Why did we buy Fred?

The comparison with Lindelof is a bit silly.

Would by not playing him, make Fred suddenly better next season?

Shame he's not on the bench today, would be the obvious change if the score line gets comfortable

There must be something about him, he’s valued at £50m and is/was a regular in the Brazil national team. He’s looked terrible so far but let’s hope he can pull a Lindelof off and turn it round.

I feel his biggest problem is he can’t just have a solid game, he always looks like he’s gonna make a mistake.

We have midfield trio which is great and it shouldn't be touched for next season. But backup trio is a problem now. Problem who might cost 50,60, 70 mil in the summer. Pereira not convinced anybody that he can be solution in PL, Mctominay the same. So we have Fred as first backup option. If he is not that then we must sell him and buy another player.
We can't enter in next season without knowing is he a player for us or not. Needs games soon as possible.

Guess Woody thought he bought a renewal of marketing authorization for Fred the red.

Today could have been a perfect match for Fred. He was not even in the squad. Is he alright, I mean physically? Is there something wrong with the lad?

I still think he's on a strength training program and is being rested to give him sufficient recovery time.

Got nothing to back that up, but it makes sense if you consider the areas he needs to improve.

Is this the same strength training program which Lukaku and Depay went on?

Fred can't even get onto the bench of our rotated team. I imagine he'll get a few more chances between now and the end of the season and he better take them if he wants to stay at United.

Still not losing faith. His exile from the team is quite strange but I don't think it's because the manager doesn't rate him. Im certain he will play again for us.

He will stay here for another year minimum regardless. We wont sell a player we bought for 50m a season later. We ahd some average dross getting years here, i think he would also deserve another season. Next season is make or break for him.

Yeah I would be worried about the fact he wasn't even on the bench today. I genuinely think if you are a fringe player and you were not involved in today's match day squad then you are in trouble.

Look at Rojo! We'll probably give Fred a new contract and a bump in pay.

Convinced Fred was bought cos Jose was trying to force Pogba out, and now Jose's gone and Pogba is staying he's an expensive backup.

Expensive backup who, once hopefully kicking on, could rotate with Pogba, Herrera and Matic and be important for next season. Depending on our summer, we may not buy someone in midfield and Fred will be our go to man to replace an injured/tired player from our midfield. I just dont think Ole trusts him now when so much is at stake for him and us. He could easily become our most improved player next season, it hasnt clicked for him so far.

I always hope a summer break and proper pre season with a new start to the season will help him settle or any player for that matter.

Hindsight is an exact science. The season started for me 11 games ago and some players have used this to remind us and the club of why we bought them. Some have been rewarded and some like Fellaini were clearly told they had no future here. Too early to form a view of him 11 games in but Ole has already said he rates him so I'm guessing at some point he'll get his chance. I think he's not ready and if we were still double figures off top 4, then we would have seen him and some of the younger players too. I suspect neither will be the case whilst we now have things to play for....

Ha, same thing I was thinking - the famous "proper pre-season".

Fingers crossed for the lad. The current situation is pushing towards Bebe level of baffling. How can a player we paid £50 million for be so far from the first team under consecutive managers?

McTominay is ahead of him in the picking order.

Crazy. I wonder what is going on behind the scenes, i mean he's a 50 million midfielder

I think he is done here, he's barelely played under OGS and now he is not even on the bench against Fulham. I was hoping OGS would give him some minutes in this "easy" game but its clear Ole doesn't rate him at all.
Not this early.

After what Ole said about improving the current player first rather than buying new players, I doubt he is done here, he needs to be given more times to improve his game and after that we will see what happen.

He must have an attitude problem or something. He hasn’t even been that bad when he’s played.

He must be really bad in training to not make the bench when we know we're gonna take off at least one (proably two) of our starting midfielders in a game.

I may be reading too much into Ole's comment but when asked about Fred he simply says he will get a chance but never said how he is doing in training, how good he is etc.

When he gets his chances he just has to play better. At least get the basics right.

If he was performing like he has 5 years ago I would call him a big talent, but now? He should be in his prime!

Fred was never going to replace Pogba. Absolutely no way. Anybody who knows anything about football would know that.
Basically, Fred was always going to be behind Herrera in the pecking order. A scout on this very forum gave a detailed report of what to expect from Fred and everything he stated has been proved to be correct.
The bizarre thing was that the fans ignored that guy and chose to believe that a miracle would happen and Fred would be fantastic for us.

I think Jose was going to try and force Pogba out and then revert to his favoured 4-2-3-1 with Fred doing the box to box stuff and Matic doing the grunt work.

All academic now anyways. Now Mou's gone we're left with a player whose best contributions for us have been in the final third. One who's currently too lightweight to fill in for Herrera or Matic. Yet not decisive enough in the final third to allow us to rotate Pogba. Lets hope he's been killing the weights while he's been out of the squad. At the moment he's had fewer good games for us than McTominay.

We are seriously deficient in the MF. An injury to on of our starting three and we are in trouble. We left herrera out against Burnley and there was a big difference.

Having said that i would rather play Fred than Andreas if Pogba or herrera is missing.

If only we kept Blind. he could cover for Matic.

Even if he keeps the possession and sticks to basics that would be good enough this season. Not expecting arty game that a 50m would buy, not at least this season. Just be there as a good backup that's all.

Can you link me the scout's post?

If he wasn't injured, it's safe to guess his and Periera's days are numbered at the club. Ole doesn't look keen on both and rightly so.

Ole "rates" everyone, He always said positive things in public unlike Jose Mourinho eventho the later was just honest. But it doesn't mean he actually rates him for real, both Fred and Pereira no longer getting any chance since the last time they drop a lackluster performance not even Mourinho was that harsh. Ole drop them both in the easiest game in February when we could/should rotate, which says a lot.

Yeah that's the thing isn't it. Sadly just a failed signing i'm afraid.

Seri for 30m or Fred for 50? Such an unnecessary signing.

The actual problem is the 50 million. If it was 15 million, we'd say that "okay, we bought a backup midfielder". But 50 million? Can Fred be that bad when he cost us 50 million?

50m and 25 yr old. Had he been 19 yr old like Dalot people still would be patient. But a 25 yr old is expected to adjust quickly and perform right away.

We would have been better off signing Perisic. That’s who he wanted, not Sanchez. The club sanctioned the Alexis wages because that’s who they wanted. Of course he agreed to it but at that point you dont turn down Alexis.
 Based on? Yet you get sensitive when someone calls you a Jose fan boy.

Why did they sanction it then? If they didn't want him they would have just said no...
Errm... same reason we bought everyone else we bought under Jose, cos Jose wanted him? When the manager wants a player you do what you can to sign them. Claiming Jose wanted Perisic instead of Sanchez or that Perisic would have been a better signing is based on what? Cos Sanchez turned out to be shite like every other Jose signing?
