Apparently Jose’s system was restrictive and did not allow players to express themselves. Scott then plays in the same midfield as Fred and Pereira under Ole who were supposed to be better as a result of Jose leaving. He plays better than both.

You can say what you want about his supposed quality, but its hypocrtical to lament Scott for what he has shown before but give Pereira and Fred a pass because it was easy to blame Jose for their shortcomings.

If everyone gets a clean slate, McTominay does as well. As it stands he has done better than the other two under a new manager and system. That might just be an indictment on how poor the other two were, but the point still stands.

People wanted to play more attacking football, more open football. Fred and Pereira start in midfield and can barely handle Reading. McTominay had to move to a deeper role and we set up more defensively in the second half.
This sort of comment is so predictable. Let’s jump on the back of the (apparently) popular duo and grossly inflate the performance of the poor, unpopular kid. It’s the same sort of nonsense that sees Fellaini praised for passing the ball in a straight line. Meanwhile, Herrera and Matic are expected to contribute in so many other, more creative ways.

Pereira and, in particular, Fred have been torn new arseholes on this forum over the past 48 hours. Where is this fictional support (support that McTominay doesn’t get, allegedly) you speak of?

All three of them were shite yesterday and blew pretty big opportunities. They’re all a lot better than what they showed us, too, which is all the more frustrating.

More of this shit. If Jose has a legacy on the Caf, it's the creation of innumerable 'camps'. If you're positive or negative about any of our players, you run the risk of accusations of fanboyism or whatever the opposite of that is. If we could all embrace the new dawn we've been gifted to wipe the slate for every fecker at the club, that would be just lovely.

As simplistic as it may sound, I liked the way he used the ball when it came to him. He wasnt trying to do things he couldnt do and thus as a result, we kept the ball near the end at times.

Hes not a superstar and maybe hes not good enough for us, but will see what happens with him.

I am astounded as always, that hes 22. I was thinking he was 19/20 recently.

While it's true picking those youths who can make the step up is a complete lottery - I always thought Larnell Cole would be the one, rather than Jesse Lingard - I was rather baffled at McTominays promotion last season. It will be interesting to see how Ole uses him if at all - an appearance on the bench yesterday surely means hes not been written off, although I really don't see anything other than a neat and tidy player. He seems to have a good head on him, which means he will have a decent career, just can't see it here unfortunately.

And that's fine. I know some take offense to the idea of writing off a youth player. Garner is what some of those fans want McTominay to be. Hell, Ben Pearson is the better option, who is doing pretty well.

Interesting to see him come on. He did ok. Still don't think he's got a future here but he seems a good lad.

I think the boy needs a loan, find him a good club where he can develop further. Maybe he can even surprise us and make a name for himself.

Well, I dont take offense to it. I am sometimes annoyed at the manner and the amount of abuse a hard-working kid face, but I do not take offense.

Sometimes I'm also surprised how sure everyone is about their own ability to judge a players potential. McTominay trained with the seniors under Louis van Gaal and Giggs. Mourinho and his team loved him. Mourinho is now gone, but Carrick, McKenna and Solskjaer keeps hold of him. Reading in here you could almost get the feeling that it is unfortunate that these people dont have a few of the guys in here as advisers. I mean, what do Michael Carrick actually know about playing in midfield at this level? Hell, what does he even know about Scott McTominay? It is not like he sees him at training every single day. And it is probably not like they watch every single game we play several times and evaluate every single move of our players, even using statistics we do not have access too. They probably just throw him in there since Mourinho decided to use him to make a point and liked his height...

McTominay is not an outstanding talent. I think we can all agree on that. But some of the abuse he receive on RC is not fair and in my opinion a reflection of poor judgement.

I actually think he’ll end a mid table PL player who’ll have a decent career. I could see a good few clubs taking a punt on him due to his size and calmness on the ball. Is he starting Utd quality? Not really. But there’s only ever room for one midfielder like him in any one game. If he’s content to be a squad player he may still be here for years yet filling the gaps before moving on to get a long contract like our squad players from Fergie’s time.

Yeah, I think he will be a prem player too, like a mid club table (a watford type-ish player).

Great post.

It's one thing not rating Scott but some of the stuff being posted here is a bit of a joke. Claiming he's not even Championship quality, calling him a useless cnut, stealing a living etc

It's like people can't wait to come into this thread and knock him down on a personal level after a game. It's even more annoying in the fact that he's one of our own, been in our academy since the age of 6 and by all accounts is a good hard working kid.

He strikes me as someone that Sir Alex would like, in that his determination and personality is better than his actual ability. Essentially a 6/10 player who has the ability to churn out 8/10 performances on a somewhat frequent basis, but if he doesn't have a man management god like SAF behind him, he just looks average and churns out 6/10 performances as per his ability.

Looking over my shoulder.
Perhaps his problem, with us fans that is, is that he is a well rounded player. He doesn't have any stand out abilities at this stage, but he keeps things simple, reads the game well and seems a tidy passer. Is he that different from a young Carrick, for instance? He's perhaps a little bit bland, but getting games at this level shows he's far from pub player material.

Fletcher wasn't respected by the fans for a number of seasons, it was only when he matured that we started to appreciate what he offered the team.

If the story is to be believed SAF indeed had a word in Mou's ear to give him a shot!

I agree he's a SAF player that will do a job to the letter if instructed well! Some of his great teams had the likes of O'Shea, P Neville, Fortune etc who were not world beaters but were great squad options and club men through and through!

I think Carrick was very highly regarded from a very young age and a bit different in that perspect. But Lampard, altough a different type, had similar issues with fans at West Ham. Supporters claiming he was only playing due to his dad and uncle. In fact, people were calling for a young Carrick to play over Lampard. Lampard must have been twenty at the time and Carrick 17?

Obviously Lampard was younger at that time than McTominay is today. But he was trying to establish himself at West Ham, not Man Utd, at a time when it was easier to breakthrough for young players. People probably did not start appreciate Lampard until he was 24-25ish. Totally different types, but similar story in some aspects.

Agreed on abuse. I don't like the younger players being on the receiving end of insults. I'm completely fine with criticism though so long as it's measured. I don't think citing coaches and calling it a day is reflective of a player's ability. Most of us here don't think Fellaini is a United player yet he was heavily used and in favor by Moyes, LVG, and Mourinho.

If we want to judge a young player's ability, we need to first see them at youth level. We also have to realize that most youth players will not make it at United. Even those that shine brightly at youth level aren't a guarantee. Knowing this and factoring in the fact that McTominay did not stand out at youth level, it rings alarm bells for many of us. Then when you judge him on his ability, you start to naturally doubt him. He's not a particularly good passer. Even against Reading we saw that he couldn't break the line, and he was very cautious in how he passed. He's not great at creating space for himself. This is why there were 1 or 2 times against Reading where he had plenty of space and time, but just tried to shield the ball and tried to deflect the ball for a throw in as he was limited in his ability. He's not some amazing tackler either, although he did well in this aspect against Reading which I did praise him for.

I don't think it takes some expert scout to notice these things. Contrast this to say Lingard. I wasn't a big believer in Lingard, but he had some things going for him. One, he was small and so when Fergie said he would be a late bloomer there was obvious reason for this. Second, Lingard was shown to be a good finisher at youth level. Third, he was also shown to be able to link up play as he had decent technique for a pro, and had good movement. When Januzaj was starring for the u21s after first making the step up, Lingard, albeit 2 years older was doing really well next to him. He then did well on loan. There was more evidence to believe in Jesse.

In general, I agree. Certainly that most youth will not make it. Safest thing would be to always argue that they wont.

Do not agree entirely on the part about the Reading game, but I will not bother to go into details on any of it.

But you do know why McTominay did not play much at youth levels? And you are aware that he too was a very late developer and how this affected him?

Hard to think of too many central midfielders without really strong ball-winning (Doucure, N'didi, Gueye) energy to play as an 8 or passing and defensive skills that let you influence games as a 6 (Rice, Neves), or you need some creativity like a Noble, Shelvey, Moutinho or Gomes provide their teams. McTominay having size and tidiness as primary strengths suggest a good Championship starter or maybe 3rd or 4th midfielder on a Prem side like a Dan Gosling (who was also decently rated as a youth) or Diame to me.

I’d say you could be right. When you look at our previously supposedly highly rated MF youngsters who only made it as squad players here... apart from drinkwater who can’t get into the Chelsea team now... the rest have flopped more or less in the PL. I stil think if we were to sell Scott McT a PL club would give him a shot, would he make it? He wouldn’t be an instant starter on what we have seen so far anyway but It’s so hard to know how these players are going to turn out. Maybe he has more ability on the ball and he was asked to play a simple game by Jose? He’s had some decent moments but it’s impossible to know what his ceiling is looking from the outside. He’s probably worth more to us as an option for the next while than whatever fee plus sell on we’d get for him anyway

Not sure how to feel about McTominay. Definitely will say that he doesn't have the passing range required to be a PL starter and think he would struggle if pressed. A good example of the passing range was at the end of the last match where he just dribbled the ball all the way to the half-way line and then dumped it to Dalot so that Dalot could try the complex pass. In reality, McTominay should have hit a curved through pass to Lukaku to set him in on goal before reaching the halfway line. However he must be doing something right to be getting game time still under Ole. He has had bad positioning before (i.e. Chelsea goal at OT last year) so I don't know if that is a strength either.

Maybe instead of comparing McTominay to Pereira the reality is that neither of them are good enough to make an impact for a Champions League team at this stage. I feel like Pereira has good technical ability but needs to hone his tactical awareness both offensively and defensively to become a better player. That will only come with game time in center midfield and I'm not sure that United can afford to bring him along on that front.

I like Andreas but McTominay has done more in a United shirt than Andreas.

I don’t think either will make it here, but if I had to wager a guess I reckon McTominay will be here longer than Andreas.

He is calm , composed, better at keeping possession and offer physical presence that Andreas probably will never have. Doing a bit of (pointless) stepover and some fancy (unsuccessful) through pass doesn't make him the better player and all the manager seems to think the same.

I see him being the replacement for when matic needs a rest, and he's more mobile so..

I feel he can do a good job there, nothing flashy, just get the ball back and pass the ball to more creative players.

I agree with you. How many players were deemed overrated and expendable under Mourinho until Ole took over?
Rashford, Pogba, Herrera have become fan champions over night whilst under Mourinho they were expendables. Alot of fans on here were very vocal that In the event that Mourinho should get the sack Pogba should get binned aswell. Some posters on here make you wonder weether they start doubting the sun at night.
If Andreas were to be given a run in the team I forsee a similar change in peoples opinions but unfortunately for him Herrera’s been excellent.

John O'Shea was a better footballer than McTominay though. If McTominay had the balls to nutmeg Figo I wouldn't mind his limitations but he doesn't show much. By 22 he should be starting to show something.

you can tell McTominay is going to be the type of character to make the best of what he has. He has that Fletcher feel about him.

It appears that he is slightly limited in terms of ability but he could develop to be a good squad player

think he needs more football and to figure out what kind of player he is.... he seems to be cut out to be a DM and he seems quite mobile

would like to see him go to the championship to see how he develops

"Jones, arguably the way he is looking, could be our best ever player. I think Jones may be one of the best players we have ever had, not matter where we play him. At 21 years of age, he is going to be a phenomenal player. I think he can play anywhere on the pitch," Fergie said after United clinched their latest league title in 2013.

He also had massive praise for Evans and compared Daron Gibson to Scholes once. Lets also not forget he let Pique leave the club, probably because we had Evans. He also persisted with his talentless son Daren and gave him just enough games to earn a premier league medal when many supporters didn't think he was good enough. Fergie probably rates McTominay because he's Scottish.
Evans was fantastic for us until he suddenly lost it. Jones too. It's not like the praise was without reason. Fans used to want Jones and Evans starting matches at various points and not just out of random loyalty.

He needs to be loaned out for the rest of the season. He's at the stage now where he needs regular games to sink or swim. He's not going to get that here and we have enough midfielders as cover.

He could use a loan but it wouldn't surprise me he gets some increased game time in coming weeks.

Burnley would be a good fit, shouldn't be too hard to break into the first team seeing as they're currently playing Ashley Westwood week in and week out.
