Good football rules that were binned

There were quite a few positive innovations in the late '90s and early '00s which didn't last long but I feel should have been given more of a chance to bed in.

Moving the ball forwards for dissent - I thought this was a superb idea at the time but many people claimed it often put the attacking team at a disadvantage as some free kick specialists would prefer to shoot from a further distance. Surely this could be easily solved by giving the attacking side the option of whether to move it forward or not. You could even give the players the option of moving the ball 10 metres in whichever direction they prefer.

Golden Goal - This was pure drama. It only lasted a few years but in that time there was Ahn, Trezeguet and Blanc all scoring iconic golden goals. There was a criticism that it made extra time period too defensive but that doesn't seem to have changed much since the rule was scrapped.

"Daylight" offsides - While never officially a rule, in the early '00s Premier League officials were directed to only give offside if there was a clear distance between the attacker and the defender when the ball was passed. For me, this was much better. Gave more of an advantage to the striker and just made it so much easier for the officials to do their jobs. I'm hoping that we'll go back to this when VAR causes a large number of good goals to be disallowed by marginal offside decisions going against the forwards.

Are there any others you guys can think of?

Golden Goal was great in theory but usually quite rubbish as teams were more scared of losing than they were excited by winning.

This still seems to be the case without Golden Goal though. Most extra time periods are boring.

I'm not sure about ''daylight" offsides, but to me offside has become a little too literal at the cost of common sense in the modern game. There are few situations where the strikers chin, top of head, arm etc. jutting slightly beyond the defensive line is going to be a significant advantage to the attacking team. If an attacking player's furthest forward foot is level with the defender's furthest backwards foot that would be good enough for me regardless of what the rest of the body was doing in the vast majority of circumstances.

Silver goal, anyone remember when Greece scabbed that game against Czech Republic in the euros. Crime against football that, I bet Jose loved that Greece side. Everyone behind the ball defending a lead from a set piece.

Yeah, I really don’t know how football managed to make a rule to prevent goalhanging so complicated.

I think that more subs should be permitted during ET to help alleviate tiredness.

They should’ve at least called it Platinum Goal to make it sound like an upgrade.

I’ve often wondered why the offside rule is not treated with the same definition as a ball being or not being over the line. The entire ball must be over the line for a throw in or a goal. Should be the same with a player. We can’t expect a human to get it right. They don’t see a player as being offside when clearly he was a yard offside. Maybe VAR will help.

Personally I’d stick half an hour of GG after the half an hour of regular extra time. I really dislike games being decided on penalties and feel that a lot of teams just decide to settle for them once ET starts.

I loved the daylight offside. Did not last long at all, but for me if any part of your body is level with the last defender you should be on side.

I am all for "daylight" offsides. Promotes more attacking play. I would also be for offside ruled off if you collect it in an onside position. For example, if you are offside when the ball is kicked, but you are moving towards the ball and collect it with 2 players behind you, then I don't really see where an advantage is and I would be all for the offside being waved off. It would bring more flow into the match...

As for some of the good rule changes, pass backs to keepers was a great change, but as a keeper growing up, it was hard to get used to. The other one was giving a keeper 6 seconds. I still remember the old days of bouncing the ball and taking 3 steps. Then bouncing (or rolling it) and taking another 3 steps. Then doing it one more time before I had to get rid of it. That was ridiculous...

Completely agree with this, can never understand the offsides for 'coming back from an offside position'.

There is no advantage at all, I've seen offsides where the ball is collected in their own half because they were in the opposition half behind the last man when it was kicked. It's absurd

Golden goal was absolutely trash. Remember being completely terrified every time the opposition was on the attack, every shot was heart attack inducing.

I once won a 5 a side tournament thanks to Golden Goal. Final went into extra time and the opposing team had kick off. Their striker got the ball from kick off and smashed it towards his own goal, the ball flew past their super confused goalie into the bottom corner. True story.

Agree. It was a much better rule. The Mata disallowed goal in last season's FA cup was an absolute joke.

A lot more commonsense on here than all the rule makers put together over the past several decades.

Top marks. :)

A good rule that was binned was the max. 3 foreigners per team rule

It all started to go down after that rule went away and after Bosman of course

Of course there is an advantage. Getting a run to the ball gives an advantage over a more stationary defender. That’s why you see strikers start behind defenders on goal kicks.

I remember playing in a local cup competition as a kid (7v7) and instead of golden/silver goal we had something called diamond goal. It was basically a golden goal but every other minute both teams had to give up on an outfield player. If no one had scored by the time there were 3v3 left the ref would call it a quits and decide the winner with a coin toss.

Would love something similar tried in professional football, obviously without the stupid coin toss. Would give the extra time some real dynamics instead of just being an extension on regular time.

Apart from being a cracking 90's Stallone film... Wasn't "Daylight" more of a guideline then an actual rule?

glad to see the back of golden goal but 2 changes that could be made for the better is rolling subs and no offsides. Similar to hockey.

rolling subs allow teams give more pitch time to players (particularly younger players) sometimes young players dont get on at 2.0 for fear the opposition score. this way you can blood a young player and if it the opposition get the upper hand he can be rolled off and then "Harry kane" gets to come back on. Also means more potential to share minutes amongst all subs and less impact/fatigue on the starting 11 over a season. dont stop the game for the rolling sub...so no time wasted for this.
No offsides, it wont degenerate into goal hanging. but forces defenders to go with the player or play deeper allowing the midfield more space to play.

Lets swap the ball for a puck while we are it. Sorry but that is too fundamental a change for me.

These are definitely the most infuriating offsides. I too think that if you've had to move way from goal to collect the ball then there's no advantage. Though if that was added as a rule, it probably makes a convoluted rule even more convoluted. It's a rule that seems to get more bloated every season.

Very few binned rules were good - that is why they were binned in the first Place :)

But the by far best change to football-laws - to refuse goalkeepers to pick up backpasses. Watching an old game is just awful.

This has been trialled at some sunday league levels for the past year or so, though unfortunately, the game does stop for each one. Probably good for a pub league player to have a breather, but if it was to ever be rolled out at the top level, subs should just happen quickly when the ball is out of play, and the onus is on the team making the sub to get players off and on the pitch quickly, and not have the game completely halt until they do.

I think that should be the case with all subs anyway, whether rolling or not. The whole 'walk slowly from the opposite touchline' tactic is the worst. Either stop the clock, or wait for a stoppage and get your subs on quickly.
