This is what I don't get. Even scapegoating would be understandable if we were doing badly. But we have won 9 out of 10 and people still need something to moan about.
People are right to moan when they see our main striker out of shape and on top failing to justify his position with series of belowpar apprrances. It's not just bad run of form because a dry spell would indicate he's getting into good position and fluffing his lines . That can be excused. It looks like a bad fit for the team to me seeing as he cannot find himself in position to score in the first place due to lack of poor touch and mobility. and it's certainly not abusive to talk about those shortcomings even as we're winning.

It's called setting high standards. Many of us are not content with scrapping for 4th place and getting knocked out of cups in the early rounds. Continuous poor performances are not conducive to a club of our ambitions

Lukaku's performances have simply not been good enough and he is rightly getting criticised

Of course pointing out what you're describing is valid criticism, and I agree with all of it. When I say abuse, I mean the name calling and over the top ridiculing though. It doesn't belong on an intelligent forum. You have to dig through all the crap to find anything of value to read.

The name calling and ridiculing isn't great but he's making himself an easy target to be ridiculed. The comments he was making telling others to be grown men and all that didn't endear himself to the fans and probably made it difficult to sympathise with him in his bad form.

Well we're winning pretty much every game under Ole. We can't be jumping to first right away. He deserves criticism but there's no need for this kind of abuse. I get why people acted this way while Mourinho was still here, but there's no need for it now. I can only guess that certain posters are either children or just have a lot of frustration in their personal life so they're acting out here.

That's because Lukaku, despite size and width, is not so agressive as Fellaini. Fellaini would go all in even if it meant to wound his head, which actually happened a few times.
Fellaini link up , hold up , technique ,first touch , and chest are much better than Lukaku , the only thing lukaku has over him is pace. If only Fellaini was younger i would have kept him as the last belgian in the squad. One of the main reason of Mourinho downfall this season was because of trusting Lukaku , Mourinho was trying to make that first touch poverty to play as his focal point like how he used to play Drogba/Zlatan/Costa. Should have put him on the bench permanently after that miss vs Spurs.

So damn true.

In reality, if a "plan b" striker is really what we want in the squad (and I'm not convinced at all on that) then we should have kept Fellaini and sent Lukaku off to China. Fellaini is better at every single element of target man play than Lukaku. He also works far harder, is far braver, and is far, far more intelligent in his positioning.

That's what I was talking about before. I think a lot of it is down to Lukaku being played at the expense of Rashford and Martial. I think it's time to let that go now that they are playing though.

Kind of agree to be honest. If Fellaini comes on, you know the drill - we'd be attempting something different. Is Lukaku much of a plan B? We aren't trying anything different with him on the field, so it becomes a bit redundant. DISCLAIMER - Im not bothered we sold Fellaini, just agree his 'target man' play is much better than Rom's.

Anyone else sick of the sight of him? Comes on for the last 10 minutes, doesn't break a sprint once. How is his cardio so bad? Infuriating. At this point I'd sell him and promote Greenwood up, even though he's probably nowhere near ready for the first team, purely because he'd actually run.

What? We barely had the ball when he came on.

Sick of the sight of people like you just looking for something to blame him for.

Should have been brought on instead of Mata, but with his recent form and the way we played last night, doubt he would've changed anything.

Either way think we should look to move him on this summer, get back most of our money (if lucky) because at this point he's just an expensive sub with little to no impact on the game.

His limitations in technique department limit our style of play when he's on.

Come on ! After the 0-1, there was a lot of space to operate. That's Lukaku's main strenght. That was THE moment to throw him in the game. If you consider he's just good with space, just use him when you need it. Rashford was bad yesterday but he's young, the pressure was a little bit to high for him.

Probably, that's why I said he should have been brought on instead of Mata. But the whole team looked bad in that 2nd half, doubt that out of form Lukaku would have changed anything for the better. I could be wrong of course.

I agree with you. Sorry for the "come on". Lukaku was not a guaranteed succees but was, IMO, the best change. You bring on Mata to control the match, not to run after a goal...

All good homie, we're just exchanging our opinions, no harm done!

You bring on Mata when you wanna render your attack useless :D

Lukaku reminds me alot of Macheda.
Doesn't know where his position is, terrible first touch, terrible finish, slow, get's outmuscled by everyone and lacks confidence. And with Ole coming in our style of play doesn't suit him at all, although I'm not sure if any top 10 could use him at all. Simply can't stand this guy.
Did great for a few months last season but has been less than useless since March.
This guy needs to be sold as soon as possible.

His job was to occupy Rudiger while the others worked on the massive weakness of Luiz and Alonso down the Chelsea left. Inability to hold the ball up hurt us in the second half but at least in the first his activity was much higher.

He was comfortably amongst our best performers in the first half and held the ball really well. Second half was worse but so was our attacking intensity and hence - options for lay off.

That was less shite than the other games, still not a good performance by any means.

Will be a miracle if he gets 12 goals this season.

His best performance under Ole. Was decent first half but back to shocking in the second, still overall not Utd Standard. Also Sanchez looked considerably better when he came on.

He's the only low point of tonight. Even when we play well Lukaku is still useless

Sanchez was basically running and chasing players so if you mean pressing then yes. He barely did anything more. Lukaku pressed well in the first half but couldn't keep that in the second. You know the rhetorics after any game. Even if he actually assists two goals in spectacular fashion away at Arsenal it's 'good for 10 minutes, shite the whole game' whereas any other attacker would be lauded as having 'match-winning' impact.

On the ball he was absolutely shocking tonight, possibly even worse than usual. I've seen people saying he played well - I can only assume they mean because off the ball he worked harder than usual. Did well in our box but lost out in every single 50/50 and header in Chelsea's half.

He already has plenty of youtube videos of his blunders, but you could make a good 2-3 minute long montage of all his first touch fumbles tonight. He also spent the game arguing with Pogba over his shit positioning and clueless runs.

Wish he would throw his weight around more. Still looking too much like the Belgian Heskey. He should be a real nuisance for the centre backs, but compare him to the trouble Rashford gave them. We were close to playing with ten men second half until he was subbed off. Harsh? Sorry, I don’t think so.

He's still the worst player for us. It's worrying because he's a striker.

He did well, you can criticise him another time.
He was brutal, see more movement and commitment at astro turf. Less pointing, it's not even about his first touch anymore. What has happened him, looks so exhausted and a shadow of the player he was.

when rashford made the break in that second half where he sprinted down the pitch and got in a decent cross to a lumbering Lukaku who made a balls up of it that Really annoyed me, a more livewire less clumsy striker would’ve buried that.

Disagree, I judge them as I see them, Lukaku was better today than previously however, the bar has been incredibly low. I thought first half he finally seemed capable of holding up the ball and using some of his strength but he did still have a considerable amount of times where a poor touch or pass stopped the moves. The fact is there is no agenda on here aside from people willing to defend a player not at the required standard. Even against Arsenal he really wasn't that great aside from a brilliant first assist. He hasn't shown enough in a Utd shirt, i'd still have him as the worst option of all our attackers.

Better work rate tonight than usual but comfortably our weakest player overall.

Everyone else fantastic though, so not saying he was bad by any stretch.

People have reached a stage of clawing for anything positive to look like a better supporter. Barely noticeable other than the times he failed to put the ball where it was supposed to go.

Thankfully everyone else was very good.
