What is it with our home matches?

A rather disturbing trend that I am seeing this year is that we are doing much better away than at home. We seem unsure of ourselves at OT. What would be the reason for that?

Teams just aren't as scared of us anymore. When Derby and Wolves come over and imprint their style on the game while we sit back and hope we can keep a 1-0 lead, something's gone wrong.

I don't think we've played that well for any of our home games, except maybe the first half against Spurs which resulted in nothing anyway.

Perhaps the players feel a lot of pressure to please the home crowd.

Less pressure away I feel, and our opposition approach the matches differently. Every team knows exactly how to frustrate us and get a result at OT these days.

Wasn't our home record last season pretty fecking excellent? Whatever the problem is, it might be too early to draw any conclusions.

EDIT: Yeah, just checked. Our record at home last season P18 W15 D2 L2. City's record was P18 W16 D2 L1. Almost identical.

Mourinho has instilled the underdog mentality in the team. Away from home everyone knows that the home side needs to take the mantle and we thrive in such conditions because we are setup to take advantage of mistakes.

I don't know, but even since Fergie retired and Old Trafford has become one of the most boring stadiums to view in the league for me, toe to toe with the Bridge atmosphere. Nothing related to fans though. Something there looks extremely boring. Results are a big part for sure.

Yet none of this happened last season. Why's that then?
I think this started to happen at the tail end of last season. We weren't really impressive in any game during that period.

Edit: Even sevilla outplayed us at home

Maybe. It’s possible this is a recent trend. Like I said in my first post in the thread, too few games to be certain. Not when our home record in the league over the course of last season was so impressive.

Not sure if it has very much to do with our matches being at home or away. Our performances have just been extremely unstable in general. Our only away win against a decent team was at Watford, where we only played well for 15min and spent the rest of the match hanging on.

I don't think it's really about home or away, we're just not great full stop.

We won against Burnley, but that's self explanatory.
Our other away league win was against Watford, who despite their great start, aren't a great footballing side and we almost lost it at the end if it wasn't for Dave's save.

We might have won away at Young Boys but weren't great until we scored and they probably don't even pose as great of a challenge as midtable Prem teams. Finally, we lost to Brighton away.

This, every game it's like a bag of Revels, you never know which United will turn up and there are also games where the performance over 90 minutes can be a bit of everything. I can't recall the last time I watched a big United game where beforehand I actually thought United would win, rather than just hoping for the best.
I just hate the way United go into games against other top teams with the main aim of blocking out the other side and nicking a victory. Games against Chelsea, for example, where Mourinho's main aim is to neutralise Hazard by any means necessary. Good defending is obviously a big requirement in any great team but surely there is a way to combine it with some creative and attacking prowess.
The shameful performances in big games, the home defeat against Sevilla and the FA Cup Final last season being two recent examples of the timid and soulless football United are currently playing.

Our home support is shite basically and our home games feel like away games. You can pretty much always hear the away fans more than the home ones.

I have been surprised by this for last couple of years at least

Derby County was the first match that I'd predicted us to win all season :smirk:

Let's not kid ourselves, we aren't exactly great away from home. Got schooled by Brighton. Needed DDG to save our asses in the final seconds vs Watford. Young Boys and Burnley were solid performances but one was against CL debutants whilst the other was quite clearly suffering from EL hangover.

One thing I will say is that the approach of smaller teams is different home vs away. Away from home they'll generally sit back, soak it up and mostly play on the counter even when they're a goal down. They can't play like that at home though because they'd get slaughtered by the fans/media (see Newcastle vs Chelsea some weeks ago). So for incompetent attacking lines like ours it's probably easier doubling the lead by exploiting room away than by breaking down buses at home.

Sometimes it seems as though the players are too pampered at Old Trafford, lots of tourist fans politely applauding and taking pics, waiting for the players before and after the game no matter how abysmal the performance, most players have executive boxes or can be provided with them for their sycophantic entourage. They fear Mourinho, but probably know he's under more immediately pressure than them, so it's a quick bollocking then back to the mansion/supermodel.

In contrast away games are mostly about the football, boring journey, time to focus, away team dressing room with just the core staff for company and limited features, less distractions and the best away support in the league, not to mention a long journey home with your team mates and coaches can't be fun if you've had a stinker.

Maybe the away team is thinking they need to perform better because they're at OT and end up doing us in.

Weird how this can change from season to season under the same manager.

Under Moyes we had one of the best away records in the league but were terrible at home. Mental pressure of being expected to perform?

Yup, we're shit regardless of whether we're playing home or away.
