Stats are extremely deceiving especially in cases like these, Cristiano is the better player but stats have nothing to do with it.

Just seen this the other day and it reminded me how amazing he was. Better than OG Ronaldo, as good as he was.
Lima has dribble compilations that make this look pitifull. Unless you're a sucker for 183739 stepovers.

Career wise there's no debate, but purely based on ability the Brazilian could do more with a football, even if it was only for a short time. Thing is, there's more to football than ability nd CR7 is the complete package. That's also why there's a Ronaldo Messi debate. Skill is just prt of what makes him so good.

Just too bad he's one of the most unlikable, whiny cnuts to ever put on a pair of kicks. Makes him somewhat difficult to enjoy for people who don't support his team or country.

Off course it does.

If r9 is that unstoppable where are the goals then? Surely if you're the best dribbler technicians etc you would have no problem scoring more goals?

Stats like distance covered etc arent worth much but goals scored is the stats that matters when comparing strikers. And it's not even a measly 10-20 goals different but hundreds

I'm not a sucker for stepovers I'm a sucker for exhilarating football which it was after Ronaldo came back from WC 2006. He was unbelievable and I don't think anyone has ever lit up Old Trafford like he did maybe apart from Best but I can't comment seeing as Best was way before my time. Everything just clicked for him and his end product skyrocketed. It wasn't just random dribbles into dead ends anymore. Everytime he got the ball you expected him to do something outrageous.

People love to ignore Cristiano’s crossing and heading ability despite recognizing the importance of wing play in the teams he’s played for throughout his career.

For a big percentage of football fans ‘footballing ability’ means 10% of all abilities relevant to football.
Some of us don't ignore his heading abiliity. In my opinion Cristiano is the best header of a ball that I've seen besides Duncan Ferguson.

They matter but only up to a point. You have to take into account the different circumstances in which they were in too. It’s clearly harder for Ronaldo to score at Juve than it was in Madrid for example.

You’re right that the gap really is huge due to the difference in longevity though. Cristiano will most likely end his career having scored more than twice as many goals than R9 did in his whole career.

Would he score that long range shot against Sporting that Ronaldo did?

Comparing Cristiano to someone who wouldn’t feature in the top 20 players ever is nothing more than a joke, frankly.

What next? Messi v Rivaldo?
If you don't think R9 fits into the Top 20 peaks in footballing history then there is no hope for you Donald.

Ability wise no contest R9 for the win, to have a player as bulky and athletic as he was do slight movements jinks dribbling at high speed would have been equivalent to watching Jonah Lomu in the 90’s in Rugby Tyson in the 80’s or Lebron James now, physical beasts of nature who had the dexterity and slight of touch to match their less athletic peers, quite possibly the best way to describe them would be as phenoms.

Career wise obviously Cristiano, but still give me one to pick for a one off match and I can’t look past R9.

Cristiano Ronaldo left R9 in the dust 5-6 years ago, this thread is proof how high people are on nostalgia.

It nearly is. It not really a high % mode of how goals are scored. So see no reason why that must be a factor at all.
Not really showboating when you ping one in and the keeper is literally rooted to the spot. Queresma is a showboater. 18-19 year old Ronaldo is a showboater. Ronaldo that came back from WC2006 is totally different beast. He tore you apart.

Even Eamon Dunphy had to eat humble pie. I know he's a joker but he's a hard nosed fecker of huge proportions.

If we’re just going to talk longevity and stats then Maradona shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath as Pele but....

Top 20 peaks? Subtly changing the debate again?
I'm not changing it. I easily rate R9 in top 20 players of all time. Its not even a question. I was just wondering how far down the biased route you were going to go.
Do you accept R9 as a top 20 peak in football history?

The original Ronaldo had a higher peak and more talent. Career got disrupted by injuries, by 2 World Cups ain't nothing to sniff at.

Probably, mainly due to difficulty defining a peak for most top keepers and defenders.

It's not just longevity and stats, if we are taking that metric Cristiano Ronaldo shits on R9 from an even greater height.

I'm talking about their respective peaks at which Cristiano Ronaldo was scoring 60+ goals and winning Ballon d'Or vs another GOAT player in Messi. It's not close for me, people remember R9 delivering on biggest stage of all in WC and hence overrating him. Nothing he's done at club level surpasses what CR7 or Messi have done.

Anyways, I doubt you're going to change your stance (or others) for that matter on this topic. I've said my piece why I think CR7 surpassed him long ago, you can disagree.

Don't worry. Better have him than stupid divas like Depay.

I'm afraid Cristiano is out of his depth here as far as football ability is concerned.

It's not a contest between the two imo, as pre injury R9 is much better at everything related to football except for in the air where CR is indeed fantastic. R9 is a much better dribbler, passer and technician as a whole, he's much better in tight spaces as he needs less leg room to operate compared to CR, has a lighter first touch and is a hell lot more press resistant.

Add a sharper finisher to that. CR to all his goals misses a hell lot of chances, while comparing the number of goals between eras is pointless:

Inter scored 62 goals in 97/98, out of which R9 accounted for 40%

Barca scored 102 goals in 96/97, out of which R9 accounted for 34%

Real scored 121 goals in 11/12, out of which CR accounted for 38%

In 14/15 we scored 118 goals, CR had 40%

But the gap in the quality of the goals is big, that's where the difference for me comes from. R9 made better plays, scored better and more difficult goals

What Ronaldo did at Barca, Inter and Real (albeit not consistently because of injuries), Cristina can't even dream about matching. And in terms of technique, they're worlds apart.

Brazilian Ronaldo was arguably the better player at his peak, but CR7 comes out as having had the better career. Suppose it depends which out the two you value more.

Anyone who thinks Cristiano Ronaldo is better than Ronaldo de Lima cannot have been watching football when the lad was playing.

RdL was a brilliantly gifted player whose career was limited by injuries - CR is a talented, but not brilliant, player who has reached the top by being lucky with injuries and working hard.

I'm a big CR7 fan, I'll make that clear, but there's no comparison.

Not sure what the meaning of higher peak is anymore. At Lima Ronaldo's greatest, did he achieve more than Cristiano Ronaldo? Individually or collectively(team). If no, then how was his peak greater than Cristiano's?

Definitely, with the added fact that Depay is also a mediocre player.

I'm Dutch, we tend to rate our players less than the rest of the world. If you want to really get to me, try going after Dirk Kuyt ;)

Not sure how Ronaldo tops this.
