Or making it more concrete:
Imagine you were Sarri or Poch and you had the option of buying one of these 2 players, which one would you go for?
Note: Sterling you could get for 90m and Rashford 65m

I'd take Rashford BTW!

Every-time Sterling played centrally at the tip of a diamond in midfield, he's looked unstoppable. Rashford is still only 20 but Sterling is really good and better value for the buck right now.

He was sensational for us in that role latter half of 13/14. He became the driving force in our 11 game run.

Sterling has better movement so gets in more goal scoring positions
Rashford has more of an X-Factor about him and has a higher potential
Neither are particularly good finishers

It's tough but I'd go Rashford, if he reaches his potential he'll be a lot better than Sterling

Sterling... he's a very, very good footballer and a more sure thing.

Rashford has the potential to match or even surpass him, but that isn't a given.

Jesus Christ. How is that even a question?

Sterling has had two seasons of football that Rashfprd will probably never top.

I don't think Sterling has peaked yet.

I love our player. I hate Sterling with a passion.

But you could make that equation £150m vs £50m and Sterling still wins.

Sterling has worked his tail off to maximise his raw talent. He's had dips, but every facet of his game has improved in the last 3-4 years. Rashford... lacks something. He should be making himself undeniable to Jose. He's not even close.

Could this be new Rashford vs Mbappe thread?
I dont think Rashford has bigger potential than Sterling. Even Sterling could still improve his game. None is a sure thing.

Sterling is the much better footballer at this moment in time. He’s naturally very gifted and technically a much superior player in terms of touch and close control. Better passer as well.

His weakest area is his finishing and even that is leagues ahead of Rashford in domestic football at the moment. If you look at the last minute winners he was pulling off for City or some of the goals he has already scored this season - Rashford hasn’t shown the same quality.

Rashford has the potential in some respects to be the much more ‘lethal’ player in front of goal - better shot technique, more explosive and better runs off the ball in the final third.

You’d be mad to pick Rashford over Sterling at this moment in time though - Sterling at his very worst still looks like an elite top 4 footballer but Rashford when it’s not going his way looks relegation level. He really needs to work on his bottom level and polish his game.

Sterling by a mile, there is no contest currently.

Maybe in a few seasons it could be re-visited though, but as it stands only the most biased United fan would pick Rashford.

I'd be thrilled if Rashford could even reach Sterling's current level, never mind surpassing him.

Sterling is the more effective player so i'd take him. Not really a contest right now.

Rashford needs more time and a different environment to understand his potential

Rashford has one decent game against Spain and now we want to compare him to one of the top 5 RWs in the world. He has a lot of basics to improve on before he reaches Sterling level. Rashford is not a sure thing. Mbappe against Germany was a sight to see. Not only does he have the basics but his intelligence is sublime. The way he ran past Hummells and had awareness to pass infield and continue his run and put a cross in. When Rashford stops the selfishness and arrogance then he might just about reach Sterling level.

I agree Sterling would be the safest option even with the bigger price tag. However, myself being a gambler, I would go for Rashford.
Reasons: I'm convinced we are not getting his full potential at utd and there is a lot more there than we are seeing. Which would, of course, narrow it down to the people looking after him. It would be realistic to say that Sterling has improved a lot under Pep's man to man management. Rashford had already shown what he was capable of when he burst onto the scene under LVG. IMO Jose with his onus on defensive qualities has stifled his development! Under Pep, for example I think we'd see another Rashford than we are seeing today.
Of course I don't have facts and it's only what I believe, and yes I'm taking the liberty to have a dig at our manager. That said we have seen traces of a very gifted footballer we have on our hands, which was there to be seen in his latest performance for his country. No problem with decision making there! And no I'm not building my judgement on one game!
So in answer to the OP, I'd go for the 20 yr old Rashford and turn him into the player he should be!
If I was Sarri or Poch that is!

If i was Sari I would go for Rashford as Morata has not worked out as planned and although Giroud has been good for them hes 32

If I was Poch Id go for stirling as I already have Kane up top and stirling would be an upgrade on Moura / lamella

You'll hate me for saying it, but Rashford will likely end up at a West Ham/Everton, in my opinion. He'll do well to have half the career Sterling has had so far.

Is this even a question? I'd take Richarlison ahead of Rashford let alone Sterling.

At this point it's easy answer. Sterling as he is playing well week in week out.

Saying that Sterling is 3 years older than Rashford and also playing under the best manager for wingers. It's also good to compare their respective careers when they were 20.

When both were 20, Rashford's productivity is better in league and Europe (both played in Europa and CL).

This might sound harsh but posts like these are just nonsense.

Also one more thread which shows why it's ridiculous to write off a young player. (Sterling few years back)

in 2016-17, Sterling contributed to 13 goals in league and 5 in CL, playing around 3100 mins.
Rashford last season contributed to 12 league goals and 4 in CL playing around 2100 mins

Both contributed so almost same number of goals with Rashford playing around 1000 mins less, which itself shows we have a good talent whose contribution is good enough for a young player.

Probably is, honestly  Way I see it though is that Sterling was constantly getting gametime in his favoured position with attacking teams that suited his style, thus helping his development. Is Rashford getting that? If he were, I'd back him, but right now? I just think that being played the way he's being played, in a team that's pragmatic instead of pro-active... It's not the best way to nurture an up & coming attacking talent.

Which is why I feel he'll fail at the very top level, or maybe he'll just peak later than most.

Isn't Sterlings favoured position in behind the striker?
I still can't see why fans see Rashford as a striker, he even played wide in our youth sides.
First impressions and all that I suppose..

He's much more suited to the winger role than playing #10, but maybe he will move into the hole when Silva finally retires. Only time will tell on that.

Probably is just a first impression thing, really.

Not entirely sure what you mean by half the career Sterling has had so far?

Sterling so far as two medals (PL and League Cup)
Rashford has won the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League so he's ahead on medals (albeit likely to be overtaken here this season)

Sterling's best goal scoring season was last season with 23
Rashford's best goal scoring season was also last season albeit 10 goals off with 13

Sterling has had 6 full seasons thus far
Rashford has had 2 and a bit

Sterling is 3 years older (24 in December, Rashford is 21 this month)

If Danny Welbeck can get a move from United to Arsenal then Rashford would definitely move to someone better than West Ham or Liverpool

Like all our attacking players they're playing for the wrong manager, but that'll change in the next 12 months

Jose isn't SAF, he won't be around here forever. He won't even last this season. Apart from that, there is a tendency to get carried away with recent form and write off everything they did in the past.

For example last season,

In CL
Came on as a sub and scored 3rd goal vs CSKA away
Scored our only goal in 1-0 win against Benfica away (GK error)
Assisted second goal vs Benfica at home in 2-0 win
Scored winner against CSKA at home in 2-1 win
Assited our only goal vs Sevilla from Corner

In league
Assisted first goal vs West Ham in 4-0 win
Scored first goal vs Leicester in 2-0 win
Scored equaliser vs Stoke to make it 1-1. (it was comical goal though)
Assisted first and third goal vs Palace in 4-0 win
Scored our only goal vs Huddersfield in 2-1 loss
Assisted third goal to make it 3-1 vs Newcastle
Scored equaliser vs City to make it 1-1
Assisted first goal vs West Brom in 2-1 win
Scored 2 goals vs Liverpool in 2-1 win
Scored only goal against Watford in a 1-0 win

Apart from Liverpool, Watford, Sevilla everything happened in the first half of the season when Martial and Rashford played alternate games as left wingers. Then we signed Sanchez and both Rashford's and Martial's form went very bad.

Just see how many times he either scored or assisted first goal in half a season, that's very good for a 20 year old playing as winger.

Obviously he should improve even further as Manutd will keep on signing players but few of our fans just can' wait to write him off.

Stop being such a crybaby, picking Sterling over Rashford is just common sense - no one is writing him off.

OP's question: Sarri would maybe go for Rashford, Pochettino definitely for Sterling. If it's a question who's better at this particular moment, it's a non-contest.

I just meant in terms of what he's showed. Sterling is one of the best in the world in his position, & if Rashford can achieve anything near that, he'd have done well for himself.

Welbeck had a pretty good start at Arsenal, then went missing for a few years. It's only now he's finally seemingly found his feet again under a new manager, at nearly 28 years old. Maybe Rashford would benefit from a new manager... I mean, that's what your fans have been saying all along, right? I just don't think that, with things how they are right now, that Rashford will reach Sterlings level, or maybe even come close to it.
