They've spent over £700m since 2013, willingness to spend isn't the problem. Bad investments by successive managers has been.
Net spend is actually low compared to our rivals, last summer and this window for example.

All net spend tells us is we recouped some of our expenditure. What our net spend is in relation to our rivals is largely pointless when assessing the Glazers willingness to spend.

They've spent big since Ferguson retired, but Mourinho and especially Van Gaal pissed most of that money down the drain.

Only City have spent more and despite being the richest club in world football on paper we can't compete with a team that is being financially doped. So we have to be shrewd with our purchases but we haven't been and thats our biggest problem.

No it fecking isn’t! Back up that statement because I’m pretty certain we’re 2nd behind City. Look at the spending post Ferguson and tell me our spending is low.

Andreas messed up, should have cleared the ball as he had no passing options. But Phil should never have passed him in the first place...well done to Burnley on the goal...

That's not on Jones.
Sure he's not. I wonder if there's a chance those blaming him aren't the same guys who've complained no end about us not trying to play it from the back instead of hopeless hoofing. You knew it straight off he would be blamed, too. Likewise for mistakes on the right side of the back four.

Andreas can easily pass it back to De Gea, which would've stretched them, and which is what every half decent midfielder should do.

You're probably right he could have.
But Phil also had other options, pass to DDG or lift it over their midfield to Pogba/Lukaku as their midfield was pressing high.
I think they both have to share the blame for that goal...

Stole this from another thread:

Recoveries Made vs Burnley:

9 – Jones
7 – Matic
7 – Shaw
5 – Lindelöf
5 – Pogba
4 – Young
2 – Rashford
2 – Mata
1 – Sánchez
0 – Lingard
0 – Lukaku
0 – Pereira

Jones had a good game yesterday.
Its laughable that people are questioning the pass to Pereira.
Its the right choice and Pereira is not even close to being under pressure.
If you are going to criticise Jones for that then Lindelof should never pass the ball to Matic ever again. There were at least 100 passes yesterday from defenders to midfield where the midfielder was way much more under pressure than Pereira in that situation. Jones even plays it on his right foot, which he should.
If Jones shouldnt be allowed to play that pass we might as well go back to hoofing it to Lukaku again.
The Caf sometimes......

Mad to blame him for the goal really.

Pereira is a professional footballer playing in midfield for Manchester United. If he can't receive the ball there with the time and space he had, then he should seek a new line of work.

If that was Matic or Hererra, they'd have collected the ball and moved it on without fuss and that part of the game would never have been mentioned ever again.

I wouldn't put too much blame on him for their first goal but saying he had a good game is a stretch. He wasn't particularly bad either to be fair, he was meh.

Absolutely, Pereira should have sorted that with no fuss.

That doesnt mean it was a good pass from Jones though. He took far too long and was far too obvious over what he was going to do, Burnley saw it and started their press before he even kicked it. Even if Pereira controls it uneventfully and passes it back to De Gea, it was still a bad pass and caused unnecessary pressure.

It's one of those where Jones clearly didn't want to be on the ball in that situation and was happy to get rid to any red shirt in the vicinity.

Having the mindset to castigate Jones for passing to Pereira is one reason why we'd probably never be as good Pep's City.

It's madness.

If Jones is to blame for playing a perfectly decent pass to a player in space, everyone should just give up and go home.

If that's a 'hospital pass' so is every other pass that isn't a hoof up the pitch.

Stealing a living at Utd for so long but thats not his fault when the club is run by owners and a CEO who clearly don't want to spend what it takes to bring in quality.
No, that's clearly not the case.

This. It is bordering to bizarre castigating Jones for this. People are even having a go at him in the Lindelof thread as well for the other goal where Victor was caught out of position a ltb. So weird.

Yes.
I expected Woodward to tell him he is not being offered an extension. But seems like nothing was said which makes me scared that we will offer him an extension
Have there been any reports/rumours about him extending?

The last page or so is madness. People are just desperate to get their digs in no matter if they're justified or not.
A fair description, yes.

Thought Jones had an ok game, good anticipation was important for us in keepong attacking momentum quite a few times. Not a brilliant pass to Pereira, but quite normal. Is drawn towards the ball at the second goal, I think is worse. A few sketchy duels. Mostly good on the ball.

Pereira was definitely more at fault and should have done better, but it wasn't the right choice to pass it to him. I started getting worried the instant Jones played that pass as it was obviously risky in a situation where three Burnley players were pressing two of our players (Lindelof was too wide to get involved). Risks are fine sometimes, but that was a bit unnecessarily risky for my liking. The key difference between it and the other times that you are talking about is that neither of our centre backs were in a position to receive the easy ball back if Pereira needed to do so, and only Jones was in a position to cover if he did lose it.

There was one similar time with Lindelof (I think?) passing to Matic earlier in the match which I remember thinking was unnecessarily risky, which Matic then did well to play out of. Otherwise I don't remember any that had me worried as soon as the ball was played.

Those ‘risky’ passes are necessary if you want to open up the game. Drawing in a couple of opponents when they try to press and pass the ball forward quickly, creating numerical advantage.

Elite teams all over Europe have done that for age. Castigating a defender for making that pass means you are happy with hoof ball, there are growing pains involved trying to play a dominant style of football.

Taking some risks is fine, but obviously there has to be a line where it becomes too risky to try something. Those two particular moments crossed that line for me.

I'm not particularly blaming Jones, partly because of what you say in your last sentence about growing pains involved in changing to the different style of football. I do think it was the wrong choice of pass in that particular situation, but hopefully that can act as a learning tool about when to push those passes and when not to.

It wasn't even a risky pass. Every defender for a possession-based team makes the same pass 20 times per match.

Do your research, percentages against turnover against net profit and net spend in the last 12 months!

He should know better than pass the ball to a 23y.o infant who played in La Liga you know.

The only thing Jones was wrong is that he should have fingered it to De Gea. Jones is a good defender but sigh he is getting overweight and not adding qualities for himself.
