You must of seen the wrong game. 3-5-2 when attacking and a 5-3-2 shape when defending.
Don’t think so. Acuña was a winger tonight, he’s just a completely different player to Diaby so the shape of the team becomes versatile.

I guess you can call it a 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2, we’ve played like this before though. It was nothing new.

Not really. Acuña was a winger tonight, he’s just a more defensive one.

Not with Keizer we have not played this way tonight. Was very dynamic then the stagnant 4-3-3 we have been playing all season. Also having a striker partner that was mobile up front by Dost allowed Dost to have more space for better movement.

Yes on Whoscored it was 3x4x2x1, reason why I asked.

Not normal for us to score 3 goals and to not concede. Anyway I hope we rest some players against Villareal because that tie for me is lost and we are going into Funchal to play Maritimo. Still 4 points behind Braga ffs. This club is cursed.
Was very shocked and happy for the tactical change and hope carries on with it too see how it does. Trust me I am just as. surprised we got a clean sheet was a weird game. Illori was great very solid Wendel was immense and Bruno Fernandes was again showing why he is easily the best player in the league. Dont know why all the fans in the stadium celebrated like this win mattered we are still 4th.

Normal for a club who unfortunately barely wins anything relevant outside a few cups here or there. I wanted us to make a good run on the Europa League but unfortunately Villareal seems that they are recovering their confidence. Today they smashed Sevilla 3:0. Always said they have a better squad than it looks from the table.

Looking forward to Porto-Benfica this evening. I'm personally hoping to see Oliver Torres get some minutes today but I'm not holding my breath.

Gutted to see Nakajima leave Portimonense, also bit surprised at the fee (40 million euros).
Anyone know if there's any truth in rumours its a temporary move and he'll end up at PSG?
I was gutted, too. Especially as he left for the Qatar Stars League. He's so much better than that.

Sorry to say but Pepe didn’t improved Porto at all. Militao and Felipe is the best Cb duo. He is miles away from what he was imo.

Honestly Benfica deserved to win and they have the best squad. Rui Vitória was so shit that he was able to ignore Samaris, the rare moments Felix played with him only as a winger.

Pepe has been a huge disappointment.

No clue how the national team will do now without any good CBs. It’s going to be our downfall in 2020

We have much better players as a whole than we had 5 years ago. Our youth NTS are constantly introducing new players. Will we have a CB like Pepe, Carvalho or Couto in the past? No.

For me much worse is our total inability to produce top Goalkeepers or classic strikers but that is something who can be mitigated with some adaptations. Our future is better not worse. I don’t want to rely on the quality of CR, Pepe or sometimes Nani or Moutinho. I am clearly optimistic about that.

Ruben Dias
Imo he will never reach the level of a Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho, Andrade, Couto, maybe not even a Jorge Costa but honestly don't see no reason to panick.

I mean in 2014 we were facing Germany on Brazil with a midfield made by Veloso, Moutinho and a washed up Meireles, with Hugo Almeida upfront or João Pereira as fullback.

That was reason for panick, not if Ronaldo or Pepe aren't at their peak.

I follow almost every youth NT here on Portugal and I can almost guarantee that we aren't far from the same level of those teams who won the 1989 and 1991 under 20 WC's. Are we perfect? No. Do we lack some players on certain areas or more specialized training at youth level? Yes. Am I pessimistic? Absolutely not.

What we can't demand is to produce the same number of players as a Germany, Brazil, France, Spain, or England. We simply lack enough players, I don't know why we should panick honestly. Of course if we miss the next Euros everyone will say its because Ronaldo or Pepe aren't at their top. I don't agree with that. :)

Ruben Dias
He’s ok at best although he’s impressed recently. I’ll be happy if he reaches the levels Bruno Alves did with the national team.

There’s a clear crisis when it comes to centrebacks in this generation. And the usual lack of quality at striker. Usually we have poor fullbacks and great CBs, this time it seems like it will be the other way around.

This happens as we finally seem to be upping quality in midfield. Neves, Bernardo and Cancelo are showing up just as Ronaldo, Pepe and Moutinho will start fading. It’s good that it’s happening but also very frustrating that they weren’t born a few years earlier. Neves for Veloso, Bernardo for Danny and Cancelo for João Pereira and we’d have been golden.

I agree with @SCP when he says the quality in general is getting better, I think we’ll become a much more balanced team in the future rather than have half the team be great and the other half bringing everything down. I just worry we won’t see the elite quality we’ve been used to with Portuguese players being up there as the best in the world (Figo, Deco, Ronaldo). I don’t see any young player capable of reaching those levels and I think that aside from elevating the general quality we also would need to produce some stars to keep the results and status we’ve been building up.

Its a possibility instead having 1 or 2 players like that we will see 4 or 5 who maybe can be top 5 of the world on their positions without being the best in the world.

Its just a different way to look into it. You know probably where you are on the North as I know here South even medium to small clubs who work as feeder clubs to supply the big clubs today work much better.

We will not have 1 or 2 superstars to bail us out. I agree we don't have a great number of CB's but I am more worried with the lack of good GK's and the lack of specific training for number 9's, its all second strikers, false 9's or wingers converted into that area. It is what it is but stay positive. Of course in the end we will always have ups and downs.

Is Adrian really still the starting striker for Porto or do they have loads of injuries? He was complete trash for Depor last year.

Thank you guys for your detailed opinions :)

We will try to help with Dalot :)

Will be interesting to see if Joel Pereira will get a call-up for the U21 squad next week.
I suspect Joel being born in 96 probably will not be called for the next ones.

@SportingCP96 The other day you were asking about talent on the Academy.

Renewed his contract recently and trained with the first team under Keizer on Friday. 16 years old. Did this today.

I meant to ask you about him. Never heard of him until I saw the news he trained with the first team though I figured was because of the contract renewal.

What is his play style and who does he remind you of? I am assuming he is a winger? How high is his potential?

Winger. On the Academy the guys I know there they tell me at worse the same as Rafael Leão if not higher. This is the first real talented generation we have since those from the Next Gen.

Another player who I really like who is from the 2001 age group is Félix Correia. The issue here is how we will develop this players because we don't have the B team now, only the under 23. And other players from the 2002 age group to watch are the GK and the CB's, Nuno Mendes the left back also good, and the midfielders ok.

In general this age group in Portugal looks on the same level as the 99. Lets see if they get the qualification for the under 17 Euros who starts this month. Keep in mind Joelson is from 2003 and is playing against players 1 year older than him, so this with the fact he was called to train with the first team means at least inside the club they believe on his potential.

I know of the two center backs Quaresma and Tiago Ferreira both look very promising. I am going to be keeping an eye on Joelson.

Seems to have a lot of potential and his ability cut inside and shoot is very good for his age. The video says he is left footed but he is almost certainly right footed. He does not seem to have as much technical ability as Gelson but he seems to have a better end product.

From what I remember from Gelson with 16 I can almost guarantee Joelson is miles ahead.

Of course this will all depend on how will we develop him, if next season he will be promoted to the under 19's or under 23's. I was against the end of the B team. Better wait and see, one thing is youth level another is professional football. One day I thought Paim would be better than Ronaldo.

No audio, a guy I know did this small sample to show you.

If you have Sporting TV you can see him playing for the under 17's under João Couto.

Front what I have been reading and seeing the 11 players who recently renewed contract have some good quality and talent. Joelsom seems to be the best of the bunch and I am going to try to catch some youth games. I really have been hearing good things about the centerbacks. Max had a hell of a game the other night and hope he gets a chance to play surely he won’t do worse then Renan or salin.

Keizer recently called up Diogo sousa as well. My hope for this team is we revamp the squad and have a young team mixed with experience for next season. Promote some young academy players and have 2 on the bench flipping between the under 23 team. We can develop these guys into good players by getting good experience and maybe building something good for the future I think about this even more after seeing what Ajax has done. Mix youth wirh surgical signings of QUALITY. This in turn will lower the wages and keep relative quality in hopes to getting European money. Build from the bottom up and set a foundation with these young players.

My thought process is if they are good enough they are old enough. I remember Jesualdo promoted 5 youth players to the first team from that really good B team we had and results improved a lot.

@SportingCP96 This one is from 2001 age group and the most talented imo we have there. There is another player who plays with him on the under 19's from 2000 who looks interesting, Bernardo Sousa.

Regarding the rest you mentioned, from the players we have next season for the first team I would give a chance to Maximiano for GK, and Bragança for midfielder, but jonestly can't see him playing as a 6, he is too skinny. Maybe he can do do the Wendel role.

This and we need to see if we don't let players like Félix Correia or Bernardo Sousa leave on a free contract.

Honestly on a ideal world would sell Wendel and Dost and keep Bruno Fernandes. But hey, we have nice news.

Who would have thought? We just need to get piss drunk and money will fall from the sky.

Haven't seen enough of him but finishing is woeful. But that can be trained I think next season we have to revamp the whole thing 10 youth academy players in the first team. Starters and bench the remaining players are surgical signings.

Also Plata arrived today I hope he is as good as they say.

You can't judge the finishing based on a few minutes. Beside that he is more a natural right winger or offensive midfielder. Lets wait and see.

I just want this season to end. The last "hope" we have is the TACA and that will not happen.

It is all a joke. Also did you see Max did not get called up after his last performance ? Absolute joke. Our only striker called up was Luiz phelipe why not call up one of strikers form the Sub 23 who have been in decent form and give them a shot ? I don’t understand ....

Tbh nearing the end of the season is understandable Renan or Salin remain ahead, but next season I want him as our starting keeper because I don't believe more loaning players to midtable clubs in Portugal is the answer.

Sporting Clube De Portugal 2019/2020 Mock squad.

So after a careful evaluation of the team I have come up with what I think Sporting should do this coming off season. The idea is too get rid of all the dead wood in the team and the guys whose heads and hearts are not at the club.

This mock team has youth in it speed energy and lots of hungry players it is also a cheap team with players made in Sporting famed academy which is the way to go while also making a profit in the summer with the selling of excess players. Anyways here we go.

OUT: Bas Dost, Marcos Acuña, Sebastian Coates, Bruno Gaspar, Lumor, Gudelj, Diaby, Salin, Luiz Phellype, Rodrigo Battaglia, Jefferson, Petrovic, Misic, Jonathan Silva, and André pinto.

IN: Ivanildo, Matheus Perreira, Joao Palhinha, Domingos Duarte, Luis neto ( apparently we already signed him), Thierry Correia (promoted), Joao Oliveira (Promoted), Bruno Paz (promoted), Gelson Dala, Iuri Medeiros, Mama Balde.

SPORADIC FIRST TEAM PLAYERS PROMTED FROM THE ACADEMY: Felix Correia, Joelson (?), Gonzalo Plata. These are 3 young players who can be played in the Taça da Liga and in the early rounds of the Taça de Portugal. They will mainly be playing in the U-23 team but will get minutes under their belt in the first team to be able to slowly integrate them in the following season

SIGNINGS: Two Strikers, 1 CDM, 1 left back, and 1 GK. All of these signings have to be calculated signings who will add QUALITY to the team

This would be a cheap team made up FIFTEEN YOUTH ACADEMY PLAYERS in the first team AND the bench as well as the reserves.

OTHER NOTES: With all the players sold Sporiting should make an excess of 60M with the players coming in 85% of them don’t cost a dime as they are youth players or players who have been Loaned. The other 15% will be the signings I mentioned above nonetheless Sporting make a PROFIT. The next thing it note is Sporting improve the quality of their team substantially while getting the books in order and developing young talent and bringing the focus back to the youth academy. Max will be the designated number 2 goalkeeper and will play all cup games and non important European games. Bruno Fernandes gets a renewed contract with all the money coming in and becomes the highest paid player in the team and we get to keep the best player in the league. Jermey Mathieu gets a 1 year contract extension since he is 35 years old he has no transfer value and is better suited to stay in the team and be paired with one of the young centerbacks and provide leadership, Knowlege, and experience. Coates has some Transfer value since he is an international as does Acuña and both are relatively young so they will provide a good transfer fee as will Bas Dost who is a proven goal scorer.

This would be my idea for the 2019/2020 season I would love to get other opinions and feedback I think this is something that can be done with relative ease with a competent board and will give Sporting the chance to grow and reap the benefits in the future.

@SportingCP96 I was watching on Porto Canal our under 19's at Olival. We lost 5:1.

Jesus, Lima is atrocious. I went to watch Félix Correia and was really impressed with a Porto player son of Jorge Silva former Boavista player. Fábio Silva, only 16 scored 3 vs us.

I don't like to hype players based on youth level performances but they have the hell of a striker project there. Regarding us, its impressive how a generation who won the under 15's and 17's is completely stagnated, without orientation and a incompetent manager.

Sorry to say, I know you are a big supporter of BDC and I was even if not with the same intensity as you. But the job they have done on our Academy needs a big boost and revamp. He lost his head giving everything to JJ and they completely ignored what was happening at youth level.

We have nice prospects on our under 17's but we need to change totally the way our youth coaches work there. Better not expect much talent coming in on the next 2 to 3 years to the first team, what I saw today was atrocious to say the least.

@Sean_RedDevil You know. :)

Watched that one no problem. They will face Spurs, certainly won’t be so easy for them. Fábio Silva looks a prospect but it’s soon to know how he will do when he starts playing against professionals.

Silas looks the best coach in the league outside the top 3 along with Luis Castro I hope Sporting is playing attention. Title race wide open now lots of dropped points recently. 1 or 2 more games like that and Braga are right back in the mix. Worth noting both Benfica and Porto still have to go play Braga away from home I believe.
