Older, not as good version of Maddison
This. Exactly this.

Grealish is still a cracking player though but I'd rather have Maddison - kid has a hell of a FK on him too. Think Grealish will be well worth a punt if Villa don't go up given his age, profile, skillset, cheapness (you'd hope) and his Englishness makes him useful from a homegrown quota perspective.

The Maddison and Grealish comparisons are fair. I think Grealish has more natural ability and is a better dribbler, a player that can do amazing things. Maddison has many similar attributes but really works on his game and set pieces in particular, which gives him extra value.

Weird how Maddison and Grealish both have absolute terrible barnets and facial hair and seem like all round douchebags.

I think he's a lot better than people realise, he's potentially the best player in the Championship and still only 23. If Aston Villa don't get promoted he could get a move to a top 6 side, alongside better players I think he'd really step up and easily get in the England team. Has a higher ceiling than Maddison for me, but he's also a big talent.

That goal against Rotherham was sex. No matter what country or division, that was top notch.

He got 24 real quick.
He'd only just turned 19 when he broke through in 14/15. Started an FA cup final at that age.

Then we had the world collapsing in 15/16 with him given too much responsability for a player still learning and 16/17 was a wasted season with him lacking maturity off the pitch still.

At 22 the penny has dropped and he's been very good for the last year.

He is a good player but people wanting him to sign for Man Utd highlights how the levels have dropped at this club

The Championship is shite and 23 is pretty old not to be an established PL player. He could go on to reach his potential but compared to his contemporaries he has a lot of catching up to do.

Maddison is currently playing in central midfield in the same position Pogba plays. He's started 7 league games there and 15 as AM

Grealish has started 9 league games in central midfield and 15 as AM.

Here is Maddison's average position in his last game. Vs Huddersfield :

Here is Grealish's average position in his last game. Vs Rotherham :

Both are the number 10s in the images playing in away matches, in almost the exact same position slightly forward and left of the center circle and the 2nd furthest player forward in their teams system.

So yes you can and should compare them.
Not really when you see the position of the strikers in the two graphics posted.
Obvious that Maddison is supporting the striker whereas Grealish is pretty much level with his other midfielders.
Less a number 10, more of a midfielder.

Not great. Do not want.
I guess the question is do you buy players who have the potential to be very, very good for reasonable money or do you pay top dollar for players who are already at the top of their game. It all depends on how good the scouts are & can they spot true potential and can the coaching staff develop them.

Grealish has just 1 striker ahead of him, Maddison has 2 players ahead of him

He would be a solid option for a mid table team if Villa do not get promoted. Leicester, Everton, Watford would all be good options I feel if he moved. Spurs were apparently in for him if they could get him on the cheap when Villa had financial problems. But refused to pay more than 30mil for him.

Maddison is closest to his striker.
Grealish is closest to his midfield partner.
It's all relative.

You mean nonsense. I get it you love Grealish and want to make out he's a deep cm instead of an attacking one, to make up for the fact he doesnt have much end product.

Or you realise I'm correct and have to resort to petty arguements?
Grealish will be in the prem next season, will see how he deals with it then.

You arent.
In your opinion,
Grealish has license to roam, and will be often found picking up the ball from deep, something Maddison very rarely does.
Given the opportunity Grealish will bomb forward, usually through a late run in the box.
Whereas Maddison will often be on the edge of the box or in it already.
Both great players in my opinion, but entirely different in their play.

Their average position is almost exactly the same, so overall they play in the same position on the pitch. From watching United and looking at average positions after the match they are both around where Pogba ends up for United.

I think we are going around in circles here.
Average positioning is all relative.
Grealish is closer to his midfield partner than striker, Maddison is closer to his striker than midfield. Meaning Grealish is supporting his midfield more than striker, vice versa for Maddison.
Also positioning depends on the game itself, I'd wager Pogbas average positioning v Barca was deep, whereas against for example Palace it was probably quite attacking.
All relative.
But nothing you've stated has supported your opinion, merely been used against it.
But I respect your opinion of course .

I obviously disagree completely.

Both are the central player closest to the strikers, the only difference is Abrahams is pulling to the left. If he was central it would be the same. That can clearly be seen from their average positions that they are both the same distance up the pitch and the central midfielder supporting the striker/strikers.

So you're saying that IF Abraham's position was DIFFERENT it would back up your point???!
The simple fact of the matter is Maddison is closer to his striker, Grealish is closer to his midfield partner, completely negating your point.

No, I'm saying that Abrahams was pulling to the flank and it has nothing to do with the fact Grealish is the main player supporting him. And thats clear from average position.

Just a very clear average position showing him very clearly being the clear supporting player to Villa's one clear striker, clearly.

You're out? Hope you're headed to Specsavers

The Championship is not shite, especially for a 2nd tier division. Look at the likes of Gray, Maddison, Barnes, Wilson, Deeney, Hughes, Redmond, Maguire, Lascelles, Alli and Vardy. All made the step up to be good (and some great) EPL players after impressing in the Championship (or lower). It's obviously not the standard of the Prem but you really can't write someone off at 23 because they're in a lower division. There's a reason Spurs were looking at him last summer..

Most of those are little more than alright PL players. I don’t think anyone is seriously considering Barnes, Deeney or Hughes to be England standard players, which is what Grealish is being touted as.

The two most comparable to Grealish are Maddison and Alli, who we’re regulars in the PL at 18 and 21 respectively. Grealish will be 24 at the start of next season.

Is it so bad he wants to get promoted with his hometown team, plenty of people call for more loyalty from players nowadays. I do agree he has to be playing in prem next season, still a good chance it will be with us.

Ironic thing is if he declared for ROI he'd have 40 + caps by now.

It’s admirable and fair play to him for it but it’s bad for his career.

The lad has a lot of talent but has proved nothing yet. Being quality in the Championship doesn’t count for much to me. The likes of Vydra, Gray, Taarabt and Bamford have all been Championship player of the year in the not too distant past and been mediocre at best in the PL. I’m not putting Sessegnon on that list simply because he’s so young and could still end up being a top quality player his early 20s.

Add Sessegnon to that list last year, I think he's talented but made little to no impact in the Prem.

Cairney is quite comparable to Grealish I think. He ran the show for Fulham at Championship level, was easily one of the best players in the league and got 6 goals 5 assists from CM.

At PL level he's totally out of his depth. Sometimes players who have a bit of technique/flair about them can thrive at championship level and standout, but then at PL level every team has 2-3 players with the same technique but who are superior in terms of the mental side of their game and their work ethic.

yet if he played for a mid table german team we'd be screaming for him.
Like who?

But yes, chances are a player playing well midtable in one of the top leagues is more likely to have fans excited than a player doing the same in the championship. Because its obviously a far stronger league

It's such a weird thing to say.

'oh you'd be getting way more excited if a player was performing in a top division!'

Yeah I mean, obviously??? I mean nobody here wants to sign Teemu Pukki do they? He's smashed in 27 goals and got 9 assists at championship level. It's a lower division for a reason, the players Grealish are up against are of a far lower level and thus it's much easier to shine, it's not rocket science.

Sure that doesn't necessarily equate to him not being able to do it at a higher level, but it's certainly a big possibility and has been that way with lots of players who shine at lower league level in the past.

Will be interesting to see him and Tuanzebe tomorrow. I always thought Grealish looks extremely gifted and probably one of the most natural talented english players there is at the moment.

He's been fantastic every time I've watched him this season. Really hope Villa go up for his sake, because it will allow him to progress more at the highest level for a team where he's the main man.

Based on what? Maddison has been one of the best in his position in the premier league.

Grealish has... ?

Maddison was better last year for Norwich than Grealish is this year for Villa, let alone this season doing it in the premier league
Did you see much from both of them or are your opinion based on stats? I struggle to see why you belive Maddison are better than Grealish based on those stats. Goals and assist? Worth mentioning that Maddison only had 2 assists and 8 goals from open play. A goal every 455 min from open play. Grealish currently stands at a goal. Better than Grealish, but still, so «poor» that it is hardly relevant. Same is the case for a stat like «key passes». Grealish is better if you look at open play. On the other hand, Villa is a better team than Norwich and the age favour Maddison.

Based on the eye, I would still probably favour Grealish. He just look a bit more talented in my opinion. More pace and power somehow. But I’m a big fan of Maddison too.

One player we really should be targeting.

Classy and he seems to have a pair unlike most of ours.
