Losing to Comeback Winning!
Goal difference after 15 games: 2007-2018.

2007: +18 (25:7)
2008: +19 (29:10)
2009: +21 (34:13)
2010: +19 (35:16)
2011: +21 (35:14)
2012: +16 (37:21)
---
2013: +3 (22:19)
2014: +9 (26:17)
2015: +10 (20:10)
2016: +4 (20:16)
2017: +26 (35:9)
2018: -1 (24:25)

What a difference between the last and current season...
Such a big difference between the two era.
And that's despite Fergie's United known to be slow starter.

2016/17 only big problem is finishing vs small teams. Costly problem despite the fairly good football.

2017/18 is an anomaly -- Goals galore and tight defense.
  • Fantastic start with Pogba and Mkhi producing magics (stopped early after Pogba's injury)
  • Lukaku and Matic on consistent good forms
  • Left wing duel between Martial/Rashford
  • Martial is in good form always contributing goals/assists
  • Lingod towards end of December
  • Young and Valencia in great form
  • Easier to focus parking the bus when you're confident the winning goals will come and starting 11 mostly are in good forms.
Fast forward to present, the two 'key' problems Mou insist on having almost every game -- starting both Lukaku and Matic whom are on terrible run of bad forms.

It's hard to pinpoint exactly what affected our form,
It's not that hard. The difference is how matic influenced games when he started with us to how he waned later on along with this season. Similar can be said about lukaku.

Title is gone, and we only have a slight hope at top 4.

Saddest part is currently we're relying on City, Pool, Chelsea, Spurs to win both Cups to have any hope to even get Europa League!!!
Don't worry, we'll win the Champions League this year and automatically qualify for next year ;-)

If we don't make ucl it will be a big upset to all of Manchester United.

And (hopefully) the end of the Mourinho reign.

Forget Champions League, forget Europa League. Sack the manager, hire some analytical minds, and appoint a sporting director.

This may turn out to be a lengthy table in a couple of months. Not a bad idea though as it highlights the gaps in performance better.

Why not cut the table after the bottom team(s)?

I agree. There's no point in having points below the bottom team/s
It’s supposed to be a visual representation of the table, and cutting off the bottom impacts on that. For instance, it might give the impression that Burnley hasn’t three times as many points as Fulham.

This is a good way of looking at it. Personally, if you wanted to really geek out, I'd normalise the distance by the average points per game needed for top 4 (e.g. 2.25). This would put us above 3 games of average points behind 4th at the moment.

This is a good table.
At this point we are still far away from CFC and AFC.
And we are slap bang in the middle of the table.

I'm not too worried about Arsenal. If we put up a run, we'll be able to catch up with them. Chelsea is the team that will be hard to displace. With Hazard in this majestic form, I can't see them dropping too many points.

Only 12 points behind City, that's where we should be aiming for.
We're not as far off as people think. City aren't the same team this year and no one else besides Liverpool is making strides. We could end up finishing third behind Spurs and Liverpool this year if we continue to win against the smaller teams and take points off the teams above us. I just feel like anything is possible at the moment.

I admire your optimism, guys.

This season was finished two weeks ago. As much as I like to see us playing nice football and getting positive results, let's not expect us to overtake both Arsenal and Chelsea.

Remember that nobody expects us to get into the top four, but we may actually have good cup runs.

Imagine not being optimistic in December, new manager, good feeling around the club, just don't get not being positive and hoping for the best. Long way to go.

6 points behind at the half way mark but better squad than both of the other clubs and a bit of momentum building, I really don't see the point in writing off top 4 just yet. It won't be a failure (on Ole's part) if we don't make it but it's certainly achievable.

People are just remaining pessimistic.

Clearly it’s not over just like the title race isn’t over, but if you concede early you won’t be disappointed at the end. If we manage it then everybody will be surprised/happy.

It’ll still be tricky as we cannot slip up but they can accord 2 losses in that time, so it’s still looking doubtful. we will have to beat them at home for sure.

This season now is more about rebuilding the team confidence and structure ready for the new manager.

It’s 8 points or more like 9 because of GD. Possible but really difficult.

City have had a blip, but they are miles ahead of us and we have absolutely no chance of catching them. They just happen to be missing the best defensive midfielder in the world.

Our target should be arsenal, and if we can catch them then our target becomes Chelsea. The ultimate goal is to improve and set a foundation that will allow us to play attacking football again. It's a good start but we need to understand how far we've fallen.

Top 4 is definitely possible as long as the results keep coming, we really need to beat both Chelsea and Arsenal to make sure! Also mental how we’ve gained 6 points on city and we are still 12 points behind.

We are not going to finish top 4. We should now focus on qualifying CL by winning CL this season. Finishing 5th or 10th does not matter. All planning should go for CL matches. Let PL be the training and warm up for CL this season.

This team can win CL.

You should probably let Ole know this, probably won't try to win it otherwise

Great idea showing real positions. We can only go out and win our own games now, finishing in the top 4 obviously relies on arsenal and chelsea having a poor 2nd half to the season. One game at a time and see where we are. As long as im enjoying watching games again im happy.

Today I present you a different (and longer) way of this table.

Just to show that Liverpool haven't won anything yet (although I don't want to say that they're not so good, this year they really are).

Surely the number of points needs to secure the title should be 90? Man City are currently scoring points at an averag of 2.35 per game. Over a 38 game season, that extrapolates to 89.3, so 90 should be sufficient.

That's assuming they pick up the points at the same rate. In an ideal scenario it able be :

No. of games left for team in second * 3 + 1.

So in this case it would be 102 because if Liverpool get 102, City can do nothing about it.

OK if it’s a theoretical limit, but I think the idea that two teams are going get over 100 points when it’s never been done before by any team is a touch unrealistic.

We are no longer slap bang in the middle. We are now firmly in the top half and reeling Arsenal in.
As someone said earlier in this thread, AFC can be overtaken, but CFC, who are still far ahead, are going to be difficult.
