Here, there, everywhere...
Haven't learned much from the three little cameos he has had with us this season. The Ajax fans assessment from the game on Wednesday seems awfully harsh. If I have to make a judgement, I'll say that he doesn't look ready yet. May be needs a loan somewhere.

From the footage and even highlights iv seen on him he really doesnt seem good enough.

I also think his hair is an issue, surely this affects his peripheral vision. He probaly also has to turn his head even farther back to check for any players behind him? Maybe im wrong about this but his hair is massive i seriously cannot fathom how it wouldnt affect his vision

It’s 15 minutes out of position in a very pressured environment against one of the best teams in the world away from home and he was playing out of position. He made a couple good tackles and had one pass he’d probably want back he was fine. Anyone using the 15 mins to claim he won’t make it should never judge young players, they’re somehow making Mourinho look jealous he tended to wait for an actual mistake before deciding someone was useless.

His dribbling in combination with his pace is very impressive from a technical POV. He was thrown into a central midfield role yesterday on the left and he's not a midfielder. I honestly believe he will be a brilliant player for us, and let's wait and see him play afew full first team games before jumping to conclusions. I honestly believe he's a better dribbler of the ball than Rashford..

In the few minutes he was on yesterday, he spent more time defending than actually attacking. But his defensive work was good to see.
Yeah I’d say close control wise he can exceed Rashford and I’ve watched games of him at youth level and he can obviously weave in and out of players.

Just saying at this moment in time, from the cameos and games I’ve seen of Gomes versus what I’ve seen of Chong - Gomes to me looks like he’s more ready for first team football - that time when Jose gave him his debut he looked excellent and has never been given a shot since.

Greenwood is obviously coming from an injury and is a unknown entity at this level but his youth performances have shown a range of skill which for me has surpassed what I’ve seen from Chong (who for me needs to add a touch more variety to his game).

Anyone writing Chong off is just being stupid - my point is merely to say we don’t have much minutes to offer young lads at this stage of the season so we have to be very selective as to who is worthy of getting those minutes and I see Gomes/Greenwood as more deserving of those in this moment in time. No doubt in training Chong must be killing it as he seems ahead of these guys at the moment.

Agreed. That said, huge credit to Ole for choosing the right moments to bring each of these lads on. Chong first instead of Mason for instance. Really allowed for each to impact those critical minutes and I can't imagine the confidence they'll be feeling now that we're thru .

Anyone writing him off after that 15 minute cameo are off their fecking rocker.

That's not to say he is going to make it here, you can't say either way on what we've seen.

Jaysus... does nobody ever learn anything on here? everyone writing Fred off weekly for the last 8 months. A 50 million pound CL proven Brazil international in his prime who’s only coming good now. Lukaku only coming good again now. Lindelof ditto. Lingard... They have played 100s of games more than chong and are still only getting into it now. This very young lad was brought on for his fresh legs and direct running on the counter. The performance tells us nothing as he had to defend a lot and he was playing out of position. He actually might not make it in the long run but it won’t have anything to do with Wednesday night. We won’t know for another few years what his true ceiling is This thread has taken a mad turn. did people expect him to come on and become Roy Keane for 20 mins?

If a young player has a cameo or game with mistakes here or there, people will come out saying how he isnt ready, just because their age. We were watching some seniors making feck ups left right and center this season, by their logic, they should be 13 years old then, what a joke.

That reminds me of debate after game vs Juventus, when people wanted JM to put youngsters in last phase on game while we were chasing the result. Those who defended JM said shit like how its mental to put them on and expect them to change a game for us due their age, it could destroy their future and similar bullshit, Ole done it in way more important game, didnt see any of them shitting their pants.

Love the way he is positive and moves forward with the ball at pace.

Can’t wait to see more of him.

Dutch media saying that Ajax are interested in hiring him next season
Loaning them Chong and TFM would be good business all round, I wouldn't sell them. I was initially going to say include Chong on loan in a deal for Sancho but that's too much of a dream.

Ideally he'll get a good amount of minutes next season with us but if we do sign a RW, I'd loan him for a season.

They don't. They are reporting on a story in the Sun that United are considering a loan and that last summer some clubs showed interest, possibly Ajax, but they held on to him. It that's true Ajax dodged a bullet.

As well as the system to filter posts of people who disagree with an opinion but have nothing to say. ;)
I already said all that was needed yesterday. Now, it just looks like you have an agenda and are trolling. Hence, why the newbie system has failed. You haven't brought anything of actual value to this thread.

That's rich, as you are the one directly attacking a person because of an opinion about a football player on a football forum.

A few salty dutch fans on here it seems
A lot of people in this thread proving why sometimes it’s not a win/win situation to throw the kids on. I mean feck me, he’s barely played at all for the first team and you’re asking him to come on, out of position and effect a game where we’ve barely threatened.

He had one run through the middle with a heavy touch and lost the ball. That’s really the only time I can remember him doing anything wrong before the penalty. Once the penalty is scored then it’s clearly a disadvantage to have him on the pitch. There’s a reason why coaches like Jose don’t trust young players. Can you imagine the pressure he’s under in that situation.

I have no idea if he’ll make it at United long term, but I’m definitely not stupid enough to suggest he won’t off the back of that.
I just filter out the brain dead posts, particularly if I can spot a particular agenda in a poster

For myself, I'm very happy these lads are getting exposure in and around the 1st team

I cant imagine it. Ajax wants their own players and not loaned players. PSV and Feyenoord might loan players but i dont think Feyenoord would want Chong after he left them.

I would like to see him play in the Eredivisie.

He didn't hide. Love his attitude. Big talent.
That's the biggest positive to take away.

In such a short time, it's hard to critique technical and tactical ability, but his mentality was just what we need. That will hopefully take him far in the game

Good post.

Regarding 'readiness' a lot has to do with supply and demand. Chong is probably ahead of Gomes in the pecking order as he plays the flanks, rather than the attacking mid role that we don't utilise as often

Saying that, I think Gomes has more of a chance at mis on Sunday. I've a feeling we will go for a diamond, with Perriera sitting behind Rashers and Rom. If there are subs, it will likely be Gomes and Greenwood coming on, unless we switch to a 433.

Hole Chong is on the bench at least as being around the 1st team will be great for his development

He was defensively confident and prevented Verratti's charge in the box cleanly, then there was that slide tackle on Di Maria where he scared the shit out of him.

Definitely helped in keeping the score within the hope of making it through.
He also played 2 terrible passes that invited PSG onto us and they could have scored.

I just don't see it with Chong, of course I hope he proves me wrong but he is way too clumsy to be a top player.

You clearly have an agenda and made a bit of a twat of yourself. Nothing to do with post count.

You've judged a player (and written him off) on a frantic 15 minute display away to PSG for feck sake.

Aye, definitely raw player and that shouldn't be a surprise to any of us. Even to this day Rashford making silly mistakes and losing ball in the easiest manner. Every player goes through the learning curve, no exceptions.

Ole's taking risk with every youngster but that trust is already rewarding at some point.

If Chongy goes the route of Macheda, Wilson, Richardson or Morrison then fine but so far he's slowly becoming part of the new generation.

Let's keep it civil shall we? There are a thousand opinions on redcafe each week that player X isn't good enough for United. You do it yourself. So post your counterargument if you don't agree with an opinion. Previously these mostly include "he only played a limited time" and "he played out of position", so we agree he played a bad game, but disagree about what it means. Your opinion is that is doesn't say much, mine that it showed he was out of his depth and not good enough, but hope to be proven wrong. That's all, so why the drama. Now we have to wait and see how Chong's career develops to see which opinion was right, at which point the entire argument will already be long forgotten.

You said that a 15 minute cameo away to PSG was 'career defining' you should agree that is absolute nonsense.

Now my opinion is he isn't going to be good enough but i have limited information and he hasn't been given any sort of chance or fully developed. You can't write him off on this limited information.

I'm probably going to get slated for this but I'm gonna stick my neck out and say I don't think he'll make it at United. I know it's too early to be sure and I can't say I am, but he seems to seriously lack intelligence while on the ball. His speed will only get him so far.

Hopefully someone quotes this one day with a row of laughing emojis.

I'll begin the slating.

Just why exactly? How many games have you seen him live? Do you know that he's not even 20 years old and footballing intelligence is built up with experience?

Why do I see more and more people on this forum pass out extreme judgements on your youth players even before they get a decent run of games in the first team?

Again, I hope I'm wrong. But in the times I've seen him play, he excels when he has acres of space to run into. While not impossible, will be difficult in Prem. Yes, I agree football intelligence does get built up with experience. But there should be atleast some already there now. Sure, not as much as a 27/28 year old, nowhere near. But he looks liked her dribble into a brick wall before realising he's probably overdone it.
