Could Rashford become United's all time goalscorer?

Rashford's developed a little slower than Rooney who was scoring goals for fun at that stage of his career already. But Rooney also peaked too early and goals slowed down before he turned 30. If Rashford manages to look after himself and score around 20goals a season its possible.

It's possible but depends on his fitness and the quality of the teams he plays in. Rooney didn't have injury problems (apart from short spells out in 2006 and 2010) and played alongside ronaldo & giggs and in front of scholes & carrick.

I agree with the general message on here. Rashford is way behind what Rooney was as a youngster. Rooney is one of the best 18 year olds I have ever seen, if not the best and better than Messi in my opinion. However that does not pre determine how Rashford will be in the future. Look at Kane, hebonly started playing at 21 and now has an incredible record and that is whilst being Spurs number striker. Salah has only been in england 2 years and has already notched up 60 plus goals. Im not saying that rashford will be prolific but he has every chance to be uniteds number one, and the talent is clear. I believe he will finish the season with 20 goals in all comps and if he is continued to be played as the main man, a regular starter and avoids injury he should be able to reach 250 goals in 10 years. Rooney continued to score after 24 in a 35 year old mans body. Granted he has a great team around him but we have pogba playing with freedom and range these days so rashford has a great chance.

I agree. The thing is you can't really compare young players, it's impossible to predict how young players will develop. A lot of United fans predicted that Rooney would be better than Ronaldo, and look how that turned out.

Rashford could definitely play all the time and still be a very good player in his 30's, it all comes down to how you take care of yourself. When Ronaldo was the same age as Rashford is now he had played more games for us, and he is still going strong today because he works hard, eats well and take care of himself.

Rooney on the other hand did not.

Rashford definitely has the potential to be our top scorer but that is if the motivation sticks.

Rashers is an impact sub to be used when the team need a goal to win or get back in the game.
He is not a born goal scorer and has missed many easy chances, especially one on one with the goalkeeper.
Sure Ole can work on his finishing but you have to be a born a goal scorer to hit the dizzy heights we are talking about here.
Also he is not a well built kid and gets shoved off the ball in every game.
He's a good impact sub to have and I'd keep him for the foreseeable for sure.
However if we get a silly offer for him then id get rid. Silly offer being an amount that would recoup the cash wasted on lukaku and another 50 million for rashers so offers over 140 million would appeal.

hes not a natural goal scorer, his 5 in six for ole is a flash in pan just like when he was scoring when broke into the team under LVG. give him a chance and see what he scores in over 20 games.

he was practically a full back under jose.

So, you are basically saying Rashford is a £140m worthy sub?

And to the other point in your post, do you remember that Portuguese kid, Cristiano? Was he a born goal scorer (what the hell is that, anyway?)? Have you noticed his goal scoring record in the last, I don't know, 10 years?

Footballers train and improve. Being clinical, hitting the target with your shots, aiming for the corners, all of it. That's why clubs employ coaches.

Get real.

Far too early to predict or even suggest Rashford can become Uniteds all-time top goalscorer, Think of all the great strikers we had in the past & how long Charlton’s record stood, shows you how incredible scoring 250+ goals for United truly is.

Of course Rashford has age on his side could have anywhere between 9 & 14 more seasons at Utd but we have no idea what the future brings i.e Injuries, age & size of his decline after 30 years old, he may leave etc.

Before speaking of his overall goal record for Utd, he has some milestones I think he has to reach to solidify his status as Uniteds 1st choice striker in the years ahead.

1. Score 20+ Premier League Goals in a single season - not every season as off seasons can always happen but he has to prove he can do it.

2. Score 25+ Goals in all competition in all competitions - should be the expected total of Utds 1st Choice Striker. Zlatan & Lukaku both have done this in recent years

- Note with both of these he had been used as a sub a whole lot, played on the wing, played in a José Mourinho system as well as going through the inconsistent developmental years 18-22. So hasn’t really been given a chance to prove he can do this & at his age is no knock that he hasn’t, would have been amazing had he somehow achieved it but still stands, have to show you are capable by actually doing it

Following on, before looking at 250+. Rashford has the 50 goal milestone hopefully soon (potentially this season) but certainly whilst he’s 21. Which should celebrated in its own right rather looked past.

& finally slightly going off topic but also really looking forward to Martial getting to the 50 goals milestone too. To have you young players in the same squad reach these numbers around the same time, similar length of time at the club is fantastic & very exciting looking ahead

Losing to Comeback Winning!
Top 4
  1. Rooney, 253 goals
  2. Charlton, 249 goals
  3. Law, 237 goals
  4. Rowley, 211 goals
5th and so on are not even close.

---

Rashford now at 21 y.o. with 41 goals.

Career so far,
15/16 -- 8 goals
16/17 -- 11 goals
17/18 -- 13 goals
18/19 -- 9 + ?? goals

How can he get closer?
+ Start scoring a minimum of 20 goals per season. (Every year 20 goals at least, start now this year).
+ Long stay at United until his 30s would be a big advantage.

Assuming he'll be that 20 G/Season type of player (he's nowhere near), and let's say he'll start declining at 30 y.o., he'll have about 200 goals already.

Screw it, let's just see how it goes  doesn't matter if he will breach it or not. Record is not everything.

I said I'd take £140 million for him in this world of silly transfer fees. Lukaku is worth a lucky bag, paper clip and half a packet of rolo's imvho.

Rashers scores a few against tripe opposition and suddenly he's a world beater ha ha. Think you should Get Real fella and stop this love in.

First of all, where did I state my part of 'this love in'? Did I say anything about Rashford's ability or how much I rate him?

Your evaluation of £140m for a player you seem to rate quite lowly is baffling. As is your evaluation of Lukaku.

If he stays injury free, then yes.
Everyone knows that he has the quality and thanks to the form he is showing, it is quite certain that he will be the one leading the line for years to come. Unless Greenwood takes his place and Rashers has to shift to wide, which I think is unlikely, as I believe we might start playing with 2 strikers, I think he can easily score atleast 20-25 goals a season (under 2 striker formation) for the next 10 years or so, which should be enough to catch Rooney.
Another thing that works for Marcus is that unlike Rooney who burnt out pretty early in his career by playing like a mad dog and helping out the defence and all, Rashers, is not that hard a worker in defence and is generally more focussed on goal scoring

As long as he keeps working with Ole then his finishing will continue to improve.

He's in a great run of form at the minute and I don't see why it can't carry on if the conditions stay the same.

Think about the record in 7/8 years time if he's still here and our number one striker.

Totally agree. However I'd still have Ronaldo over Rooney at 18. But he's certainly up there.

I know what Rooney was dubbed, hence me saying he was overhyped. Rooney more talented than Ronaldo has never ever been true, like at any point, at all. And if you thought so back then, you were wrong (and not just in hindsight).
Yup. Agree. When Rooney was still with Everton and we played them, he kicked Ronaldo out of frustration because he couldn't catch up with him the whole game. I think most of the hype about Rooney being better than Ronaldo came from England. Outside of England, most people rated Ronaldo higher.

Btw, looking at the comparison of numbers between Rashford and Giggs/Rooney just show how crazily good the two players were for Utd!

What striker can you get now with 140m? Sometimes a player is just priceless to the club. And Rashford is one of them.

Right:boring:

Anyhow. His way of striking the ball is so good he could have scored a few more worldies outside the box if he was a bit more lucky. Look at this

Some of those goals would have been out of this world.

I'm not sure about that.

Rooney looked on his way to being the better player back then. He was talented, but he also looked like he had the mentality of someone much older. He worked hard and grafted on the pitch.

Ronaldo (pre 2006) was also known as a talent, but there were question marks on his mentality and decision making. He played with more flair back then and him pissing about on the ball was seen as a big negative to his game.

It's ironic, and shows you how little we outsiders can know, because Ronaldo was the one putting in hours in the gym, and taking care of himself while Rooney was drinking and smoking his way through his twenties.

Ronaldo had a problem with showboating in his early years, but the biggest difference between him and Rooney then was their striking technique. Rooney had plenty of games when nothing came off for him as well but scored a belter and his stats came out better. English football followers also loved the latter’s hustle and bustle, but the reality is Ronaldo outshone Rooney in both international tournaments they played in during those formative years (Euro 04/WC 06) and it was only a matter of time his stats caught up to his general play.

The ‘Rooney looked more talented than Messi at the same age’ is also pure madness. Messi was destroying defences for fun by himself already aged 18/19, injuries hindered his playing time and delayed the recognition, but he was already on another stratosphere even then.

Unlikely. Nothing against him, and Rashford is going to be a great goal scorer. But if he is not taking all our penalty, his chance is much reduced.

He's just turned 21, and unless something drastic happens, will stay at the club his whole career. It'll be a tough ask, because Rooney at this stage in his career has scored more but it's sort of doable.
The challenge will be to keep playing week in,week out for the next 10 years. We will obviously sign top attacking players over the course of the next few years,so Rashford needs to keep improving rapidly over the next 2-3 seasons if he’s to become indispensable to us(like Rooney)....
