Personally, I'm a fan of Mike's new weave. it gives him a bit of an edge and adds some character to his otherwise unassuming appearance. Never underestimate the power that a fancy new hair cut can have on one's self-esteem and confidence. It was probably his girlfriend's idea though. Long may his new found form continue.

Anyone think he had extensions put in between the last game against Watford and Young Boys. It’s either that or his hair grows at an incredible rate.

 why are you surprised? I knew exactly the responses we were going to get when I clicked this thread. Middle aged white men being asked to discuss an afro hairstyle.

Guessing from all these replies they are the cutting edge of style
Right, Whoopi Goldberg, dreads, braids, braided dreads??

I really shouldn't be surprised, but alas, I'm clearly too optimistic.

I don't agree with the sentiment that only style icons can criticize someone's dumb new hair cut honestly. That's like saying, you can't criticize LVG, because you're not a great coach yourself.

I personally think Smalling looks silly as feck and I went to the store yesterday in dirty sweat pants. Fight me.

Agreed. Samson lost his power when forced to have a new hair cut he didn't like.

It is how he has been playing for much of the last 5 years.

Tend to agree with this. If it gives him an edge or makes him feel more empowered, then I don't care if grows it out to Sideshow Bob proportions. TBH, I think it looks good on him, makes him look 'angrier', a defender who might give an opposing player a proper reducer tackle.

Who should sign a bald defender or one with a Pirlo-type hairstyle to partner him. None of this side, front and back cut etc

Anyone remember the Forest player with this hairstyle who had the piss taken that much he cut it off and had a grade 1 all over. "Hes got a pineapple on his head...."

Yeah Jason Lee, funnily enough Jim Beglin said the exact same thing about Smallings hair today. Short awkward silence before the Drury quickly changed the subject.

I think it looks great.

Kinda depressing that the attitudes towards afro hairstyles hasn't changed much since the days of Jason Lee.
Tbf I'm not sure it's a dislike toward afros in particular, I think footballers have shit hair in general. De Gea nowadays and Aguero are the first examples I can think of.

On more serious note, defender and forwards should not have such hairdo as their headers are important. Will he be able to ensure correct deflection using top of his head?

It's teribble. Reminiscent of Jason Lee's pineapple do that Fantasy Football loved so much.

As bad as his haircut is I still like it better than his ball control.

If he would put as much as half of the energy in football as he puts in arranging his pineapple hairs, we'd have half decent centre back

Jim Beglin said it looked “Pineapplish” on the commentary. I instantly began to like it

You're meant to use your forehead to head a ball, not the top of it.

One of the worst hair styles I've ever seen. He looks like a right tit. But if he's happy looking like a tit then more power to him.

De Gea had a terrible tiny man bun phase, but aside from that, his hair's alright isn't it? Looks like he's just got a buzzcut at the moment, Looks fine

Young De Gea though...

He always looked a few weeks overdue a trim back then.

I agree he looks okay there, when it's shorter. I was thinking more like a few weeks back, when it was completely flat and like glued down on his forehead. Couldn't find a picture though
