Mathias Pogba - ‘Mourinho was the problem’

The Frenchman’s brother, Mathias Pogba has offered an insight into Mourinho’s managerial approach during his final few months at the club, suggesting that he was to blame for the team’s woes on the pitch.

“It was Mourinho who was the problem,” Mathias told RMC Sport.

“Mourinho still wants to be the centre of attention. The problem was Mourinho, right down the line.

“In the locker room, outside the locker room…everything, I know my brother, and you tell him, ‘Go. Go play ‘, the rest, he will do it.

“From what we see of Mourinho, he always wants to be the maestro, the centre of attention.

“(Paul) does not even calculate that aspect: you respect him, he will respect you, you trust him, he will produce big performances.”

Not to go all armchair psychologist but I can't help but feel like the resentment towards skilled players comes from him never reaching any high level as a player.

You don't really ever consistently see this sort of clash of ego's/dick measuring contests with former pro players turned managers and their players

Hardly a gob-smacking take from Pogba's own brother, but to be honest even if we say there was blame on both sides there was never a contest between Pogba and Jose. The latter had to go and so far that's paid dividends for the former.

I was Jose In until the end but, looking at how we've played since he got sacked, Mourinho does seem to have been a major problem for Man Utd. There are others, such as our defence, our often difficult to understand transfer policy, but Mourinho cannot explain a good measure of blame for the way our season blew up before Ole.

I held Pogba responsible for his poor performances when he had them and was constantly aggravated when i felt like he gave a poor effort or made horrid decisions that cost us. I nor any of us were blind to the roll Pogba played in that misery. I agreed with a lot of Jose's sentiments about not only Pogba, but Shaw and Martial. The problem to me was all about how he went about it. Jose had too many of these types of issues with too many players. Jose being the common denominator in all of those equations. When Jose has $200mil worth of personality clashes sitting on the bench while we were losing to Liverpool. At some point you have to "trim the low hanging fruit". And Since Jose has left Pogba has been excellent. Working harder then ever, playing smart, and SMILING. As frustrated as Paul has made me, I can't be upset about the end result. I just hope he keeps his head down and continues.

Pogba didn't sent his brother. Mathias was in a show named Le Vestiaire where they invite footballers and discuss about things that happens in and around the locker room. Petit asked Mathias about his brother's relationship with Mourinho and if it was affecting his game, he extended it to other players like Sanchez too.

Despite his well documented flaws, Jose tends to respect his ex teams and players by not accusing or criticizing them unless they draw first blood (e.g Casillas recently). That's a very good thing. Maybe that's why some of them are not averse to taking him back if the press is to be believed.
I also like the way some of the players have responded when questioned about Jose after he was sacked. They have refused to take the piss. At the end of the day, football is a sport and participants, after rocky periods, should show themselves mutual respect. It's a small world and football can be very strange. Some of them might still end up in the same team with him one day. Who knows?

But Mathias is hopefully not speaking for Pogba. He is well within his rights as an independent person to share his own views on Jose, Paul and United.
