Unfortunately Ed has made a rod for his own back with the Sanchez deal, even if we manage to offload him this summer the players/agents negotiating future contracts will use it as a benchmark.Whilst DDG's agility and reflexes are great his distribution and kicking are woeful, hope he remains with us but we must not cave in to his demands.

That’s what I’m talking about. Now let’s talk about how we spend the money saved on his contract

I do think this contract situation needs sorted out, as it is like a cloud hanging over him at the moment.

Don't players usually perform better when they are angling for an improved contract?

Although he did play well after the Madrid saga. He's like the opposite to most players.

I love DDG and hope we get him signed. One niggling worry though is imagining what kind of keeper he will become in his mid-to-late 30s (or whenever his physical skills begin to decline.) With someone like Van De Sar or Buffon, this was less of a worry because he was such a commanding presence in other ways (imagine it was the same with Schmeichel - I didn't see too much of him.) But De Gea has never been commanding in the way those keepers have; he's been a marvel of nature due to his reflexes. Once they decline, you do wonder how quickly his performances will drop off.

Reflexes and quick feet cannot really be trained.

But De Gea can work on having a greater presence. Time to sign on him who is still relatively young for a keeper when he can bring in all his skills and experience in the premier league and Euro to good use.

He’s a great goalkeeper and is/has been the worlds best, but if he wants more than 300k a week then let him go. Although I can’t see where he would go on those kind of wages. The Spurs game aside where he was truly magnificent, his form this season has been indifferent.

I just wonder if he wanted to go then where would he go? Can’t see Real chomping on the bit after his display in the WC, so who else would be prepared to give him the money he wants?

He currently earns 4 x more than Romero, who is rated the best reserve keeper in the prem. Is he really worth 7 x more the Romero?

I’m a massive fan of De Gea but I do think the club has to draw a line somewhere. We made a big mistake with the Sanchez wage bill, which in turn caused problems with the likes of Pogba. The club has to stop the spiralling wages. Renewing contracts are becoming a nightmare.

In total agreement with this, Sanchez was such a big mistake in multiple ways and that deal (even though most of us thought it was decent) is going to keep hurting us for a while yet.

My exact sentiments as well. While I’m still hanging on and hoping Sanchez can eventually succeed here, his effect on the team has been detrimental both on and off the field. Setting a precedence with his wages just causes us more long term problems.

How often have we not wondered why our colleagues or peers earns more than us when we are more capable or doing more work? It’s just human nature, and I don’t blame De Gea. But he has to rationalize things, that there aren’t many better paymasters out there as well.

DDG will be on a free transfer coming end Dec 2019.

Either we sign him on a new contract or we have to spend another 80m on a new Keeper and paying 250k per week on the new keeper.

Another alternative is to sell DDG at a lower cost like what happened to Courtois where he moved for only 35 mil as it was his last year at Chelsea so DDG will cost about 40m considering he is older.

1st way: sell for 40m, buy 80m + 250k per week for 5 years.

2nd way: 350k per week for 5 years.

What's his alternative to us? Barca/Juve?

Can they even afford wages like that on top of what they're burning away on wages now?

PSG seems realistic but unambitious

Wonder how he would feel if he left and ended up being managed by Jose again

Barca has Ter Stegen who is on De Geas level, Juve cant afford his wages.

I think his only competitive option is PSG but I don’t think he would want to play in that shitty league.

The arithmetic is simple, divide 40m by 5 year by 52 weeks then equal 150K.

I would say offer him 300K plus 50K for every clean sheet, DDG has the opportunity to earn 400K if in luck but otherwise stay awake all the time.

He is okay. Probably on the level of Kepa and Leno, but not as good as City's and Liverpool's keeper (or even Lloris, not counting this season).
Well indeed and that's my issue, we cant go from having one of the best in the world to a 'average' one. If De Gea was to go we'd have to try for someone like Oblak unless we want to see a drop in quality

Fully agree. And if you add the transfer fee, agent fee, signing on fee plus a very high salary for Oblak (even though it might be a lower salary than what De Gea is asking), probably is not worth it. He is a bit younger though.

PSG will be his only suiters.

Barcelona, Madrid, Chelsea, Liverpool, City, Spurs, Bayern have all great keepers. Arsenal, Juventus, Athletico can't afford him.

PSG need to replace Buffon. If I'm being honest, if he really is trying to screw us on wages and if they came with €100m or something stupid (it's PSG after all) I'd accept it. No keeper is worth more than he's on at the moment.

In the above €100m example I'd use it to try sign Oblak as the replacement. I'm sure he wouldn't refuse the 250k De Gea is currently on.

Barcelona and Real no way. I can see PSG, Juve and maybe Bayern try to sign him.

I dunno Courtois hasn't pulled up any tree's at Real this season, been worse than Navas has been for them so I can see them going for De Gea.

PSG would be the obvious one though, especially with Buffon's age (they clearly dont fancy their other keeper at the highest level)

Courtois wasn't good for them so far but still a very good GK. They have Navas too and now Zidane is back , I can see him back as starter...or Courtois gets better. Zidane has won all with Navas as GK. I think Juve needs a good GK and even Bayern, Neuer isn't that good these days and had some injury issues.

Have I missed something? Why are people here searching suitors for Dave and alternative options for us?

This forum has a habit of wishing our big players away with some sort of shared, **** mentality.

PSG or Juve come to mind, especially if he walks on a free.

I think this will all hinge on what we can do with Sanchez.

If we’re able to get even half wis wages off the books I see DDG signing a new deal.

It's scary money for a goalkeeper.

Some of the long range goals into him recently make me question if he's even worth 500k a week. Where he didn't even dive towards it. And I don't care if Ole said it's a Brazilian shot that curls. When you pay 500k you expect a save.

I know he had a good game v Spurs, but come on.
