No, it doesn't. I'm commenting on his strengths and weaknesses. Do you agree with me that - apart from that save - today once again showed some huge deficiencies in his game?
One error forcing a throw out doesnt demonstrate Huge deficiencies. That is a huge over exaggeration.
He is safe rather than exceptional in his distribution.

Come on isn't a player entitled to some poor performances especially when you compare how many times he's saved us? Not saying that he should be untouchable but some perspective is needed that's all. If he's sold tmw, he would break the record for the most expensive keeper in the world. Yes distribution might be not as good at times this season but let's not get into the normal forum 'speak' like he's turned in David James over night.
I'm not having a go at him. You're totally misunderstanding here. I want him to improve and I have no problem cutting him some slack, but it doesn't look like there's any attempt to improve - that's my issue with him. I don't want us to be so grateful to him that we lose sight of the fact that he needs improvement.
Every champion pushes themselves. Federer is almost 38 years old and will improve here and there as much as his old body will allow. Closer to home, Ronnie has the same mentality. As long as the athlete hasn't retired, he or she should always look to improve. Dave has bags of talent so he's more than capable.

There's not a team in the world he doesn't walk straight into their starting 11 even with his 'huge deficiencies'....let's stop this nonsense and cut the lad some slack....

Come on. Don't avoid the issue and leave Pogba out of this. Pogba for all his faults has been far better than Dave this season,
For what it's worth Ole needs to add another coach to his team imho.

None of it takes away from the fact that this is the worse we've seen Dave and it coincides with his mate who happens to his coach. That is not a professional environment.

Anyway, don't complain next time Dave blunders along. Keep treating him with kid gloves and see how far that gets us.
Pogba has made many more mistakes this season than DDG, however a goal keepers will always be highlighted more.
He probably wont win our player of the season for the 6th year in a row but he is still one of our top performers. We have 10 positions on the pitch with more problems.
Some of the criticism has been very petty occasionally like mid week deserved

The save yesterday was on the worlds best, it won us the game.....and still fans complain.

I disagree. Anyways, it doesn't change the fact that he needs to improve several facets of his game, does it?

DG's distribution previously has been good, 'at times' this season it hasn't. How do you like he became the best keeper in the world from the young lad with the shocking start here? Hard work, strong mentality along with his natural talent maybe? You are blowing the whole thing out of proportion.....

He also almost cost us the game. And he has done so several times this season. I'm not saying, we should get rid, but that he needs to improve. I really don't see why that's controversial.

I respectfully disagree with you. Strong mentality? Where is it? He looks so damn afraid and tentative this season.

Exactly.

I don't know why people are getting offended by this. I hope I don't hear a peep out of those posters babying him if/when he cost us quite badly in upcoming games.

Like? His kicking is generally good but like most players, there will be times when elements of your game drops off. Normally it's a confidence thing. I'm sure he works hard on all aspects of his game but who doesn't? To call them deficiencies suggests something else as he wouldn't be considered the best keeper in the world with them. People will realise how good a keeper he is, when he's not here anymore.

What game(s) this season has his distribution amounted to us losing a game this season?

It was an amazing save but it came after he allowed West Ham to keep that attacking phase alive by staying rooted to his line when the ball flashed across the six yard box. He’s being annoying this season.
100% this. He should have claimed the ball with minimal fuss as it was going pretty slowly to his left just outside his goal box.

Absolutely amazing save, just didn’t need to put himself in a situation where a save of that caliber was needed.

Dunno about losing a game, but we have conceded against Brighton, Man City, twice against West Ham if the one against Wolves is not counted.

Personally, at this point I’d sell him whilst we can still get big money for him. I appreciate how important he’s been for us, but his performances have highlighted the lack of quality elsewhere on the pitch for years.

It’s better to have a very good keeper with top quality outfield players, than a world class keeper with average outfield players. I just think the money him and Pogba can bring in could be reinvested really well... saying that, we’re run by idiots

Some are unable to recognize his shortcomings because we prefer to blame everything on the defenders. We have actually seen him play many times when he isn't with us, and it's not always a great sight.

Obviously he saved the resulting shot, so he 'saved us' again. If he didn't save the shot, then the defenders would take all the blame.

He will think twice before trying a quick throw out to Pogba again for sure.

LOve him but I would cash in. His value is as high as it gets. Romero is good enough and the rest of the team needs huge investment

Replace one of the best goalkeepers in the world with someone now-where near as good, just so that the glaziers can pay themselves a higher dividend??

What do you think prospective signings would think of a club that sold their only consistent world class player for a few quid??

How did he get into the Spanish team when his distribution is worse than a Sunday league goalkeeper. In the past few games his distribution cost us 2 goals.

Cannot believe people are even entertaining the idea of getting rid of him. We must retain all of our best players unless they’re determined to leave.

Like his ability to come off his line, secure high balls and distribute the ball.

His distribution isn't a deficiency as you would describe it, and been one of his strengths. Secure high balls isn't something modern goalkeepers do as much and that's due to how defensively teams set up for set pieces now. Coming off his line maybe but that's more goalkeeping style than anything else. It works for some and not for others and we have seen huge mistakes with keepers that come for the ball or starting position is too high. I find it hard to suggest he needs to change something that has made him best in the world.

Alrighty. United's best player in years has a serious dip in form while most of his teammates can't even remotely get close to his level.

He'll be fine. This team have much bigger issues than David de Gea.
De Gea being horrible on crosses has nothing to do with a "dip in form". This has been the story of his career...

The story of his career is his rivalry with Neuer for best keeper in the world title who btw also makes critical mistakes.

I would love to judge De Gea when he'll have a functional defense for a change.

So you want no shots against and his defense to deal with balls in his 6 yard box...got it

It seems we fundamentally disagree on what to expect from a goalkeeper. If you're satisfied with a keeper who's great at shot stopping but nothing else, that's fair, but further debate about de Gea between the two of us is useless.

He has weaknesses, personally I think Oblak is a better keeper overall but DDG is great.
Having said that I don't think we need to downplay his weaknesses because he has them and he can improve

Love Dave but if there was a certain chance we could get Oblak in while he goes to Real I'd jump at the opportunity.

It just shows you exactly what we're missing in Spurs vs City game when Ederson came out and caught a monster ball getting hammered in the process but he didn't care.

I think the points gained from unsavable saves he makes would be offset against a goalie with better commanding/catching a distributing. Lloris is a fine example.

Best keeper in the world for me. Save yesterday was something else. Distribution hasn't been great this season. Said elsewhere, it can't be easy when there's so many changes in front of you and there's yet more uncertainty about the summer.
I'm a fan of DDG but he's not close to Stegen and Oblak at this moment in time.

Find me a better keeper on the market.
There are a bunch of better keepers than De Gea. De Gea is probably the most agile, and great at making the highlight reel save. However he lacks in so many other areas. Areas that I thought he would be able to learn. He might make some saves that no other keeper in the world can make, but he also allows goals that most keepers would save...

Yes. Goalkeeping isn't just restricted to wonder saves believe it or not. And the less wonder saves you'll be required to make in a top team. Most of other top goalkeepers in the world can replicate these saves whilst being stronger in the other departments.

 the saves he makes are ridiculous. He faces way more shots than any other 'top keeper' and has almost single handedly kept us from becoming an even bigger joke in the last few years

And he has also let in a lot of goals that no keeper at his level should ever let in. In fact, in the last 3 games he's let in goals that he shouldn't let in and looked like an absolutely wuss doing it. He turned his back on Smallings OG. WTF is that???

Of course not but De Gea is not only good at wonder saves. He has his weaknesses as all players, and in the moment is in shaky form as he has been this season, but lets not pretend De Gea has not been the best in the world on merit. He has been incredibly consistent on his top level, and has proven himself to be a clever, strong and well-rounded keeper. Also making a lot less mistakes than other top keepers, as well as pulling out wonder saves a ridiculous amount. I loved that he always was so focused even if he didn't see much involvement all game you could count on him making a match-winning save out of the blue where other keepers usually are prone to fall asleep sometimes. He has been weaker in this area this season too, imo.

Thanks for your indepth reply. I feel all the smarter for it...sigh
Sorry about that, a bit immature. I just found it funny the word 'bunch' for some reason.

And what use are his saves if mistakes started entering back into his game? We are consistently vulnerable to balls over the top because of his refusal to sweep up and we are liable to any crosses into our box due to his lack of assertiveness and decisiveness. The GK and defense is one whole unit and therefore it's not fair to separate him from the blame of our defensive issues. The fans are quick to blame the defence for every goal but a good amount could've been prevented with more proactive keeping.
