Probably this isn't in the news in the english speaking world, but the guy who is leading the polls, Jair Bolsonaro, was stabbed a couple of days ago. Nothing too serious, he will recover in a few days and analysts say this will give him a boost in the polls.

I just felt like sharing some of the things this guy said and defended:

- He'd rather have his sons die than being gay
- Parents of gay boys should "beat the gayness" out of them
- After 4 sons he had a daughter, which he described as a moment of weakness
- His kids were raised not to feel attracted to black women
- Ugly women don't deserve to be raped
- Torture and death penalty should be legal
- One of the problems of the brazilian military dictatorship was torturing instead of killing, like in Pinochet's Chile
- Those convicted of corruption should be executed by fire squad
- Children raised by gay couples, which he will try to outlaw, become gay or prostitutes
- He was already fined for racist (black slaves were too expensive because black people don't work) and homophobic (if a decent man sees to man kissing in the street he should beat them) comments and for inciting to violence
- He is against equal pay because women can get pregnant
- The "miserable", as he calls the poor, should be encouraged to use sterilization

So yeah, this guy is leading the polls. Good luck Brazil...

Crikey. Has a Brazilian president ever not been charged with corruption down the line? Such an amazing country, but just seems to lurch from one scandal to another.

Yes, he seems to hang around people from his party.

Well, ironically the last president Dilma Rousseff, the one who was impeached, was not charged with any corruption charges.

But that quote about corruption came while talking about Fernando Cardoso, a former president, who Bolsonaro reckons should have been executed for his crimes.

I heard he is like trump, but more witty and sarcastic. That true?
Yeah he actually is quite well spoken. But unlike Trump he seems to actually believe in what he says, it's not just to get votes.

Thought she had been charged tbh. Seem to remember crazy stat about two thirds of the committee investigating her having been done for fraud themselves, or something like that.

I think she was charged by something 5 years ago or so, but was dismissed. Lula, who was her mentor was the one charged and convicted, so the parliament, controlled by the opposition, took the chance to accuse the whole party and impeach her. Most of the MP's were themselves involved with corruption and a great number have been charged and convicted since then.

Even the current president wasn't charged yet just because he has parliamentary protection.

It's a crazy situation, it must be so frustrating being a regular citizen in a country like that.

Its important to understand the Brazilian political system, because in reality it operates quite different to other presidential systems, especially the one in the USA, that is most well known.
Its not a 2-party system, but currently there are 25 of them. The majority of those parties have no distinct program or coherent ideology. Its horse-trading, pork barelling, vehicles for individuals and oportunism². Additionally Brazil is a federalist country which adds to the chaos. The Brazilian president is both quite strong and quite weak ("coalition presidentialism"). He has a lot of tools to navigate this environment to get things done, but it depends a lot on his personal connections, powerbase and skills if he is able to be succesful. It also fosters an extreme sense of pragmatism. FHC and Lula were pretty good at this game (incl. all the corruption it entails), Dilma and Temer struggled with different aspects quite a bit.
Jair Bolsonaro is pretty horrible and in my opinion far worse than Trump. He is open in his admiration for the former military dictatorship, a genuine right-wing extremist, an extreme nationalist and overall just a vile individual. The one upside about Trump is that he is as thick as they come, which makes him less capable to efficiently head the government (and to implement his agenda). Bolsonaro is a lot more capable and calculated. That said he was a fringe figure in Brazilian politics and he doesn't have a strong power-base. The PSL, the party that he more or less hijacked, have currently only a couple of MPs and imo no state governor. If he gets elected, it remains to be seen if he has the necessary skill-set and pragmatism to get anything done. That said Brazil needs neither a right-wing extremist nor a lame duck. Bolsonaro appointed paulo guedes as his economic advisor, who is a mainstream orthodox economist with a fairly good reputation. Thats more or less his hedge against any accusation that he'll support politics that would alienate international investors (after all his personal preferences seems to be much more alligned with nationalistic economic policies; somewhat related to how Lula handled this in 2002 with his "carta ao povo brasileiro").
I don't follow the drama in too much detail, so I don't know which parties are going to form coalitions.

here is my short take of the economic situation: https://www.redcafe.net/threads/the-economics-thread.433270/page-5#post-23040780

Some brazilian columnists have written exactly that.

Just heard him say from the hospital bed that there's no place for violence. Then then played a clip from the day before the stabbing of him holding a machine gun and saying "that's how you deal with petistas". Petistas are the major left wing party.
