It all reminds me of when Keano complained to "thick Mick" about poor training conditions in the lead up to Japan World Cup.

Finally he walked out, backed by United Fans, and slated by anti-United Fans...
I didn't fecking back him nor did the vast majority of Utd fans I knew

It was mentioned on radio yesterday that the owner or chairman interferes in team affairs and that he was warned not to take the job. That he has done it with previous managers. Is that true?

Seems like he left on a point of principle which is ok with me but like Gary Nev he did no due diligence on the situation he was heading into and therefore MUST do the walk of shame for 2.5 years before he's allowed back.

I was at Boundary Park for 3 hours and couldn't wait to get away. Scholes is a legend for having lasted a month there.

Completely justified to quit due to those conditions. Doing it via Whatsapp is unprofessional though even if the owner probably deserved it. Anyway this should make him take into account of the involvement of boards/owners the next time he decides to criticise other managers.

I'm not really buying this line of argument. By the same logic you could make the same case that Maradona, Pele and Messi cannot manage any team because there is a gulf between their unique abilities and those of their teams. It's not as if he's managing the local pub team here - Oldham are still a full-time professional outfit comprised of players superior to 95% of those playing the game at any kind of organised level. The difference between them and players operating a couple of divisions higher is unlikely to be down to winning mentality, work ethic and ambition. It's much more likely to be a result of superior technique, quicker decision making and better physical genetics.

Nonetheless, this stint doesn't really prove anything. All it shows that Oldham is a basket case of a club and Scholes remains unproven as a manager.
fair point about the other ex players.

Here we go, the mechanics of him quitting is just about to become the main focus of discussion.

Anyway, Ole's offered him a job.
Well that didn’t say anything about him actually being offered a job, just that Ole invited him to have a chat, but in general I would really like if Scholes would come back as a coach. I think he has a lot of knowledge he can pass on to a midfielder.

I noticed Fred hanging around the edge of the D in very Scholes-esque fashion in one of our recent games. Damn, Scholesy's that good of a coach the players take his methods on before he's even started working with them

cnuts the lot who are ridiculing him. Also, hindsight has shown us that he was right about everything as a pundit - from playing Pogba in a 3 to LVG philosophy and Jose's football. Every fecking thing!

So Scholes was correct that Pogba would play better in a 3 and that LVG and Mourinho didn't play the "United" way and you think that makes him a qualified football genius? Have a day off mate.

I think the majority of people on here could of told you that about Pogba, LVG and Jose, doesnt mean we should all get managerial posts. End of the day Scholes, despite being a good player, has always been a personality vacuum and will never have what it takes to make a top manager. He's looked at Gerrard and Lampard making solid starts to their managerial careers and decided to have a go but unfortunately Paul Scholes the manager, just like Paul Scholes the footballer, does not have the ability of Gerrard and Lampard.

He got sacked because he was shit, not because he chose to leave. If he wasn't happy with the arrangements he could have resigned in the Summer.

Scholes didn't get sacked, he resigned.
Yep I'm aware and never disputed that. In fact my original point was that Scholes spent ages slagging off Jose for not getting his own way with signings etc and then the 1st sign of things getting bad he quit his job. Not a great look for him. I'm not a fan of Jose but he gave it a bit of a better go than Scholes did.

Oldham are in the shit and instead of the owner actually doing anything about it he hire's a legend of the game and Oldham fan to keep the fans happy and inspire a few wins then carries on being the exact same arsehole he was before.

Sounds like the mistake was letting his heart rule his head in taking the job in the first place.

There is only one major reason why this has not worked for him.

He does not have the personality to be a manager. He might have the knowledge but you need a hell lot more than that to be a manager.

Scholes is a quiet guy compared to the others, incredibly skillful but he does not have the personality of a Gerrard or Lampard or Ole or Keane.

Good to have as a player, but can’t see him being a commanding manager.

No of course it doesn't mean he will excel as a manager, it only means that he was right as a pundit so people berating him for him being a negative pundit need to again have a look at what he was saying.

Sounds like a combination of shit working conditions, a total imbecile of an owner and also Scholes' total unsuitability to be a manager in the first place.

He's the worst most reluctant footballer. Like he's cursed by his genius. God knows what he'd have done if he wasn't a footballer.

Im not buying it and I feel its a massive cop out. Scholes has contacts at Oldham, he loves that club and follows it closely, surely he knew how the owner operates. He just got overwhelmed by it all, 7 fecking games into his tenure, embarrassing.

Looking at the progress of replies in this thread. Did everyone in page 1-8 ignore the part of the statement Paul initially made about blaming his work condition? Why the feck is this article on the owner changing people’s view? Paul literally said it wasn’t what he signed up for in his initial statement...

The owner made him promises then went back on his word. He was lied to and left. How is this difficult to understand?

He won't be the first nor the last club owner to do that. Just how extreme was it? Many managers deal with issues like this all the time. I think Scholes just went into it head first. He knows the club, he should've known it wasn't going to be a good fit but he probably had to experience it himself.
