Not quite sure how anyone can suggest that 2 players, neither of which have played a single minute in the Premier League, would be as good as Rio/Vidic.

Rio Vidic? I doubt those two will be that good even if we signed them.
Would be surprised if De Ligt doesn't reach that level, to be fair. Koulibaly is already one of the best in the world. Personally, I don't think that defenders are worse than 10 years ago, more that the game has changed in favor of attacking and they look worse.

Anything is possible in the transfer forum. People get into such a flurry about players, who half the time they've barely seen but are convinced they're actually the best in the world and are guaranteed to be stars for us. Until the next best in the world comes around, usually in the next transfer window.

Well because they were possibly our greatest ever partnership and part of an all conquering team. What exactly have the 2 boys done, even individually? They look good but it's all potential. People might be overreaching a bit with those kind of hyperbolic statements.

But it is possible. They were possibly our greatest ever partnership does not mean they cannot be bettered. Rio and Vidic were not exactly the best defenders in the world when we bought them.

His point is it's complete guesswork based on ifs and maybes. There's no guarantees, and it's not a sure thing, but people want to make it out like it is.

i would like to see De Ligt alongside Lindelof. He is a natural leader of the defense. At Ajax he plays alongside Blind who is not soo quick but reads the game well. De ligt has been less impressive playing for Holland. This is because VDV is captain and takes the leadership role and de Ligt looks a little lost

Not to make an assumption due to your name but have you watched him a lot for Ajax? I've seen him a few times and a few times for Holland, would you agree that he could play LCB even though I know for both he's playing RCB? He just looks so two footed to me when I watch him, comfortable passing off either.

Made a note to watch him today and he’s been absolutely taken apart by Feyenoord.

I know you shouldn't judge a player, or a team on any one performance... but that was bad. Van Persie absolutely schooled him a couple of times today. I've been impressed with him previously, but I've also been impressed with Bailly previously. Would love to have him at the club, but I'm less sure about the world record fee than I was yesterday.

I guess I'll sound like an apologist but I really don't think he was to blame for much. Mazraoui, Blind and Magallan made it impossible for him. They were disgraceful.

I see that he's an absolute unit, how does that affect his speed, pace and agility?
it was a bit of an issue when he broke through at 17 and was carrying more fat on his body. He spoke about it at the time and how he was working with individual training on his acceleration and agility. I'm actually rather impressed with his speed nowadays compared to then. He's obviously got a massive frame and needs to watch out about it getting too big and heavy but the fact that he's been so conscious about that already from such a young age means I wouldn't be too concerned about it in the future. His anticipation in 1v1 with quick attackers is amazing, as is his positioning in general on defending counters, so I honestly think his pace (which again has seemed to have improved over the last two years) will never be a problem. I think he could possibly have some moments in his career where he's turned by an attacker but if I compare him to say Alderweireld, who is loved as a defender in the PL, he's actually probably got a quicker turning speed and acceleration - despite that being considered one of his weak points.

How was he vs Real Madrid?
Think he was immense. The fact that he's not even 20 is ridiculous. Both physically and composure wise he plays like he's been in the CL for years.

I rate him way higher than Frenkie to be honest. And no, they're not comparable position wise, I know.

Cheers mate, I saw couple of videos in which he dispossessed Mpabbe with some great anticipation, positioning and pacy short range burst .

I think that's the consensus. Despite being younger, De Ligt is less of a project.

True, I still think in terms of raw talent De Jong is head of him, but there's more to it than talent alone. He's more, immovable, for lack of a more suitable word.

After the De Jong signing, I didn't think that Barca would have the money to sign this lad too. However, strong stories in the last few days suggest that they are looking to sign the CB as well.

Any substance to this? Looking to Dutch and Barca fans?

P.S Maybe selling Coutinho is teh one good way to fund this...

Allegedly they took some loan recently and they're planning to finance use it to pay for De Jong and De Ligt.

Anyone who can afford him will be heavily scouting him.
Barcelona will get him if the sums add up.

Barca will be unbeatable, they will have some generational talents in their team. It is unfair.

Let Barca have him.
Spending a world record fee for a CB on an Eredivisie player is risky and the last thing we need is a player who doesn't deliver on the money we paid for him, we've goot about 5 or 6 of them in the squad already.

This is de Ligt though. He is definitely going to be top 5 CB in the next ten years or so I'm told.

We should be doing absolutely everything in our power to get him and Sancho. They are two of the best 5 teenagers in the world and their talent is undoubted. These kinds of players come along very rarely and are usually then tied down for life to whichever club they make the big move to.

We should be doing everything we can to sign him. He is still a kid but he is matured beyond his age. Mbappe is a young player but he is already world class. Players like this are very rare because you get top level output from them as well as longevity. This is exactly the type of signing we miss out on. Where were we when Dembele or Mbappe moved to new clubs? These players will be at the pinacle of football for years to come. It is silly to compare a striker to a CB but there are players like De Ligt who have the potential to be the best in the world in their position (Sancho, De Ligt, Mbappe, Dembele) and then there are players who can be top 10 (Martial etc) in their position and then the bracket below that for players like Rashford etc. If we sign De Ligt he could be the foundation of our defence for a decade.

Would love this kid to come to Liverpool. We've shown we're not afraid to spend big when the right player comes up and having him alongside VVD would be incredible. If Barca want him, they'll probably get him but we've got to be looking at him surely

I don't normally post such posts but would this work?

De gea

Lindelöf - Bailly - De ligt
Wan bissaka - sessegnon
Ndombele - Pogba
Greenwood - martial
Rashford

4 signings. 2ballplaying defenders screened by a sweeper. 2 support strikers behind a centre forward. A defensive box to box next to an attacking box to box

No place for that here I'm afraid.

We need to be on the phone to Edwin!

Surely there's no way Barca can afford him after Frenkie. They'd need to sell Coutinho and I could easily see us signing him for a position we don't really need to help them fund a signing for a position we do really need.

Put Sancho in ahead of Greenwood and Koulibaly ahead of Bailly and that is one very exciting team.

Oh well, you can only dream!

Don't understand this type of logic, you have easily the best English centre back right now in Gomes alongside Virgil, why even contemplate jeopardizing his development by adding De Ligt. Gomes if he can stay injury free will be this country's best centre half he's miles ahead of Stones.

To add I'd take De Ligt over Skriniar, we should have signed him instead of Lindlelov when we played Ajax in that same window (although Victor is improving game by game). He plays with a maturity well beyond his years, if it's a ridiculous fee that's needed pay it. Football is a mess financially, in three years time his transfer fee will seem a bargain in the current landscape.

If he is available we should be all over it, but the new contract for Jones worries me that we won't be in the market for another CB.
