No price, basically no games shown and no word on the required internet speed?
Not really convinced.

That's a hard, hard pass from me. feck cloud gaming. feck esports. feck gaming as a service in general and seriously feck jade "EA" raymond. I've used nvidias cloud gaming service as it came free with my shield and it needs a 50 Meg line to be stable. I can't get anymore than 30 and it's not very good at all. I can't imagine this being any better. And I can't imagine I want to pay a subscription to play games I have to buy.

I love gaming but it's turned into such shit show mostly focused on a constant stream of cash than actually being fun. This screams the death nail of gaming as I know and love it. Hope it fails just like onlive did.

Why does the middle of the controller look like the face of the gingerbead man from Shrek.

I wonder will they actually invest in production studios or just buy out existing ones like Microsoft did?

Also, I think they're only getting into gaming as they seen how much games like Fortnite are making. They could have got into gaming years ago.

Interesting but I’m sceptical.

If they get it running it could be a game changer. I’ll believe it when I see it.

The infrastructure probably didn't exist to facilitate high quality, streamed gaming years ago - either within Google themselves or with the connections available to your average Joe. I'd say Google intend to disrupt the gaming industry in the same way Netflix have the television market.

I just can't see it happening. Streaming only? I'm sure they'll get a big chunk of the casual market but I don't think see the big three being too concerned.

I’m not sure they’d get a big chunk. I’m expecting this with the specs to be the most expensive console when it’s released. It will cost more than a pro and X.

The Xbox and PS4 most importantly have some sort of infrastructure and loyal fan bases. People ain’t going to leave their psn buddies to play on their google accounts.

I was expecting this to be some sort of cheap streaming device. Can they have a impact on gaming? Well they need a portfolio first. It’s nothing like Netflix. With movies you can buy the rights to old movies etc and then you can show them to stream.

Where as with video games you can’t just buy the rights to old video games. Google need some portfolio and back catalogue. The other three console manufactures do. Nintendo are sitting on a gold mine.

Sony have also tried this streaming gaming and it’s never worked. I wouldn’t want to play a FPS on a streaming device. Google should do it better, but they’d need a lot of games.

I was under the impression there was no console?

I thought the whole point of streaming games is that you paid for the subscription and then could play the game on anything with a screen and Google Chrome?

I don't know why you've got console in the title and saying console here. Google said there's no set box. It is streaming only through any device with a Chrome browser.

This has been coming for a long time. The PS3 could (before Sony removed it) play PS Now games.

PS5 and NeXbox will be the last console generation. Why spend £350 on a console when you could spend £350 on a 3 years subscription to PS Now / Google Stadia / Etc

Also - don't be surprised if Google Stadia comes to Xbox One. Microsoft are desperate for reasons for people to come back to Xbox and it would put Google Stadia in millions of homes. There is a deal to be done.

Yay! More mobile phone games with microtransactions passed off as console games!

But seriously, it's of absolutely no surprise. It won't work short term, but this is what the likes of Sony, EA, Valve and MS have been working towards for a long time.

It begins. The subscription hell.

I'm very curious about the business model. Let's say in the future there aren't consoles. Would Red Dead 3 make more money being cloud only? What cut would the devs get from the streaming store? I'm sure google and the rest have looked at the numbers but it's very interesting.

Anyway, the times when we won't own the games we pay for, is fast approaching.

Not convinced enough people have good enough internet to stream the 4K 60fps they’re claiming consistently yet considering you won’t be able to buffer for obvious reasons. Input lag could be interesting too.

Although I pretty much only play Nintendo games so don’t think I’ll be getting involved anyway.

Do we own them now?

The Spyro Reignited trilogy comes with 1.2 games on the disk, the rest as a download. In a zombie apocalypse, if you find a PS4 and a Spyro game, and have a working generator and TV.. you can fire it all up and play 1/3rd of the game?

Good point. For the most part I think we still own them but as you say, without internet there would be trouble for quite a few titles when it comes to actually playing them.

The control over developers and the end of the true indie scene is what I'll lament most. When everything goes full streaming, there'll be no place for independants to release and only a few providers capable of pushing the huge amount on bandwidth this will need for millions of players. Not thatbit'll go away, it'll just be heavily controlled. Worst of all though, development teams will be even less stable than they already are.

Let's also not forget latency, connection and issues of whether or not the streamed games will run at decent framerates. Also what sort of connection will we need if this could push the 144hz I'm accustomed to?

On the plus side, despite the likes of Ea and ms being terrible with developers, Netflix have shown that they are willing to invest heavily in a lot of varied ideas and bringing back fan classics, so maybe in the future we'd get some more of that in gaming. Who knows.

I'm sure some will be really happy with this, after all no big machine under the tv and big game expenses will appeal. Each to their own I guess.

That controller is fecking cheap and awful looking to boot!

Most people who can afford a 4K Console and TV will also be able to afford 80mb+ broadband and we’re looking at the future here so 5g will chew up those sorts of bandwidths.

It’ll be the last generation of consoles too. You’ll never need to upgrade your hardware, new games with new demands will be backed by the required servers.

It’s absolutely inevitable that this will take over. Eventually when the market settles we will be paying a nominal fee and have a Netflix style library of games available to us.

In 5-10 years I could see this being viable but we’re not there at the moment, I dont think we have the infrastructure to support it. I’m in the U.K. so it’s not too bad but aren’t most people in the US still on data caps whilst Australian and Canadian internet is trash?

This is the future though. The thought of spending hours downloading and installing games already feels old fashioned.

What uses more data:

Streaming 10 hours of video at 1080p or downloading 35 GB of data to download the game? (The order 1886 here)

I'd say for most games, it will use far less data to stream than to play locally. Even if you have the Blu Ray, the patches are as big as the games in a lot of cases.

So then the question becomes one about latency and throughput.

Also - I'm excited and hopefully this type of technology will see the end to cheating.

Cheating in online PVP matches

Cheating in speed-running.

Cheating in loot boxes even.

I’d be very interested to see how the latency fairs. It’s a whole new dynamic having a centralised server doing all the calculations and rendering and then broadcasting simultaneously to connected terminals. I actually have no clue how that will compare.

Shouldn't this just be the price of a controller then? Why do I get the feeling they'll be ripping you off at some point? Either now or if it actually takes off.

Cheers, can’t watch with sound now so I’ll check it out in the morning but maybe before work considering how the title shortens on my iPhone...

From that video

Looks playable if not ideal by any means for fast-twitch games.

That was using wifi on a pixlebook though

Thats after taking putting display lag back into Xbox One X and the rest as they couldn't take it out of the Stadia result

Split screen games could surprisingly benefit from it. Rather than forcing both players to stay together or even stay in the same game, they could have separate instances of the game running and go as far as wide as they like.

Whether that is a splitscreen battle royale / zombie game where players can travel across a huge map, or a split screen mario/spyro like game with a giant castle to explore, or an base building game where one player is attacking other bases for resources whilst the other defends their own... Etc.

I'm totally uninterested about it in any sense other than a technical one. The updated "Steam Link" app means I can play games from my own PC over wi-fi/4G anywhere I want, and I've 100% total control over my hardware for things like mods, custom files, etc.

Shouldn't this just be the price of a controller then? Why do I get the feeling they'll be ripping you off at some point? Either now or if it actually takes off.
No because they still have to maintain & power high-powered gaming setups as well as the CDN's to connect to (potentially) millions of customers.

I like the idea of a Netflix style subscription based gaming platform. However, streaming games through a cloud? We haven't got the connections here for it. Also, is this inherently connected to multiplayer games, or has nothing at all to do with the type of game?

I don't mind pre-donwloading the game, it took 1-2 hours at most these days, better than constantly streaming content (at this rate of infrastructure isn't feasible and prone to disruption).

What it looks to me is a "joystick" for a tablet. We can do pretty much everything with a tablet these days, the only limit is the bandwidth.

At the end of the day it'll depend on what games available in it, if they have games that I want to play it doesn't matter if it's xbox or ps1.

Nothing to do with the type of game. Just think of it as the worlds longest HDMI cable. Your "console" is in a Google server center somewhere, and you control it like you would the UI of your <insert favourite console here>.
