Not Carrick. At least on here. If anything he's been hyped up since. Quality player that shone and stood out when others faded. Just a cog in our prime though. His best attribute was consistency. Nowt wrong with that mind.

Pretty underrated in the wider picture but surely not the most.

Apart from Cole, some other 90s forwards like Ian Wright, Robbie Fowler and Les Ferdinand probably no longer get the recognition they deserve.

Mostly agree with that. I believe his 12-13 season really deserved every bit of praise he got as he was truly exceptional that year but I’m not sure he was underrated before that season.

It has to be Zico, 524 goals in 770 games playing mostly as an attacking midfielder, more goals that all modern strikers( excluding Ronaldo and Messi obviously) imo the greatest attacking midfielder of all time.

Milner - basically every English pundit has been saying he's very underrated for the last two years; when will he start to receive the praise he deserves?

Just off the top of my head! Rob Jones, had he remained injury free, would have owned the right back position for England throughout his career. Gary Neville must thank god for the luck he had with Jones' injuries as otherwise he wouldnt have got a look in.

Andrei Kanchelskis is never mentioned when it comes to great players, and lets be honest, you lot had a lot of them, but I enjoyed watching him the most when he played. He was quick, direct and his crossing at times was just amazing.

Mention Jan Molby and the first thing anyone thinks of is that fat lad. Not the fact that he could pass better than anyone in the game, or the fact he was lethal from set pieces, or he pretty much won games on his own. Probably the most underrated player I can think off.

Ray Parlour was a staple in the Arsenal midfield, he won every tackle, he could pass, he could score, he was THE engine in a great Arsenal team.

Aston Villa went through a stage when they were one of the most difficult teams to beat, competing for a european place and domestic trophies, Bosnich was one of the main reasons for that. An excellent shot stopper who had everything a goalkeeper needed. Although his career started to fade at United and Chelsea, I still think he was one of the most underrated goalkeepers we have seen.

David Rocastle. A midfielder who would have fitted in todays game very easily, imagine what he would do at sides like Liverpool or Man City. He could play midfield, wing or attack and was more than competent in every position he played, a constant threat who constantly on the move, making things happen on the pitch. We got Michael Thomas back then, I still wish we got Rocastle!

Just my opinion of course, but I have fond memories of those players and today, they are never mentioned.

Could one make the assumption that quite a few people here would pick Carrick ahead of Gerrard in 'their team' then?

Which you do realise would make you look quite stupendously fecking mad, innit? - :D.

oh I dunno, early McManaman was a scary looking proposition

before descending into being a gold-plated bellend at every opportunity, obviously

Got to be Xabi Alonso / Javier Mascherano for me. Both are modern day legends but didn’t get the recognition they deserved until they left our league.

Gerrard was a great, great player but his life was made easier having those 2 behind him!
That 2008-09 was impressive through the middle. Very lucky Rafa spent a lot of money on Keane and upset Alonso by trying to replace him with Gareth Berry instead of realizing what he had and spending money on a right winger.

Ricardo Carvalho
I always thought Terry received all the credit while Carvalho always seemed to be the consistent and calm presence at the back for Chelsea. Not necessarily saying he was better, just that Terry got much more credit then he deserved. United's defense always seemed to be spoken of as a duo, whereas with Chelsea, the media seemed to portray it as the Lion Heart John Terry and everyone else.

Park Ji-sung. I think it's understated how well he did for us until his injuries. Had he been a local academy player and not an Asian I think people would have been purring over him.

I'm not sure Carrick applies considering the sheer number of mentions so far, albeit admittedly mentions coming on a United forum. In recent years I've seen plenty of opposition fans express plenty of praise for him as an intelligent and capable midfielder. He's probably appropriated rated as a top class centre-mid who often carried our ailing midfield in Fergie's later years, albeit a midfielder who fell short of being on par with a lot of the division's top midfielders.

Saw someone mention Andy Cole on the previous page and I don't think that's an awful shout. It's easy to forget how prolific his early PL career stats were, and he was probably (generally speaking) our most important striker during the most consistently dominant spell in the club's history, albeit one alongside several other top strikers. Anecdotal maybe, but I also find people tend to be a bit surprised when you tell them how high he ranks in the all-time PL top scorers list.

Alonso's another alright shout. Probably rated fairly in retrospect but was easy to forget how pivotal he was to Liverpool at the time. Added a certain stability and composure to their team they lacked once he left.

I wonder when his career is over, what type of legacy Fernandinho will have.

In terms of smaller names that maybe weren't the most under rated ever but were still very good, and perhaps under rated on their day as well as today, there are a number of center backs who were quality that were really overshadowed by bigger names at the time and I think they are largely forgotten; Richard Dunne, Sylvain Distin, Brede Hangeland, Christopher Samba. All quality on their day though

Leon Britton as a CM also seems to have been able to go somewhere else and maybe improve his legacy but he seemed to love Swansea. Also, I still find it amazing that Nzonzi played for Blackburn and Stoke City for so long. I wonder if people forget how good he was for both teams

Also, maybe Jussi Jaaskelainen

And personally, I always loved watching Tuncay when he was at Middlesborough. I hated that team, but there was a couple year stretch where he was really fun to watch

Amazingly consistent. Never seen as a top player prior to Pool move.

Beckham wierdly is far more respected Globally as opposed to by Utd fans!!

I don't think Zico played in the Prem.

Kanchelskis is definitely one of the most underrated. 94 to 97 he was one of the best players in the league. He banged in 16 goals for Everton, after being out injured for 2 months with a dislocated shoulder (his reciept from Lee Sharpe for leaving). Sort of forgotten about now.

Why would it? I'd want a team that can actually function, not act as the supporting act in the Roy Of Rovers show.

Carrick from our players.

Tbf both Aguero and Silva are underrated, imagine if they played for Liverpool, they would both be regarded as best players in the history of PL.

I'd say Aguero too. Seems like his fantastic goalscoring record is just taken for granted, while when anyone else puts up similar numbers they get a lot more plaudits (Lukaku, Kane etc)

Always thought Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink never gets the props he deserves, he was a cracking player in the early 2000s.
Came in to say him. He's an oft-forgotten player.

Also, James Milner and Michael Carrick are good shouts.

It's because he became a cultural icon for reasons outside of football so a lot of casual fans around the world assumed he must have been the best player about.
