Barca's wage bill is double ours at 560m Euros (KPMG).

United's is under 250m.

Sure, they are getting better 'value'. But the point is, you cannot expect to compete against that mammoth difference long term.

United will NEVER consistently compete under the current ownership structure of the Glazers and the NYSE.

A for-profit business model cannot compete against City, PSG, Barca and Real who can reinvest every penny they make (and more).

Most of Barca's wage bill will be in Messi's pocket, we don't pay small wages, but we pay them to bad players. We reward players for absolutely nothing, just turning up basically.

Are you suggesting Messi earns 300m a year?

According to that KPMG study, Barcelona's wage bill exceeds any other club's by at least €200m. I'm skeptical, to say the least.

I don't think wage plays a big deal on this game. Had DDG and Pogba ( & Rashford) got what they asked for, we would have added 30m to our bill, on top of any new addition. In fact, Shaw would not have gifted the 1st goal, Romeo would not have gifted the 2nd, it was mental mostly. We might still have lost but it should have been a fair game not rubbish time after 30th min.

By that logic, we need to be beating every other team except Barca and Real. They are the only ones who have a higher wage bill than us. Even City and PSG have lower wages. We are just a poorly run club. Nothing to do with wages.

Ajax’s wage bill was €53 million towards the end of 2018.

What's our wage bill compared to Ajax?
Or Liverpool? Barca pay shitloads in wages and it's tough to compete with them, fine. But we must have the lowest value for money squad in Europe (maybe second after PSG :D). It isn't good enough, whichever way you cut it.

Would take their figures with a pinch of salt. They're both backed by states. I'm sure a lot of their players are getting paid off the books back in the Emirates and Qatar

How many of those players are going to stick around at Ajax on those wages?
De Jong is gone and probably De Ligt. Maybe a few others.

But my point is rather how poor and directionless our transfer business has been lately. There's no clear strategy or plan in buying players.

And yet we manage to look like a 30 million team. Seriously I dont know who make the contracts, how do we manage to spend 250 million on wages on such a poor squad?

How mant years have we had without a proper RB and RW? Is it 3 or 4 now?

Obviously we are proof that money does not reflect quality on the pitch. We have one of most expensive teams in history and the 2nd highest wage bill in world. We have feck all to show it. Once in a while when Pogba looks like a world class player, we can strut and show off we have quality player. Apart from that nothing really. Only DDG when he is on form and he's not really been up there this year. It's so depressing. Lukkau 75m?

Care to dispute? I got them from the KPMG report on the finances of the top clubs.
United havent been under 250m euros for a while. A football finance think tank, Sporting Intelligence has United at around 350m euros. Pretty much every source I've seen has United well above 250m euros.

Where are you getting these figures?

Real and Barca have wage bills that are double, or close to, ours. City are third.

We may be fourth but I'd suspect that's Juve now.

In 2017/18 Barca’s wage bill was €521m excluding their other sports clubs.

Real Madrid’s was €395m excluding their basketball team.

United’s wage bill was £296m (€342M)

Higher than ours but not quite double. Ajax’s in comparison was €53m so United have almost 7 times their wage bill.

And Spurs’ wage bill? Liverpool’s?

Our bill wouldn’t look too much different to Real Madrid if you disregard the 15-20% devaluation of the pound after June 16.

I guess you're right. We are still not getting what we're paying for.

Your argument is effectively a moot point considering that teams with wage bills smaller than ours are consistently outperforming us and often matching or beating the likes of Barca and Real.

Yes money matters but fact is we spaff cash on sub par players contracts regularly and have a recruitment policy that has had zero cohesion since Fergie left.

Or not even turning up in some cases.

Think Coutinho is earning just around 100k. He'd be earning two and half times that in England.

Of all the things to be comparing today. A lack of wage bill when ours is so high compared the quality we have is plain stupid.

They are 1st and on the way to win treble, United is 5th.
But OP is right, math checked out and that's exactly why United's been struggle. Phone it to Woodward, you apparently has solved our problem.
