Interesting to see how he gets on and delighted it'll get the grumpy sod off the BT Sports couch for a while.

Whatever he achieves, Ince could do better.

I always wonder what is it like for these former stars that take over at lower league sides and have to manage players that are an order of magnitude worse than the players they played alongside during their playing days.

Gerrad, Lampard and even Joey Barton (Fleetwood) are going through something similar right now.

Whilst I would love him to prove me wrong, I just don't see PS as a good manager. Well, certainly as a pundit he doesn't seem very inspiring or driven. Not sure how he will translate over to motivating a dressing room at the lower leagues.
Good luck to him but I fear this will not be a sweet romance.

I have difficulty picturing Paul Scholes as a manager, but then again I did as a pundit, also will he be 'old school' or modern in his approach? Cant wait to hear his post match analysis. Good luck anyway Paul, you will need it at Oldham.

He loves Oldham and is possibly the most technically gifted player to play for United. I wouldn't judge Paul on how he talks on bt Sport, yeah he's quiet but Gary Neville is a better pundit and look how that turned out. Paul will want a certain attacking style but he'll want a hard nasty side too, think he will surprise a few.

Has never come across as showing manager ambition from what little I've seen or heard of him since he retired. Can easily see this going the same way as G Nev's managerial career but good luck to him.

Interesting to see how he does. He seemed to want a return to day-to-day football involvement, but not necessarily management. Reckon he would've jumped at the chance of a role at Carrington, but that wasn't forthcoming so has looked for an alternative.

I agree. Never seemed as intelligent off the pitch as on. Reminds me of Zola;gifted and wonderful to watch as a player but s a manager? Not convinced.

Hope I'm wrong and he does well

Possibly. I wish him all the best but he doesn't strike me as a leader of men. As a player he did his job to an exceptional level but he never looked interested in captaincy. He's a Legolas rather than an Aragorn if you will.

Is this allowed considering he owns shares in Salford?
There were a few articles about that a few weeks ago when the rumour started but non from what I read actually said if it was allowed or not.

Am assuming he is as Oldham would look pretty stupid if they appointed him and then had to release him because it wasn't actually allowed in the first place - whether there's special dispensation because Salford are owned by x number of people or because he owns less than a controlling % is to be seen. Might even be perfectly legal but I don't see Roman A being allowed to manage Arsenal for sake of argument.

Difference being Gary Neville was managing in a top league (La Liga) as well as in a foreign language and in a new country. Scholes is managing in English League Two. Nonetheless, I'm predicting Scholes won't be very good as a manager.

I hope he smiles a bit as manager, or his grumpy demeanour would be Mourinho mk2 which I imagine won't go down well. Fans like to see a friendly face on the touchline, not a perennially brooding Dark Lord.

Scholes is probably my favourite ever United player, but he has the charisma of a damp rag. I can't see him being a great motivator.

Nevertheless, best of luck to him. He can't do any worse as a manager than as a pundit.

They are definitely both different situations but Neville was awful. He still coordinated sessions and had had a translator, excuses. Paul knows Oldham and league two is going to be a different prospect but why not, think he'll do well.

Seems like most people have written him off based on his punditry, which is odd to me.
He might not appear like a children's entertainer in interviews, but that doesn't really matter, there are plenty of boring successful managers.
God only knows how he'll actually end up doing, hopefully well!

That’s why it was a delayed decision to appoint; he had to be approved by the FA which has now happened.

I also suspect that Beckham bought some of PS shares but couldn’t say that they were his because it would have preempted the announcement from Oldham

According to the club, Scholes still has a 10% stake. Seems all Salford did was get him to resign as a director so they could say there was no conflict of interest.

Could have sworn this happened a couple of weeks ago or was that just rumours?

Either way, time to put your money where your mouth is Paul.

The people that played with him seemed to like him ok. A lot of ridiculous assumptions are being made because of a television persona.

He spent enough time pronouncing on and having a pop at our recent Managers. Time for him to put his ability where his trap is.

Didn't work out so well for Neville. Not likely to work out much better for him, I think.

Yeah looks like his one of those who would good as part of the coaching staff but not the boss. Then again he could still do better than Roy and Gary

He's on a hiding to nothing at Oldham, no money and a poor squad.

I don't even see how loaning United players will work, is it really good for their development to drop down three leagues.

Like most people I didn't see him as a manager, but this move makes sense because he's not just taking some random club, he's actually a lifelong supporter and he'll be respected there. They won't get relegated this season so he'll have some time to play around without much pressure.

The lesser ones of course. We already have 5 on loan there, 1 at Oldham. Our academy isn't exclusively filled with PL level talents.

I think he will be a good manager. People are forgetting this is league two. Scholes is very knowledgable with regards to tactics having played under SAF. At league 2, a manager like Scholes would be pretty incredible I'd say.
