We need to stop comparing him with Ronaldo.

I doubt a 21 y.o Ronaldo would have been able to carry us against Barca in a team like this (and without Fergie as well). But Ronaldo's decision making at 21 was better than most 26 y.o. He's reached maturity faster than most, even Fergie said it himself.

I can see Rashford improving but let's not use younger version of Ronaldo as an excuse for him.

Honestly, the reactions to balanced criticism of Rashford and his form here do smack of hysteria, when you have to revert to calling anyone who doesn't agree with you a 'pathetic clown'.

Think if criticisms of the way he's playing mean that you end up feeling like an 8 yr old who's just been told Santa isn't real, it's really only you who needs to 'give your head a wobble'.

I don't think the majority of posters who agree with the OP here are writing him off. The point is more about the management of him as a player. Of course it's ok to have off days and a run of bad form, especially as a young player. You don't deserve to be told 'you will never make it here' as a result. The problem is the club's approach to him has been to treat him as if he is a bona fide superstar already, despite recent performances showing that his average level over a number of games balances out as being... very mediocre. He was dreadful in last night's game. Dreadful apart from the penalty and a shot against PSG. Dreadful against Wolves. I'm sorry that pointing this out might make you feel like someones just shat in your cocopops, but what are they supposed to do, apologise for having eyes?

Regarding the contract tabloid news, it might just be rumours, but i would bet that a lot of that is being fuelled by Rashford's agents. Even in the unlikely case it isn't, it's unfortunate that this hype is out there and I truly believe it has gone to his head. It's not the end of the world. It doesn't mean we have to fire him out of a cannon into the sun. It's entirely reasonable there are suggestions that he needs to be benched for his own good and let know exactly what the standards of his recent performances are, and what is required from him in his performances with regards to simple aspects of the game. How is that even offensive?

All indications from the club are, 'you are the main man', 'you are undroppable'. Performances aren't matching up to this. I get it he's young and learning, but for now bench him. Coach the bad habits out of him. And certainly don't go giving him a bumper contract ie. anything over 120k because he simply hasn't earned it. OP is spot on, a reality check is needed.

Ok toys out of the pram in 3... 2... 1....

The evens of the 06WC were a great accelerator, the whole of away stadiums booing him developed his tenacity. It was a great season with the contrat at OT where he was so loved.

I wish Sanchez and Lukaku clicked. They would have had an incredible impact on Rashford.

For me, Rashford should be on our bench. Waiting, hungry, ready to come in and make a difference and claim his place. I saw that when he first joined the first team, when Jose was rotating him with Martial and when he was understudying Zlatan was here.

I like Rashford, he's got potential there's no doubt about that! However, this is Manchester United and Rashford at the moment is not good enough to lead the line if we have aspirations to challenge for the title.

If you look at the firepower of the 5 teams above us in the league, they literally all have proven top class forwards that can get at least 20+ goals EVERY season (Prem);
Man City: Aguero, Jesus, sterling, maybe Sane
Liverpool: Salah, maybe Mane
Spurs: Kane
Arsenal: Lacazette, Aubayang
Chelsea: Hazard, maybe Higuain if given a full season
Man Utd: Lukaku as a no.9 scored about 15 goals in his first season and he is not even close to that figure this season. Rashford has got 10 goals this season. Martial has scored 10 goals with less appearances and to be honest has shown he's the most clinical - Their goals do not suggest they are better then any of the above players in my opinion.

Rashford will come good but it will take more time. We need to be patient. We have other areas of the pitch to attend to, so Lukaku and Rashford will have another year to seal their spot.

Where was this thread when he scored the penalty in Paris?
People were praising him to high heavens. Talking about his nerves of steel. Yet it was clear even then that he was not really playing well.

Are you saying he is playing fantastic and all this is just everyone's imagination?

Well yes.
Not really. People are saying that he has been poor for a while and seems to have become far too cocky and selfish. Those freekicks are just one example of it. He shoots even when he has better options available. So either he doesn't have the smartness to play a more effective role as a team player or he wants to do it all by himself. I am not sure which it is.

Too much has been made of all this. Taking shots when he has better options? Many players do that and it literally happens all the time. That doesn't mean he's full of himself or that he's cocky. I think that has become a bith of a myth.

There are a number of problems with this team. Marcus Rashford is not one of them in fact he's one of the solutions. And feck off to the people using Danny Welbeck's name to insult him. Welbeck was a starter under Fergie and an excellent prospect till injuries and David Moyes scuttled his career.

Rashford is the only player that will run all day, chase back furiously if he lost the ball, his passion and commitment for the jersey his is wearing is second to none...(looking at you, Mr Pogba and Martial)

This isn't about his form though is it? This is about another young, black English lad having his character questioned because apparently he needs his 'bubble bursting' whatever the feck that means.

Me neither. We all know the treatment McTomminay has gotten on here over the last 12 months, and now we're at the point where someone said he could be the next Roy Keane yesterday, I shit you not, what a turnaround.

People need to show some patience, they've got no idea what's going on or how difficult it is for someone that young.

Lukaku and Ibra before him were roundly 'bashed' as well. Posting crap about our own players in the thing to do now. Oh for the days of watching Graeme Hogg playing for United, man that was something to complain about. No internet back then, so people just moved on until his next performance, where as now they spit bile on a daily basis and seem unable to move on...

I don't want him to lose the natural air of confidence the lad has but are we harming his long term prospects by making him think he's already an elite forward? I feel like his general game is so erratic and unpolished.

Said it before, he is a player capable of producing great moments but his overall 90 minute game leaves a lot to be desired on a regular basis. I genuinely do not think this lad can be a first team regular if we are looking to win big trophies unless he takes a big slice of humble pie and works really hard on all aspects of his game and simplifies it... i.e. becomes a work horse who understands his own limitations.

I think as a long term squad player he'd be a great asset to have around but I fear we have blown up his ego to such an extent - he would walk if he was told he's not good enough to make it here as a first team regular.
I said a while ago if we could get a 25 goal a season striker and rm or Barça offered 100+ million I would take it. He's nowhere near what we need up front. He's more an impact sub. Same as martial and lukaku way too inconsistent. The fact he is asking and seems to be getting rooneyesque wages is an absolute joke. He's 21 and nowhere near as good.

Let’s not rewrite history. Ronaldo had some shockers when he was 21. And his decision making was far from mature. Shock horror.

He’s been doing badly since his injury against Liverpool, him scoring the UCL makes him look better than he currently is right now. He needs to be rested for a while

Shame on many of you slagging our best young player.

He's one of only a few of our squad who would get into the first eleven of our rivals.

If he was Spanish and was linked with United you'd all be knocking one out about signing him.

its worse with our kids. Inconsistency of form and decision making is regularly cited as 'proof' of being not good enough, inability to ever make it into top tier performers long term and not having talent. Its maddening.

This is bullshit. On current form there is not an elite side he would get anywhere near.

Pointing out extremely poor performances is not the same as slagging him off.

As for 'our best young player' is he that far ahead of martial? Many here would doubt that. He appears more committed than martial but for me martial has thus far shown he is a superior player. Though they both have strengths and weaknesses.

I would run all day (well maybe not i am 60) chase back furiously and give passion and commitment but it does not mean i am good enough to be a first choice in one of the top teams in Europe (allegedly ). Neither at this moment is Marcus Rashford . If we are to be a top team in Europe again then there is no place in the squad for Smalling , Jones, Young , Lingard , Roja, Damien and Sanchez and no place in the first 11 for Rashford (as of 2019) Lukaka , Shaw or Marital

A lot of work to be done , but it wont be because the Glaziers are happy with 4th place and out of the group in champions league

Have any of the bolded players ever scored 20+ goals in the PL alone?

Anyone but Rashford
The hyperbole surrounding Rashford depending on what form he’s in is actually hilarious.

He’s not as bad as people are saying now. He’s not the Mbappe like talent people were claiming during his post Jose form. He’s a pretty difficult player to manage because he’s not reliable enough to regularly lead the line but too talented to be wasted on the bench. He will probably end up back on the wing soon.

Just try this...

Martial----------Lukaku----------Rashford----

He's clearly our best crosser from the right, so he should be whipping them in instead of Young obviously. His cross for Pogba's header against Chelsea was excellent! not to mention his cross for Dalot against Barca, should have been 1-1. Just try him on the right, him and Lukaku can alternate in-game!

This.

I think people need to remember everyone was lauding Ole a few weeks ago for starting Rashford as our main striker. He's easily been one of our best players since getting rid of Jose. But the expectations of him being almost Mbappe-esq are ridiculous. He's just not on that level, he's going to be frustrating and inconsistent especially with the team in it's current state. But he's only 21, he's Manc born and bred and the potential is there to be a world beater one day.. Especially with the right players around him.

This is bullshit. On current form there is not an elite side he would get anywhere near.

There are much more experienced players who deserve more stick than Rashford for recent performances, Pogba and Lukaku need to be doing more. Martial is perhaps the more talented player but his best performances this season all came under Jose. He's not really had a great performance under Ole tbh (he has been injured a lot). Not to mention he's two years older..

Fans are so predictable, this weekend he will score and will be back again the prodigy he once was! Just keep faith in him and he will deliver. He scored 10 EPL goals and did not play in all games and under Jose most of the game were on the lw! If he played as a striker like he is doing now, I reckon he will be around 15-17 goals this time next season

So he’s linked to Real & Barca, but he’d not get near an elite side? I’m sure if he were in Mata position he’d have many many suitors and some of those would be ‘elite’ clubs.

PL Top 6 would surely be interested if there was news about him wanting to leave! when he's on it, he can be unplayable, he single handedly smashed Liverpool and TAA last season! he's scored against all the big 6 in PL, something Lukaku cant claim! He's won us so many games since his debut people have such short memories!

He has probably linked himself with these teams as its time for contract renewal.

Do you believe everything you read in the papers?

Often these stories start circulating when a player is angling for a new contract, it's not just coincidence.

Also the tabloids just concoct muppetry to sell papers

Well whether you agree with it or not, it’s true.
Shock horror is such a hyperbole. He was inconsistent but a horror? ridiculous statement. Most teams would pay crazy amount of money to have 21 y.o Ronaldo in their squad.

If a 21 years old Ronaldo was a shock horror then no wonder why people are bashing Rashford right now.
