Lukaku: We have been working on quick passing in last couple of weeks

Post match Lukaku said "The people will now see a different side of us. Everything we have been working on the last couple of weeks is coming now. Quick passing, runs in behind, lot of actions and lot of chances"

Which was very good to see. Even against Spurs we played well before they scored first goal and the 5 mins of madness. Today it was very obvious that we moved the ball very quickly and played with high intensity.

Think if we play with same intensity then most teams in the league just can't handle it. Hopefully we will stick to this, instead of just short term experiment.

In your closet, in your head!
Jose bemoaned our lack of quick passing as far back as last season's match against Brighton (after the Sevilla debacle). Very encouraging to hear that we've been seriously working on it now and we're starting to see some results. Perhaps the new coaching setup has made a difference? In any case if this continues then I'm blaming all our shit football of the past 2 seasons on Rui Faria :smirk:

Its been clear as day. Brighton aside its obvious that although still a work in progress we are trying to play faster and more on the front foot. Which begs the question about what exactly people want. If it fails then ask questions but give the season a couple of months

Lot of our moves seems to click. Second goal involving layoff to shaw comes to mind quickly. Wonder how much McKenna and Carrick have played their hand for this to happen?

It was great to see how many times Lukaku made it beyond their defense even when down a man . And pogba not dilly dallying all day on the ball.

Only our defenders look like they don't know what to do w the ball (CBs). Like Lindelof ambling about , not driving fwd into the space he had then launching a pass way into stands

It is good to hear.

But, you would think that's what we would be doing anyway every day?!

Seems like. Good to see Jose allowing external coaches to influence his style of play. That was one of the major complaint against him.

Agree. SAF did that previously wth Quieroz then Phelan to a great success. Faria leaving and adding McKenna to boost new ideas into training sessions was a step forward.

Exactly! What have we been doing for all these years in training?!
That's why I said it's mostly McKenna work. Managers usually leave the organization of training sessions to their assistant coaches. Said multiple times the effect of new stuff will show on training sessions which will reflect on movement in final third. May be Faria was getting too dull with his work and we needed to boost new energy and fresh ideas in training. SAF did that with Quieroz then Phelan and it helped us a lot. He talked previously how Phelan was nearly in charge of everything in his last days.

Actually remembering this make you feel how Moyes was idiotic getting rid of this stuff and bringing his aveage one from Everton with Phill and Giggs. Should have kept Phelan to help him but he was out of his depth.

True. I remember Van Persie crediting Meulesteen for so many of our goals in the 12-13 season. These guys play such an underrated role in the team. Let's just hope that Jose doesn't go back to his old style incase we suffer a few bad results.

Plus people completely discarded his contribution after he failed at Fulham which was Unfair IMO because the role of a manager is completely different to role of a coach. Also, things that work at bigger club will not work well at club with limited resources. I'm think even lord Pep will get relegated with the likes of Bournemouth.

Indeed. And most folks here that watched McKennas youth sides were full of praise for his style so hopefully it is a continuing trend in games

I noticed this against Tottenham and we were pressing the life out of them. The pundit buggers said that all we were doing were running too hard and we would gas out. First half, we played really well against Spurs and if not for Lukaku's misses, we'd be ahead.

Second half our defence let us down. That's all it was. There's a marked difference in the way we play now. High Press. One touch movement and overall zeal to move the full backs forward. Luke Shaw is doing this PERFECTLY. The extra man running in from defence is doing anumber on the opposition.

We're going in the right direction. We went to Burnley and did what United are supposed to do. Absolutely dominate. About time normal business resumed.

Not just the passing. Look at how many bodies were in the box(not a video :D). Looked to have clearly worked upon in training .

The team is working on things every week behind the scenes and things can only get better from here from that point of view on our quick passing and stuff. So many fickle United fans out there saying that Jose had lost the dressing room using the Brighton game as a key example when it was just 1 game as well. I bet some of them are suddenly saying we'll win the league.

Crucial to get a run going from here. The Watford game will be tricky yet again but if we can win that then there is a good opportunity to get a good run going up until we face Chelsea and Juventus. Chelsea away is historically (last 15 years at least) our hardest fixture of the season - its very difficult to get a win over there. Juventus is at OT but they are a good team, and coming off the Chelsea game (ONLY 3 DAYS EARLIER!) it will be quite a challenge.

Didn't Jose mention this before the start of the season that they had been working on new tactics but it will take some time to get them to show since there were a whole heap of players on leave after the World Cup? Something about this isn't football manager or some sort?

The international break has probably come at the wrong time for us as it looked like the team was starting to settle into the new tactics.

Better late than never. If this is Carrick's and McKenna's influence, let's hope Mourinho keeps listening to them even after losses.

Though you'd think a "world class manager" like Mourinho, working at one of the world's biggest clubs, would have been working on quick passing etc from the start of season 1...

People are really trying to twist this into some sort of admission that we didn't work on patterns and passing before.

If you look at some of the patterns Smalling spoke about, they are similar to ones we used last year. Lukaku still peels to the back post for the Sanchez dink, Lingard still arrives at the edge of the box working off the presence of Lukaku. Lingard didn’t just magically score more goals last year. Shaw offers something different and of course Matic was not the deepest midfielder yesterday.

We're talking about patterns It's football.
You win the game. Physical battle. That game yesterday was a fight.

You have to win the fight. Where's Roy Keane..

Are we arsenal or are we noerthen.

I remember the time that someone stuck my finger out. Headbutted him back.
Walked off the pitch as friends.

Quite eloquent from Mike and Rom there. Fellaini whispering like he’s having phone sex.

Hopefully more of this movement they are talking about. Yesterday was a real good performance with many chances. Even if Burnley are a bit shit we were up for it and delivered.

There is a big difference in how we played against Burnley, Spurs and before that, last season. There is intensity in the game, passing is quick and we are pressing higher up the pitch.

We can get better at things with time, of course. There seems to be a myth on here that we didn’t work on patterns of play though. I dont think Jose signs a player like Fred without a plan on how to further improve the team gradually. He was upset with the pre season because he could not work on his plans with the players that will actually be playing.

the best way for Mourinho to save his job is to go for it tactically and free up the players. You'd have thought fast passing and movement would be lesson number 1 for any attacking side

it will be a fun year if nothing else

I noted the point after the game and I'm happy to hear it. But we should have been doing it for years.

How can you dismiss it as a myth when Jose's ex players in Chelsea and Real Madrid have said otherwise?

There’s definitely a huge difference and it’s the main reason I actually felt weirdly positive after the Spurs result despite the humiliating scoreline

Having Luke Shaw playing out of his skin helps a fair bit.

Before both goals there were a lot of quick passes and interchanges plus lots of bodies in and around the box.
