remains #1 for me, lot of fans from newer generation don't quite realize what a complete attacking machine he was. I used to champion Ruud being better than him constantly citing his record when he was here, but deep down I always knew Henry was a level or two above him. It's a travesty he never won Ballon d'Or/FIFA POTY when he was in PL.

Aguero numbers are phenomenal though, we'll have to place him in Top 3 by the time he's done here.

Kane will surpass all of them by the time he retires.

Another thread which has nothing to do with Spurs and Kane but brought into it anyway.

While you're at it, let me break it down in very simple terms to you. Henry just had far more natural ability than Kane, he was simply a better player. Kane will always be compared to Shearer rather than likes of Henry and Ronaldo when he finishes.

If you think his finishes are better than the strikers listed then I'm afraid you haven't really watched a lot of them.

His inability to replicate form in the CL holds him back.

Still easily an all time elite PL striker.

I think nostalgia often takes over peoples judgement with these kind of threads. I think he is right up there with Henry & Shearer. He has the best goals/games ratio in Premier League history.

Obviously it's hard to fully judge, as Henry & Aguero played in far stronger teams than Shearer.

Henry's biggest asset is he controlled the game, provided countless assists and scored goals. He has that over everyone else he is compared to.

Shearer is being downplayed in here, probably because his career had 3 different stages and if you only caught the last two, you've no frame of reference for what he was before injuries forced him to change his game for those two other stages. Before them, he was fast, mobile and used his cunning in a different way to how he did when he became more static and a typical classic centre-forward.

It's harder to separate them than is being stated as if you wanted a proper #9 in your team, you don't pick Henry, but if you want a roaming forward, you don't pick Shearer. In fact, they could be paired together they were so different in their approach play.

1. Henry/Shearer
3. Van Nistlerooy
4. Aguero
5. Up for grabs.

Which year you reckon he should have won?
He should have won in 2004.

As good as Ronaldinho and Shevchenko were, that year was all about Henry. He should have won one of the Ballon d'Or or World footballer of the year.

Judging from most of his posts, I'd be surprised if he watches any football outside of Spurs let alone games from 15-20 years ago.

Lampard scores 32 penalties, yeah it’s double Agureo’s but still, Lampard is a legend of the a PL.
