He is more than ready, just needs to play.
He looks like he has good football qualities (strong, fast, good pass, good cross), but Kolsanic got in behind him at least a good 4-5 times last night. He does need game to improve, and I'd be happy if he could become something like TAA at Liverpool, but he'll struggle to be as good purely because our front line is far less lethal and fluid as Liverpool's so Dalot won't be able to make as many good runs or passes for us.

Didn't see the game but seeing conflicting opinions about his performance. What were the positives?
He made a couple of recovery blocks/tackles when the ball was played in behind him and Kolosinac got into a good position. Arsenal focused down that side and looked like they could get something out of it. He made 1 key pass, attempted 4 crosses but they lacked quality. He had 63 touches of the ball which is the 5th highest of our players. But he also had the 2nd lowest pass completion after Rojo with 73.7%.

It could have been worse if he didnt make the recovery blocks but Darmian looked more solid on the other side. But he obviously has plenty to improve on both without the ball and with it.

Thanks. I'm kinda shocked Darmian played well but that's good to hear too.

Not a great game for him in fairness but the talent is there he needs to play. He'll make mistakes, of course he will, but see how Poch is keeping that Argentinian defender in his line up at Spurs even though he's made quite a few high profile errors. He recognises the talent, like we can see with Dalot. Let him play there and grow in confidence. Its not like we have quality players being kept out of the line up by him. You can tell with certain players even when they aren't playing well, that they have the ability and I get that with this lad

My question to all who watch both the youth and the first team. Is he better or has more potential than Laird?

Great physically, good right foot, shocking tactical sense while playing as a wingback.

Just for those that are not aware, he was great against Liverpool last season playing in a back 4 and this is largely why he was so behind the play this game. It is quite common for fullbacks to struggle to switch to wingbacks and vice versa. Darmian is a perfect example, looks a very good player as a wingback and completely clueless as a fullback.

So persist with Valencia and Young?

We have very poor FB options, Dalot and Shaw re our best options in the squad right now. I for one, cannot endure much more of Young and Valencia. Darmian is just waiting to be sold.

Dalot is young, but exciting. Let him play, we're screwed this season anyway
Valencia and young are both better than Dalot right now. Dalot will hopefully be better in the future.

Don't think it has anything to do with that change. He's just not a fantastic defender, fullbacks in big clubs don't really have to be though. He has the physical atributes to make up for positioning flaws.

He's a great athlete, very good technically, scores plenty of goals for his position, has the right mentality... he just needs to start playing and I guarantee you he'll become one of the best rightbacks in the world.

Having watched the Arsenal game twice, I can conclude that Dalot, is a few years away from being at premier league level IMO.

But he looks a good prospect, due to his physical attributes and basic skill levels.

I would say he has a lot more potential than Luke Shaw but that is not difficult.

Better? Easily. Potential? Who knows. Laird has it all. Much like with Blackett, it's a question of whether he can concentrate and gain the nous and work ethic he'll need at the top level. In terms of pure talent they're both very good players though, only time will tell.

 Where did you pluck Blackett from? He was never anywhere near the talent of the likes of Laird.

I didn't say he was. He had plenty though, he just had nothing upstairs. When he was 15 he was England's best defensive prospect or up there at least but the coaches never seemed quite convinced by his football brain. I'm not saying Laird's the same, big fan of him and have been since I first saw him play when he was in that Mercedes cup at 13 or whatever, but I'm by no means certain he'll make it as he's still far from the required level for the first team. As ever it's all about the attitude and a healthy dose of luck.

I've watched both players a fair bit and I believe it's gonna be a very interesting battle in the coming seasons.

I haven't seen a whole lot of Dalot to be honest, only the games he's played here. Laird on the other hand I've seen plenty, he's one of the best players in the academy. He's excellent, usually rock solid and I think he's even better going forward, so often he'll win a tackle near our box and within a few seconds he's at the other end of the pitch counter attacking. Laird has all the tools to be a great full back in the future, Dalot has some real competition in the future.

Imagine beine being 19 years old. In a foreign country. Playing a midweek, evening kickoff for one of the biggest teams in te world. Aginst another one of the biggest teams in the world. In front of nearly 80,000 people you can see all around you. And a live TV audience of millions. Following a big money move from your home country. In a side that's struggling. With the eyes of the world's journalists on you. Replacing a player who got to the World Cup semifinal as first choice RB in the Summer. In only your EIGHTH senior game in a top league.

No wonder the kid was nervous. I'd have have been a bundle of nerves in that situation, too. Until you've been in that kind of environment, you can't know how it'll affect you psychologically. Take all of the above together, and the match was the pressure-equivalent of taking a penalty in a shootout. Jose's obviously been treating him with kid gloves these last few months for a reason.

Sometimes it's worth taking a step back to remember our players (and manager) are all human beings with anxieties and self-doubts like the rest of us.

Dalot'll get there eventually. He has a huge amount of adjustment to get through first. More than almost anybody else we've seen at United in years.

He seems like a good purchase. He certainly has all the traits that you want in a full back these days so it remains to be seen if he can adapt to life in England and the PL. Would be lovely to just have this headache of a position sorted and give him time there to develop.

I don’t care what he does on the pitch this season. In 6-8 years time he will be up there as the best fullback around. This is purely based on his character and personality. He has a resounding effect on me any time I’ve watched him talk and act. It’s an absolute bonus that he’s talented physically and mentally on the pitch

Think he looked pretty good actually considering the points already raised in here by others regarding his nerves etc. He isn't exactly blessed with pace it seems but he certainly isn't slow either. His technique seems solid and his body movements, reactions etc. is quick enough. I think his crossing will get better a lot faster than other parts of his game too. Only from what I have seen, Varela in some games has looked like more of an interesting prospect than him, but I have bigger faith in Dalot than I did in him and I'm not even sure why.

Top Reds criticizing the lad. If he was English or from the academy he would be hailed as the next Cafu. Guess we should've made him play for the youth team and promoted him like we did Fosu-Mensah then they'd be happy. He was brilliant. 1. He played as a wingback with no support because the midfielder wasn't coming over to cover him. 2. It was his first full game back after an injury and he still got up and down the flank. 3. He didnt let his head drop when he made a mistake. 4. He can use both feet so he is obviously a much better footballer than Valencia.

Nerves definitely played a part without question imo. I remember a Dutch CB we signed from PSV in 1998 and he was all over the place on his debut. He was 26 years old at the time too. Nerves got the better of him, nevermind a teenage fullback making his full debut infront of 76,000 fans.

He is likely to exceed both of them at their peak as a RB in 2-3yrs of regular playing time in a stable back 4

A lot of caveats about the quality of opposition, of course, but feck me that got the juices flowing. A full back that can cross!

Best attacking performance from a United full-back in a long time. Has already played more dangerous crosses than Shaw has in his whole United career.

Superb crosser of the ball. Our attackers aren't used to having players in their natural positions who can whip a great ball.

We finally have a wide player that can cross since Gary Neville/Beckham
