"Need"
1.requirement, necessary duty, or obligation
2.lack of something wanted or deemed necessary
3.urgent want, as of something requisite
4.necessity arising from the circumstances of a situation or case
5.a situation or time of difficulty; exigency
6.a condition marked by the lack of something requisite
7.destitution; extreme poverty

verb (used with object)
8.to have need of; require

Hmm. Women's football would benefit from (ie needs?) Manchester United's involvement, but i don't see how MUFC needs a women's team.
I'm not quite sure why you decided to post this but surely it's quite obvious. We have a big fan base and a lot of them are talented girls/women who would love to represent the club they support. Surely, thats the point?

I was questioning your idea that MUFC needs a women's team. I say evidence of need is absent.

If we had a Ladies team, we could've signed Rebeca Tavares and Shanga Hussain; it would've convinced their significant others to make the switch to OT.
<See, there is a legit reason to have a Ladies club>

I saw LvG’s name in this thread and immediately started laughing. If Phil is getting slaughtered for tweets years ago, could you imagine LvG as a manager of a woman’s team? He’d be sent to the gallows the second he said “I tell my players to get horny”.
Can't imagine what would happen when he decides to show his balls...:nervous:

Phil Neville's comments were actually very good. Asked about Manchester United not having a women's team, he said: "I will be encouraging them. A club the size of United should be the leaders, the pioneers." To describe it as need, is to exaggerate to make a point. Nonetheless there may come a time when United do "need" a women's team.

They may need it because FA and PL rules about what constitutes an Elite academy or what a top club has to do to act as good corporate citizens may demand it. They may need it, because the PR and marketing hit of being the only top 6 club that doesn't have a team may outweigh the cost of operating it. They may even one day need it because our own sponsors may see it as a missed opportunity - particular if the England national team do well in next year's World Cup.

So, I think we can get dragged there eventually as unwilling victims. Or we can use our marketing skills to reduce the cost of operating a professional team. Or we can lead in a different way and try and make a virtue of it - so instead of buying ourselves in at the top we declare a commitment to building a team based on local talent and working our way up.

Meanwhile, I want a women's team, at least partly for the completely selfish reason that when they read out the England team, I don't want to keep hearing the words City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. I'm sure some other fans (and prospective players) have better reasons than that.

Might be nice to have one but we dont
"Need" to have a womans team.

Its not going to make any difference to our league position or results whethere we have a womens team or not .

I hate this arguement that you have to do something when you clearly dont

To be fair - Phil didn't say that we need one. Just that, "I will be encouraging them. A club the size of United should be the leaders, the pioneers."

We should have one, we develop talent that then has to move on to another team to play.
Plus I have 2 daughters and I'm worried they might support City because they've got a womens team!

Whilst we don't have a female team yet, wonder if this is part of the bigger plan we're just not aware of...can't win anything with kids right!

We've had a junior team for a while. A good one apparently, that gets good results and regularly produces junior internationals. At the moment it's best graduates go off to other clubs like City and Liverpool.

The only other PL club not operating a women's team are Southampton and they've got one in the pipeline. They've chosen to go down the route of creating a U21 now, with a view to a full team growing out of that. That's obviously an option for United as well.

If you look at just the WSL sides instead, and trying to buy in at the top. It's only just becoming a fulltime league - next year the WSL league teams will have to give the players contracts for at least 16 hours per week. In terms of wages - the top English players are on around £50k/year including their sponsorships and a national team FA contract.

The FA should sack him. The fact this guy is managing our women is farcical.

Let’s be fair to Phil, tonight. Lineker looks shellshocked - very possible he knows more than us what’s happened at Leicester tonight - and probably none of the three wanted to go on live TV after today.

Fair enough, I hadn't thought of that.

Mixing up some peoples names means feck all anyway.

It's like saying because my mom calls me by my brothers' names sometime she must be a bad parent. Who the feck cares, he got a name wrong.

I do feel a bit sorry for pundits.

Anybody can mangle their words or get two names mixed up. It really doesn't matter.

I doubt he genuinely believes Leroy Sane plays for Liverpool.

Phil Neville gets a lot of stick for some reason. He seems a really nice bloke.

Your mum doesn't get paid, plus she's unsackable, she does what she wants.
And Phil gets paid for providing analysis on football which has nothing to do with accidentally mixing up a couple names. It is a completely ridiculous thing to complain about and suggest a man should lose his job over it.

Clearly Phil gets paid, doesn't get sacked, and does whatever the feck he wants.

I never said this. It just annoys me that he is so inept at his job (that he is getting paid an obscene amount of money for - possible from tax payers money) that he even manages to repeatedly get players names wrong - as well as the whole host of other blunders he constantly makes. All I'm asking him to do is to be a little more prepared, as clearly he usually isn't very.
