If you just watched the second half and new nothing about football, you would more than likely say that Mctominnah and Fred looked miles better than Pogba. Thats good for Mctominah but worrying for Pogba.
I guess Barca payed much more attention to Pogba than to the other two midfielders. Would have been stupid not to.

Super strong for a young man, an immovable force in clashes with Barca players. He's got the potential to become tha hard centre of our team.

On two-three occasions in the Barcelona-game I wanted him to change his direction of movement into the box to try to break free.

Thats is the probably the part where he can improve the most; his movement when he is not on the ball. If he manage to, he will become a huge force in the box. I think he will. He seem like a reallt bright player. Both on and off the pitch. He just need more game time and experience in this position.

Says a lot.

Some people called him Championship material a few weeks ago yet here he is being rested so he's fit to face Barcelona.
It's a sad reflection on the shambolic state of our squad. Not that I think McTominay is a bad player, he looks like he could be a decent player. But important enough to rest so he's fit to face Barcelona? Don't think so

It's both I think. With Herrera seemingly gone and Matic injured, we're looking very thin in midfield. But McTominays last couple of performances wouldn't have looked out of place in a Ferguson team.

MOTM. Hard to show fight when your senior players are letting you down time and time again. Even more so when there's no chance of getting a result after 15 mins but fair play to this kid. Tidy on the ball and looked like he actually gave a shit which can't be said for most.

Suddenly looks like one of our best players. Fantastic determination from him! Only player that doesn’t fall to pieces in big games?

Young player who plays without fear, too wet around the ears to fear anything

Decent. Fred was better but the three of them in midfield played fairly well.

He's the only one who is still pure and playing with the determination and hunger of a kid fighting for his place in the team. That'll end once we give him a fat new contract

Would love him to succeed here as an academy player but still don't think he's anywhere near the required level if we want to get back to competing for the Champions League again. Trying hard isn't enough if you want to be at that level.

Strange thing to say when he's shown himself to be a tidy player in the Champions League multiple times.

His development has been a real surprise. He has decent feet for a big guy. His passing is generally quick and progressive. Gets stuck in. He's not afraid. Very interesting to see what happens with him say next season.

Needs to play. Heart of this club right now and you know them best in difficult moments like this one.

Did ok. Passed the ball reasonably well. Was sprinting back towards the end. Shame he couldn't control Rashford's pass early on.

His effort and attitude was one of the better ones, but he needs to continue his development and technical quality on the ball...especially if he's going to play as an 8. His passing intent is fine, but the quality of his passing the actual execution of it, especially anything over 15 yards needs more touch/finesse.

His first touch in the first half into the box was horrendous and worse than Lukaku. We can't ignore that. He had a much better first leg.

Needs to stay in the first team rotation to improve but he can be upgraded pretty easily. If he's the extra midfielder near the box, with Fred or someone as the deepest midfielder, McTominay's final third play has to increase 2 or 3 levels for United to consider him to be a first XI player.

He's young and he's still in a small sample set.

He's a squad player at the end of the day. I still think Garner is what some of our fans want McTominay to be just like I think Greenwood is going to surpass Rashford.

He's doing what is required and that's great for the kid.

So you think he'd be anywhere near Barca's team? That's the level we need to aim for.
Barcelona have a pipeline of players and a culture at the club for a specific way of playing. McTominay doesn't fit that and so would not get into that Barca team. His height and build basically exclude him from playing for them, he's not the right type of midfielder.

I think a much better question would be whether McTominay is able to influence the game at this level and the answer is a resounding yes. That doesn't mean he's a guaranteed starter for us, but he has good qualities about him that show themselves at the highest level.

Like 98% of professional footballers he isn't on the same level technically as Barca players and will never be but he has shown lately that he is capable of putting in a shift and being a nuisance. I like him.

Problem is that's becoming our new identity, just a bunch of high effort players being a nuisance. And no real quality.

Mentality and workrate were fine, nothing special in his performance but the effort was there, not sure how he's winning the MOTM poll.

So in other words, United can never become good again?

Liverpool have Henderson and Milner starting for them. Nothing wrong with workhorse midfielders if they are used correctly (see Kante). He does a lot of the dirty work really well.

It's easier to upgrade a midfield than both fullbacks, a center back and all 3 attackers though.

And can we stop short of thinking Ole is comparable with Klopp?

Would any of Liverpool's midfield be anywhere near Barca's team? Yet you can't say Liverpool are underdogs when they meet Barca in the semis. Different team set ups and player profiles.
