Maybe he's related to Garth Crooks. At least that team would be interesting as hell to watch...

How would you work Aguero, Eto'o, Messi & Henry into the same team? Leaving Sane/Drogba out because I feel they're a level below those 4... Would you still have to drop one?

Iniesta would be busy in midfield when they’d have to defend having to cover 4 positions :D

I loved him on MNF.
I thought it was all very awkward, half his answers didn't really make sense, I'm not entirely sure he understood the questions though. Clear language barrier despite the length of time he's spent in the country

I hoped he'd use the show to go public on his clear hate for Pep but it was all very boring and complementary and not one mention of a birthday cake :(

Agree with Touré: Rafa Marquez was a full package defender. He was tough to the bone and could play from the back like a midfielder.

Out of that team I'd probably drop Sane for Xavi and put Messi wide right, then it would stand half a good chance.

His reasoning was that you'll never get the ball back off them and they would defend in possession, essentially Spain at their peak managed by Ardiles and thrown into the 50's

Taken to the Nth degree, it's not as loopy as it sounds... theoretically, the whole opposing team will be in their own half trying to win the ball and that opens them up to the high press. The backline there is supposed to sweep up behind the..erm.. attack.

I bet a 3-2-5 could actually work with the right personnel.

People think that team could work

How on earth has he left Xavi out for Sane for a start.

The most ridiculous part of his 11 is his omission of Xavi. The greatest CM of the last 20 years possibly longer. Toure said this in regards to the midfield and Iniesta as his only choice.

“Because he is the only midfielder I would have there, given the others”.

Massive admission of Xavi there, totally dismissing how good he was. Absurd reason.

This formation wouldn't even make sense in 1930, it has 0 defensive minded midfielders

How the hell does a midfielder posts a lineup tha has Iniesta as the only CM with the rest all forwards ? Imean, feck me, out of anyone else he should know the importance of a proper midfield ?

Valdes
Alves - Kompany - Puyol - Abidal
Silva - Xavi - Iniesta
Messi - Aguero - Henry

The best team he’s played with.

Interesting formation. Would you have the likes of Effenberg/Keane in a midfield two? Or say Redondo/Xavi?
The issue here is people associate winning or contesting for the ball in hard-nosed manner when, as we see all the time now, if you press as a pack, even the most diminutive players can turn the ball back over to their team miles away from the bigger players in a backline or even the back-end of midfield.

Obviously Iniesta by himself is absurd, but you put him together with a Xavi, along with those ahead and they are going to turn the ball over and then keep it more often than not. I think the middle CB is also going to double up as a sweeper or a DM so then you've got a normal midfield three for a time.

I'd go with a possession-based pairing that are press resistant over the generic midfield monsters because they're simply better at recycling the ball and making opposition midfielders reluctant to keep trying to go in for repeat challenges.

To be honest, many systems from the past just require the correct personnel to work, in my opinion. There's no way we'll see anything like it with so much at stake, but I don't think it working is risible.

It should've been

-------------------Valdes
Alves-----Kompany----Puyol----Abidal
-------Xavi----Busquets----Iniesta-----
------Messi-----Drogba-----Henry------
