I think the interesting thing about the Chinese is they’re sophisticated and they’re only interested in money & keeping China together (rather than destabilizing Western democracies).

China’s neighbours: Russia, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Bangeldesh, India, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Mongolia are hardly Western democracies (or even pro Chinese). But don’t let a few facts get in your way.

Another point comes to mind, I wonder how Japan & Korea got to be industrial power houses, mmmmmm...

I think the point I want to make is that I think the West would be much better off with Chinese technology than with Russian gas or Saudi oil for example.

The amount of technology used around the world, that's been produced in China is staggering. I have no doubt in my mind the Chinese government use this for nefarious causes.

My company is deploying Lenovo's left right and centre.
Our government takes it one further and makes sure the actual basestations are Huawei. That way the Chinese won't have to bother with individual phones.

I think the Chinese use it as industrial espionage. The Chinese love money, they don’t give a crap about the rest.

New silk road, soft colonization of Africa and expansive politics in the South China sea. One day we'll wake up and find China the dominant superpower. They play Go while we play Chess. Trump on the other hand plays Ludo.

Trump plays Tetris and Chess is from China. But yes, China is well on its way to becoming the dominant super power.

Is China a threat? Well, yes & no. Obviously China’s human rights record is appalling and there is no excuse for industrial espionage. But ultimately China’s goal is to stop the country falling apart and in to chaos (you have to realize than China exists out of different regions with different cultures and identities) as well as bringing living standards on a par with the West (you have realize that it wasn’t long ago that China was still suffering famines) which is one hell of a challenge considering the size of its population.

Trump plays pocket tennis and Chess originated in India and then got brought to Persia, Go on the other hand is Chinese. And yes, China will dominate within 10-15 years. Just in my business I've seen them go from nothing players to their damn CNPC and it's subsidiaries popping up everywhere.

Most historians will tell you that chess originated from Xiangqi and I never said that Go isn’t Chinese.

I'd love to have been a fly on the wall at these companies while they were finding this stuff out.

What's the main benefit? Are they finding out what moves these companies are making so they can have a headstart on one-upping and grow the Chinese economy? Or am I way off?

The earliest predecessor of the game probably originated in India, before the 6th century AD; a minority of historians believe the game originated in China. From India, the game spread to Persia. When the Arabs conquered Persia, chess was taken up by the Muslim world and subsequently spread to Southern Europe.

I think it’s less sinister than is often made out (but maybe I’m being naive), but basically they are stealing intellectual property from foreign companies to advance their economy. Lots of companies from the Far East use this strategy. For example, Samsung are well known for purchasing foreign companies, ‘stealing’ the intellectual property and then selling the company off again. The difference is that in China the companies are state owned.

I remember reading somewhere that about $3.5tn worth of asset already left China in the last decade or so.

Are the Chinese trying to get their fingers on as many pies as possible? Yes. Are they going to be the dominant superpower economically, militarily and culturally? Very debatable, and I’m saying that as a huge admirer of Chinese history and culture.

One child policy -> heavily aging population in the next few decades -> reduced workforce, shit social safety net -> higher mortality rate, failed population distribution (ghost cities) -> waste of money and continual drain to maintain.

Add to that the competing, cheaper labour markets in SEA, India, their internal unrest with territories like Tibet, Xinjiang, potential dissatisfaction from the younger generations regarding the resurgence of Confucianism/traditional hierarchy vs liberal order/interaction with outside world (the West).

It’s not as rosy as it looks. In fact, if India sorts their shit out, they have more of a chance to be dominant economically.

This is going off topic, but problems will the one child policy (over now) cause going forward? They were still going to have the ageing population to support in the future.. The reduced workforce might not be as much of a problem in 20-30 years when a lot of the lowest tier jobs will be automated.
