I need to accept we have punched above our weight in the last years and that our current level is a 6/7th place battling it out with the likes of Everton, Leicester and soon Wolverhampton. The pace of the money and the league has simply caught us and now we have been left too far behind to recover. The biggest problem is that we have a big club structure so how are we gonna deal with it? I really don't know.

Might as well stop supporting Arsenal to save my life

You guys needed a defensive overhaul. Emery obviously realised this, but he's got the implementation terribly wrong. Buying a pair of old-timers that were not even in high demand is NOT the way to go.
At this ppint, considering a decent young def costs 30m+, you'd probably be better off finding some young academy talent and sticking with him. Short-term suffering but you can't afford anything decent.
Offensively you've got enough for top 4 surely, PEA turned out to be much more than I expected when you've got him.

5th-6th is on par for us. Getting a 5-1 pounding is a reality check that Emery with a bunch of bargain bin signings is not going to work miracles without big money to spend. Obviously it’s a bad result but our league position is where we belong until we spend big.

They went about 30 games unbeaten and we are only 3 points behind them. FRAUDS.

Hazard FC will find a way. They are weaker in attack than us and Arsenal, but they have a headstart on us and don't have a soft mentality like Arsenal.

They are gash. No different under Emery than they were under Wenger.

I’m confident we will finish above them. It is Chelsea who I have my eyes on.

Imagine we overtake them? Would but a real dent in the outlook of their season.

Your fans need to accept Wenger wasn’t the problem. Yeah it got stale with him towards the end. But Everton can spent £50m on a player whilst Arsenal are saying that’s their budget for the whole season is the problem. Unless the board show ambition then the problems will remain the same.

Well if ever we got a dose of reality, that was it.

I do believe Emery will get us ticking again, but any spending we do has to be on making that defense as solid as as can be. Lot of posters saying our unbeaten run was down to a lot of luck and crap finishing by our opponents aren’t wrong (not that there’s anything wrong with a bit of luck) but if this aspect of our game can be set up with the right personnel I do believe we’ll be capable of staying with the pack. But without serious spending ala the pool, city and Utd we won’t be ever leading that pack.

Anyway, tomorrow’s a new year.

Happy new year to all!

No, he was still part of the problem because he picked the players and the tactics. He needed to go.

Absolutely not. It would be a fight for the 5/6th spot so it would chance nothing.
That's why I mentioned outlook. In reality, there's not much wrong in the 6th best squad coming 6th but it would be a startling reminder that Arsenal haven't come that far from the last two season under Wenger and how much they still have to do.
It would be scandalous if they don't back Emery over the next two windows.

No one expects us to finish immediately in the top 4 after years of misery. This is season is just about knowing who is good to wear our shirt. Hopefully we can make a massive overhaul in the summer.

Some people are too harsh on Arsenal. I think Ole's United is very much like Emery's Arsenal: breathtaking pace of interactions at times combined with defensive frailties. And those two things are not unrelated.

Both slow and very quick build-up play are vulnerable to intense pressing. The boundaries within which the pace of exchanging passes makes for a good balance between attack and defense are quite narrow. Arsenal are too quick in their one-touch football at times and this makes them lose the ball in dangerous zones time and again. The balance between attack and defence is not quite right and Liverpool exploited this weakness. Emery has time to fix the problem. Klopp needed 3 years to do it.

How can you say that they’re like Ole’s United, when based on some complicated equations I’ve just used United are on course to get 114 points over the course of a 38 game season based on our form since he come in.

United have a much better keeper & midfield. Both teams have questionable first choice defenses. Auba/Lacazette are two of the best in the league, but your front 3 is nothing at all to be sniffed at, either.

All in all, I'd much rather have United's squad right now. Klopp needed 3 years to do it, sure, but you know what else he needed? A shitload of money. Will Emery get that? I really do wonder... He got £50m total to rebuild a squad after taking over from someone who had 22 years at the club  Whoever gets the United job will have a better starting position & much more funds than Emery can dream of.

I do think Emery is underrated as a manager, but there's a limit to what you can do on a shoestring budget, even as a top 6 club. Arsenal look destined for Europa League for quite some time unless they invest heavily.

Your board needs to stop being cheapskates and spend money.

Another problem you have now is that you don't have many assets you could sell to generate funds.

He was a huge part of the problem.

I am just not sure whether Emery is part of the solution though.

Absolutely.

Emery is good but won't succeed without serious investments in the squad.

If the likes of Everton and Wolves can afford to pay big money is there even any reason to think they'll get top 6 next year if money of their own isn't made available?

Over six transfer windows (three summer, three winter), Klopp has a net transfer spend of £139m. In one transfer window, Emery has a net transfer spend of £66m (all figures from Transfermarkt). The difference is that Emery doesn't have a Coutinho-value asset that he can sell.

Arsenal are in bigger trouble than us, they dont have the financial fire power to go out and splash the cash like we do. Clearly they need a new defence the same as us. They are strong in attack. What is interesting is that both teams have as their highest earner a player who is no where near good enough and both teams will have a problem to ship that player out.

They DO have the financial firepower, they just have a really tight owner with priorities elsewhere who will not spend the money required to get them back to where they should be. You also can't really make any judgement on Sanchez as two weeks ago we practically had a whole squad (bar De Gea) that was nowhere near good enough and look at us now. He needs to have a chance in this new rejuvenated side before you start talking about shipping him out. Personally, I think he's going to be fecking awesome.

Without CL football, they will have comfortably the lowest turnover, compared to United, City, Liverpool and Chelsea. Spurs may even overtake them with the new stadium.

Klopp had a far inferior squad when coming to Liverpool. He's also a world class manager who has done this before, whereas Emery has a history of average league placings, and a generally mediocre managerial record.

For every Klopp or Simeone there are lots of managers like LVG, Dalglish, Moyes, AVB, Rodgers, Ramos etc who failed. I don't expect to see the same improvement Liverpool have seen at Arsenal.

Don't forget the ridiculous stadium prices they charge. I think just their matchday revenue alone is twice as much as City, Spurs and Chelsea's and second only to United but don't quote me on that. Their wage bill is also probably one of the lowest of the top 6, just above Spurs.

They are not as skint as you may think. If they want to go big in the transfer market they are more than capable of doing so....but they won't.

Kroenke is just like Mike Ashley really.

That said Lacazette, Ozil, Alexis and PEA over last 4-5 years has cost them nearly 150m plus another 50 in wages so decent enough outlay in the final third of the pitch.

This season has shown with Ozil isolated they still have plenty of match winners upfront so they need to spend serious money on defence, particularly at FB.

Midfield has potential but Xhaka still dosen't convince me.

The last full season for which we have figures is 2016/17. In that season, the wage bill was £199m, fith in the top 6, but only £9m less than Liverpool, so pretty much on a par.

Their commercial revenue is way below Chelsea and Liverpool, let alone United, so matchday revenue doesn't make up for this. In 2016/17, the turnover was £420m, but that was with CL money. Without it, I think the turnover for 2017/18 will be sub-£400m. We're getting the figures for the other top 6 trickling in. Chelsea reported £444m, Man City reported £500m (obviously, treat this number with a grain of salt, but that's what they are reporting), and Liverpool will likely report somewhere between the two. Arsenal will most likely be at least £50m below Chelsea.

Of course, they still have £160m in cash, so they could spend that but it would be a one-off, and I can't see Kronke sanctioning it.

Think Xhaka has improved a bit a long with Torreira, but he still needs to do more.

They dont have the financial muscle similar to ours. I mean who else could spend 50m on a CM and not play him much. Regarding Sanchez, he was also garbage for Arsenal the last 6 months he played there, so my judgement is reserved on him. Clean slate under Ole, let's see how he does

I didn't say they were on a par with United, I was just making the point that they could spend big if they really wanted to. They have the resources to do so.

There's a Catch 22 if you are not in the CL. You are competing against clubs that are, and therefore have more resources than you. It doesn't apply to the Manchester clubs, but it does apply to Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs.
