When SAF was supposed to retire in 2002, who was your favorite successor?

Was only 12/13 so probably couldn't even name a top available manager at the time. I don't think I believed it would happen anyway and that he would change his mind.

Martin O'Neill :nervous:

In my defence, I was like 13.

I remember Wenger is favorite to replace him. Wenger is the perfect successor to SAF if we are looking at the long term. He could've been more successful with us than he was with Arsenal.

O’Neill was the one I remember getting the most push. Sven’s name seemed to come later if I remember rightly.

Hitzfield, Lippi or Capello. Didn’t want Sven as he probably have put Scholes on the wing or dropped him for Butt.

Luiz Felipe Scolari for me - the good version not the crap Chelsea version.

Interesting that so many Serie A names were being floated around. Especially when you consider how we all feel about so-called pragmatic coaches these days.

A reflection of the then recent dominance of Serie A? Or was it felt that we could do with some defensive stability being instilled in our team?

As I recall I thought Sven sounded like a good manager for United

Serie A was definitely the top league in Europe back then.
Honestly, we were incredibly reckless and naive in Europe, it was end to end stuff and were completely outclassed and out-thought by Bayern and Madrid.
Definitely thought we should be more tactical and cautious in Europe, which is exactly what happened between 07 and 11.

Yeah I’ve often heard this mentioned, and wondered if it was anything to do with the names being bandied around. I guess in the end it had to have come from within the club, as SAF himself went after Queiroz for that very purpose.

I really can’t remember. I was in shock.

I probably said someone like Sven. It wouldn’t have gone well.

I do wonder how we would've done if Martin O'Neil was appointed manager back then. I'm pretty sure it would've ended in Fergie coming back within a year.

People keep saying Sven. But why?

He didn’t know how to use Scholes properly for England. Would have played Butt ahead of him in midfield and I wouldn’t have been surprised if Scholes would have left if Sven was in charge.

I wanted Lippi. You have to remember there was no Roman or sheikhs, you expected the league to be a toss up with Arsenal every year and the challenge was continental football.

Never understood the love for SGE.

I was 18. It was so unthinkable that Fergie would retire that I sort of chose to be in denial and never had anyone in mind. Thank god he backtracked.
