Didier Deschamps : Paul Pogba is misunderstood

France coach Didier Deschamps has leapt to the defence of his World Cup "leader" Paul Pogba, describing him as a team player who has been misunderstood by some fans and the media.

Deschamps was the guest of honour at the Fifa Football Conference in London, where more than 300 international coaches, including England's Gareth Southgate and Wales boss Ryan Giggs, gathered on Sunday to discuss lessons learned from this summer's World Cup.

Asked how he got more out of Pogba in Russia than Jose Mourinho is managing to at Manchester United, the 49-year-old French said: "I think the rest of the world, and certainly in France, has an image of Paul Pogba that doesn't really reflect who he is.

He's been in the national team since 2013 and he's always thought about the collective. There's this idea that he's a bit individualistic and only thinks about himself but that's not the case at all. I think that's one thing that needs to be said.

"Another is that he arrived at the World Cup really prepared and he took on the mantle of leadership, on and off the pitch. He became a bit of a spokesman for the team and he can do that because he's a good speaker.

"I've spoken to him about his relationship with the media and I think he's been unfairly criticised in the past. That's why there has been this aggressive vibe and he's had this strained relationship.

"But criticism is part of the job and I think you learn to take that on board as you get more experienced. That's what's happened with him and I think he's gained some respect. He joined us ready to become a world champion and he took the whole squad with him."

Maybe Paul hopes that Deschamps succeeds Jose.

When you look at his career outside of United, his growth his impressive whether it be from a kid signing for a Juventus to becoming a star performer but for the dominant Serie A club, or his progression within the French National Team from a huge but sometimes frustrating talent to a leader and big influence in a WC winning team.

It's United where he seems to struggle to really fulfill his potential. I suppose it isn't surprising that the weakest team/collective is where his weaknesses get exposed more. But one does wonder how much is to do with him needing to improve, or flaws within our own football.

Oh, seeing how people are just loving Mourinho's conservative style, they'll just be leaping in joy with Deschamps'. That would be a pretty hilarious succession, especially if Zidane then takes over the French NT.

I like Pogba very talented but he acts and plays like a fecking child

For every one nice touch or cross-field pass there are a several under-hit/over-hit passes

He rarely plays an early pass and just dillies and dallies on the ball

The type of character and player Fergie wouldnt be bothered with

He hasn't earnt the hero worshipping he gets by some IMO.

There's a reason why Valencia is first choice captain

And why is that? He doesn't play like a captain and he can't even speak English.

Losing to Comeback Winning!
Deschamps is commenting on Pogba's image portrayed by the media, as individualistic and selfish, sort of, is misunderstood.

I don't know, but is that how it is? especially in France?

Pogba is certainly taking on more leadership roles off pitch, and taking more responsibility on the pitch. He always is the team mood maker, friendly with team mates, and professional with manager and coaches. Have been a team player all along.

He is a top professional on and off the pitch. The type of no-nonsense person any manager in any profession looks to have..the type who (compared to Pogba) you would happily trust getting dug in trench with..

I like Pogba and I think he will mature but atm he behaves and plays like a fecking child.

Let's be honest out of this current bunch knowing how Fergie works he would've made Valencia Captain too

What drugs have you been mixing?

Had England won the World Cup, even the returning pundits who worked in Moscow would have received a hero's welcom but Pogba's not worth it, despite leading his NT to win the World Cup, rallying his team-mates, scoring in the final and being consistently brilliant throughout the tournament. He's getting the "hero worship" because he's an hero for a lot of people in France, including many migrant kids hoping they could do what Pogba has done. Childish indeed. If you choose to judge him by anything else, then it's your problem.

He was also important for Juve at a very young age, so maybe, just maybe not being as consistent or United has something to do with us? But nah...

Should he be so open with the media? Personally I don't think he should. Saying he plays and acts childish is just stupid.

I guess this thread is about Paul’s relationship with the media - not his performances or otherwise.

So in this respect it’s quite simple, the media want to write stuff about Pogba because it sells/gets clicks- so their very incentive is to invoke a comment that is or can be misconstrued as controversial.

The question for me is does he get media training or guidance or restrictions from the club? Or is it totally his and his agents prerogative to talk to the media - because on face value your always getting articles with Pogba says this, Pogba days that. You rarely get anything with quotes from Herrera, Smalling, Mata and the like.

Let's hope he will stay beyond Mourinho, we could easily see him to win baloon d'or if everything clicks for him and change of style of paly of the team will make him bloom I am sure.. It is all too negative under the Portuguese

I don't think he'll ever be Balon Dor material. But he should be among the top 10 footballers in the world.

Its you who likely doesn't watch often, for all his flaws in this dysfunctional team he has still comfortably been the best outfield player during his time here. Which was extremely evident lasts season when he got injured and we looked like utter shite, the same happened the season before.

Its also very apparent that whenever he has an off game, we look like utter shite too, this part really highlights how dependant we are on him as a player.
