Rooney: Manchester United should go 'all out' for Mauricio Pochettino

"First of all you have to give Ole an opportunity and that's a discussion that has to take place with the Glazers," said Rooney told ESPN.

"But if I had the opportunity to appoint someone, I'd go all out for Pochettino.

"I think Manchester United - certainly over the last 20, 30 years, since Alex Ferguson - have based themselves on youth players, young players, bringing players through.

"I think [Pochettino] gets the best out of his players whether they are younger or older.

"You see some of the young players he has brought through at Tottenham, at Southampton that have gone on to play for the national team, so I think he ticks every box in terms of his quality as a coach, but also his willingness to give youth a chance."

Solksjaer's arrival at the club in December has seen several players improve their form, including World Cup winner Paul Pogba.

Speaking about Pogba's relationship with Mourinho, Rooney said: "Well I think with Paul, I watched him come through the academy at United and he's got a lot of ability.

"But the difficult time he was going through, if you don't have a good relationship with the coach, then it's difficult to be at your top if you feel like the coach is scrutinising every decision you make, every pass you make.

"Paul Pogba will give the ball away, he'll try passes [and] it won't be the right pass at times, but you have to let him do that because two or three of them passes will create goals, will create opportunities.

"I think he found it difficult under Mourinho. I think a player and a manager with big egos clashed and the outcome was never going to be great."

That's fair. I've enjoyed hearing him speak since he's moved on from England, he seems to come across well for a so-called thick scouse knuckle dragger.

I think Poch is a good manager but I don't think he warrants the clamour for him.
I won't be disappointed if we get him, but I'd rather stick with ole as of right now.

United are easy looking to beat. Poch football might not be as attack or exciting but it'll work in the grand scheme of things. If ole tightens up some of his tactics, I might prefer him.

Appreciate everything you've done Rooney bud, but you talk an awful lot of nonsense. Just the other day you were backing Mourinho and saying the players should do more, then after he was sacked it was that everyone down to the tea lady was in the dumps cos of Mou.

You have no credibility and quite frankly no one [who understands football] cares what you think.

I know you'll definitely read this so fix up aight,

He has expressed his opinion and he may really feel Pochettino is the right man for the job. The timing isn't ideal since the whole Ole love-in that he was a part of, specially during the post-match interview when he recounted his conversations with Ole after getting the job.

The way I see it is that he doesn't have an agenda here.

A perfectly reasonable point of view that the majority of United fans will agree with.

Well I’m not sure I agree with it but I’ve no problem with him expressing his opinion. It’s not like he’s pushing for a mate to get the job.

Was this satirical, or just a spectacularly stupid post?

He sounds sensible, but this isn't really the right time for such speculations. Ole is doing great and it's unfair to him to mention Poch at the moment.

In all of his recent interviews it's pretty obvious that Rooney didn't think much of Mourinho.

Which is surprising since the way Mourinho handled the Rooney situation seems to be one of the better points of his reign.

Nothing wrong with what Rooney has said here.I generally agree with the majority of it.
Would take Poch over Ole everyday of the week.

When we beat Spurs a few weeks ago I couldn't believe how Poch didn't work out we was getting into there wings and carried on with he's same tactics. I spoke to a few Spurs fans and they said he is stubborn when it comes to things like that and that's he's only downside?

Maybe the reason it was a relatively smooth exit was because Rooney didn't fancy staying to play for Mourinho

I agree with Rooney here, I love Ole and he's done a great job but Poch is more established and fits the club.

Nothing wrong said here by him to be honest

We have our old philosophy back with Solskjaer, we'd be ridiculously stupid to get rid. The club will be falling for the same trap it has over and over since Fergie left, just going for a shiny new toy rather than the logical choice. I don't fancy having a manager that has such an emotional connection to a rival, it never works out. Solskjaer knows the club in and out and so does Mike Phelan. If they stay they'll know exactly who to go for in the summer, and then we could actually have a chance at challenging next year.

Pochettino

Pros
- has a more proven record, more established as a manager
- his tactics/style seems better (whole system of pressing and attacking) and may suit us
- promote youngster, with some great success in recent years (Kane, Ali)
- working great with budget, despite limited funds, his team has done really well in recent years

Cons
- no gurantee he can adapt here and make good use of our players
- will cost us alot
- no guarantee he may wants to stay here for long term
- Never win a trophy before

Solskjaer

Pros
- has a perfect record for us so far, exceed all expectations
- his attacking style is exactly what we all want here, entertaining to watch at times
- promote youngster, not afraid to bench players with higher reputation
- he brings happiness to the dressing room, and understands united through and through
- seems make very good use of players, everyone improve playing under him

Cons
- Relatively unproven, less established as a manager
- Seems lack of abit of defensive tactics, and players fitness management in 2nd half, our def looks shaky at times
- still uncertain how well can he handle those tough situation (despite winning away against Spur, where De Gea is in God mode)

Verdict
I really hope Ole can stay here for long term, he clicks all box I want for new manager here. But if we go for Poch instead, I wouldn't mind too.

Mourinho is the greatest defensive manager in the history of football. But, if anything, Ole has made us more secure at the back.

Track records are not always the best indicator of future performance. Sometimes it's better to go with what you know, especially when what you know is working brilliantly.

A Crack Habit.
I thought making ole even caretaker manager was silly and doomed to fail. Now just more than a month since then I now don't see how you can't give Ole the job full time.

He understands the club and how it works on a level that you just can't expect anyone who hasn't been there for a few years to understand.

There is no guarantee that Poch can come in and do here what he's done at Spurs and will cost over 40 mil in compensation apparently so could end up a very expensive mistake, in the meanwhile you have a manager currently making the transition from Mourinho to where we are now look easy.

There is an argument that this is a unique club that can't simply be understood by just any manager, perhaps our biggest mistake post SAF was disrespecting just how important the atmosphere and culture he built around the club was to our success, we could be set to do that again if we don't appoint Ole.

Ole all the way for me with Phelan essential to come back as assistant and a director of football needs to be added to the mix, I don't care how much you have to pay Molde and Phelan's Aussie employers if we make top 4 you just have to get it done, right now far from being the risky option I thought he was, he looks by far the safest one.
