Also factor in that Best & Robson wore it in the age before actual squad numbers, so often wore different numbers as well (In fact when Giggsy came through, many focused on Best wearing 11, and even Eric in his first season wore 12 and 9 occasionally) so their names were only added in to bolster the “myth” after the fact

Every single goal that Manchester City scored from 2011-2016 would be a Toure through ball to David Silva on the byline who'd cut it back for Aguero/Dzeko to slot past the keeper.

Not sure if it's a weird feeling but Henrik Larson is always mentioned on here like some Zlatan like signing that drove us to success whereas I didn't see what was so amazing about it? I guess the weird feeling is the craze over him when nothing incredible happened.

Also, footballers were always immature men with weird haircuts and piercings but suddenly the same pundits are crying about the "modern day footballer"??? I don't get it.

Yeah, this doesn't belong here but I agree. I think the idea of Zlatan being a United player was amazing but in reality he wasn't all that special? I think it's pretty cringy how he talks about conquering the premier league when we finished 6th when he was here.

The whole legendary number 7 thing is a load of bollocks anyway imo. We've had more average players wear the shirt than legends. Best, Charlton (neither of whom wore it every week), Cantona, Beckham, Ronaldo...am I forgetting anyone?

Then Owen, Valencia, Depay and Sanchez. That's nearly levelled the number up and that's just the last 10 years.
Think Owen was worthy of it... in a way he used to be a magnificent player. Also it's hilarious that Liverpools boy wore our 7 jersey and won the premier league with us and not them!

By the time we signed Owen though he was largely past it and was obviously only going to be a squad player - seemed jarring to see him taking it when we'd literally sold one of the best players in the world.

Yeah but in terms of a "big name" wearing it, didn't seem too big of a deal to me. And besides like you said he was a reserve/squad player so I think Fergie hardly cared about our number 7 replacing Ronaldo.

Lingard and Rashford are the same age, while Matic is much older.

In reality the age difference between Matic and Lingard is smaller than the difference between Rashford and Lingard.

Hmm...not sure really. He didn’t really live up to it with his performances though. Barring the derby winner and a hat-trick against Wolfsburg, was he much good for us? I don’t think it’s enough to merely be a big name who’s done it at other clubs if you can’t repeat it at United.

His role at United was backup striker and I think he was a fine backup.

Which isn’t what a United number 7 is supposed to be. At least not one who’s meant to be living up to his legendary predecessors.

But that's what the other posters are saying. There have been far more average number sevens than good ones so it's weird that this idea of #7 having to be best. Anyway we're going off track here.

EDIT: you were the one who said it

Lingard is closer to Matic than Jesse. Crazy.

I think many things can be said regarding weird feelings of football with Lingard. Seems like he is younger than Pogba too but he isn't.

Didn’t he get a goal in the league cup final as well?

I know, I was one of the ones who said the number 7 shirt isn’t that legendary as there’s been more meh players than legends. Then I gave Owen as an example, which you disagreed with.

I disagree with tying him with Depay and Sanchez.
But surely Sánchez is another example of a player who probably was worthy of it once upon a time, but who’s done nothing in his time here to warrant it? Owen scored what, 17 in 51? Decent figures for a backup striker it’s true, but that’s not what we’re told is the standard of a united number 7.

True, but Own was a former Ballon D'Or winner. The height he did achieve was more than that of Sanchez and so I think he was different than the other random number 7's we've had. I agree Owen has no business with the famous number 7's we've had but like I said the fact that it was a massive troll job on Liverpool made it worth it for me.

Lingard being born in the same year as Wilshere is another weird one to consider.

Oh yeah definitely, I'm not against his signing at all. That, the derby winner and the fact that as you say he was a solid backup option more than justified his signing. He was a bargain on a free transfer.

Everton always have a month within a season where they look like they'll kick on and become european competition challengers before reality kicks in again.

Mourinho always gets easy cup draws in every competition he is in.

Arsenal always sign a speed merchant and bang him in the number 14 shirt.

Goalkeeprs of teams coming to Old Trafford always find stupid ways to waste time from the off.... tying shoe laces, wiping shin pads, that sort of thing.

Players NEVER get muddy anymore. Like never.

David Ellory is still a professional ref.

Corner flags are pointless..... they are just obsticles for corner takers.

Not true, usually Lingard goes straight after Jesse. Unless you are looking at his full name.

Swindon, Oldham, Norwich, Ipswich, Coventry and Sheffield Wednesday are all challenging for promotion from the Championship, ready to reclaim their rightful place in the Premier League at the expense of no-mark clubs like Huddersfield and Cardiff.

I'm not sure about every draw, but I definitely think there are cup draws, be it FA, League Cup, Champions League that are fixed.
Champions league draw has definitely felt fixed to me over the last few years. There always seems to be some narrative in at least one tie, Neymar back at Barca, the continuous love affair between Bayern and arsenal etc.

There's always a narrative no matter what the draw is though

Mexico always do well in tournaments, but you barelly recognize their players.
Except the ones who, whilst unrecognizable the first time you see them, then go on to play in like 4 consecutive World Cups, seemingly defying the laws of aging (see Cuatelmoc Blanco, Rafael Marquez, Ochoa - the every-4-years world-beater of a keeper who seems to get younger and more agile with every passing cup...and then disappears off the radar in the years between Word Cups.)

As well, no matter how dire the club form of certain Mexican players (Chicharito, Ochoa, Vela, Di Santos,) you can count on them playing well in the World Cup - at least until the round of 16, where they are undone by a masterclass of Brazilian/Argentine/Dutch cheating.

@jem I've always loved that about Mexico. Every squad you see one player you've completely forgotten about because they should've retired about 20 years ago but they're still going.
